Jewish audio on Kaban.org ORG. Good morning and welcome today's hummus portion, making our way through the portion of Achrimos Chapter 17, verse 8 in the book we use here 169. Yesterday we learned about the prohibition of offering sacrifices outside the tabernacle, the Mishkan, or Holy Temple, Bezhamidush GPE, area. You can't just offer a sacrifice anywhere you'd like. And now he continues, verse 8, by Alehem Tomar PERSON, and tell them as well the following law, alayhem Tomar, and tell them as well the following law, isesh ishariah, that any man from the house of Israel GPE, which means a Jew NORP who's born a Jew, or from the converts who will dwell amongst you, who will offer a burnt offering or a sacrifice. And, first, Rashiya la Eila PERSON, didn't we just cover this?So now Rashi PERSON says that this prohibition applies to the following scenario, Le Chayev PERSON. This is to cause one to be culpable, guilty. Al-hamaktir PERSON, a voreim-bakhuts. It's possible that the offering was brought in the Holy Temple. The offering was brought in the tabernacle. But then he goes and smokes the various partsthat have to be smoked on the altar. He does a barbecue in his backyard. He goes to the park. If one smokes the limbs of the animal outside the area, it's as if he slaughtered it outside the designated area. Shemshachat Echad PERSON.Or if one person offers, slaughters, and another smokes it on an altar, they're both culpable, meaning that the smoking of the limbs are a process in and of itself to cause culpability. Verse nine, here he defineswhat we're talking about, because verse 8 was a half statement. Vial Pesach, oh, el moed GPE, lo, yewana, he will not bring it to the gateway of the tabernacle, Lhasei to make it as an offering to Hashem PERSON. And Nihra PERSON, so he is shah. Who may am of, that man's soul will be cut off from his people. That's the punishment of Kores PERSON.What is Kores,, Rashi PERSON defines. And Nihras, Zare Nichrosim. During the time that the Bess Hamidur PERSON stood, these heavenly punishments were in effect. His children, his seed, would be cut off. The Yom of Nichrosim PERSON, and his days would be cut short. He would die, depending upon whether it's Kores or Misa Bidae Shamaim PERSON, at age 50 or at age 60, without children. If he had children, they would perish. This is the process of the terrible punishment of Kores PERSON, which now, since there is no longer Abbas Hamidosh PERSON, this punishment is not in effect. In fact, the outer Eber, Rabbinerzharzharman of Liyadh GPE, points out in his 12-chapter work on Chuvra PERSON, on repentance, that this is an advantage that we have nowadays. Who can ever imagine having an advantage nowadays? Nowadays, everything isunfortunately not the way it was. He says the advantage was that you could still do Chuba EVENT, even for such punishments that back then you wouldn't be here to do Chuba EVENT. So that's a benefit of being here during these times. Verse 10. Now we come, we segue over to another Mitzvah. I want to introduce this Mitzvah because there are so many commandmentspertaining to this mitzvah. And that is, there is a theme in Jewish NORP life. And that theme is simply Ki Haddam Hu Hanepesh.Blood is life. Blood is life. And because blood is life, it's sacred. And that's why we don't's sacred. And that's why we don't eat blood, and that's why we remove the blood from the animal. We soak it, we salt it, we rinse it. That's the whole complex halakhic NORP process called melichah, the salting and soaking and rinsing of meat. And furthermore, when weslaughter a bird, or we don't do that very often, but a kosher wild animal, we have Kisui Hadam NORP, we cover the blood, but surely people havebeen in the presence of a Shokha NORP who slaughtered a chicken or a bird, and we know there's a mitzvah of Kisui, Haddam. Good morning. We cover the blood with ashes, with earth, with sawdust, with something. We usually do this at Kaparot FAC. When the average layman sees a chicken being slaughtered, unless you do Kapparot FAC with frozen chicken.I'm just kidding. Okay. So this is the sanctity of blood. Verse 10. Me ish, ish, me base Israel GPE, every man from the house of Israel. And of the strangers who dwell amongst you, meaning converts, Asi Yich al-Koldom PERSON, who will ingest any blood. And Asati, Ponai PERSON, so he says in this expression, Hashem PERSON says, I will set my countenance, or as Rashi PERSON says, I will clear my desk and deal only with this. You know, Hashem PERSON has a big desk in this guy. A big computer screen. Banafesh against the soul, who eichelis as a dumb who consumes the blood. And I will cut that soul off, Meked PERSON of Amma from amongst its people. Cold dumb, Rashi PERSON. What does it mean? All blood. Lefich enamehachachach, being that it says, Rashi PERSON, what does it mean all blood? The fich in Hehanna GPE by nephish a kapir, being that it says, by life you make atonement. We know that the blood is sprinkled on the altar. I would think that this prohibition only applies to the blood of sacrifices being misused. Tomolome, any blood you can't even eat meat. Blood of meat you're going to eat. We have to remove all of the blood. We know that in certain cultures they necessarily ingest blood because of the energy, which is derived from blood. We know, for example, even in a kosher culture, if someone is low energy, the doctor says your anemic, eat liver, because liver is high in blood, even if it's koshered and the blood is removed. It's not so easy to kosher liver. But still, there is a way of koshering liver. I mean, what's a Jew NORP without some chopped liver? So liver is kosher. Liver has high blood content, so to speak, even after it'skoshered. Blood is a very healthy thing. We're not allowed to eat blood because it represents life. When I sati upon my leisure time, so to speak. Pena'animikoa sookai, the Sifra PERSON, interprets this as Hashem PERSON allegorically saying, I'll turn away from everything else I have to do. Vaisigbe PERSON, and I'll deal with this guy who eats blood. Jews NORP do not eat blood. Why not? What's so terrible? Blood could be healthy. It is. So he says, Kinepesh, 11, Habosar PERSON, badomhi.Because the life of any flesh is in the blood. Blood is life. The blood circulates,it brings life. And I, therefore, Hashem PERSON says, Nossati Vlachem PERSON, have designatedblood for you. To be used for atonement al-Mizbech, upon the altar, the sprinkling of the blood upon the altar. Lachapet on aphshisheachem, to make atonement for your souls. That's the symbolismof blood atonement. Because it is blood, by nefesh yehapet, that makes atonement because it's life. That's the potency. That's the power of blood. You can't just go eat it. Rashi PERSON, Kinephesh, ha bosser, of every creature, Badom he tluya, depends upon its blood.Well, the figach, and therefore, nassativ, I have given it upon the altar, to make atonement on nefesh or adam for the soul of man. Tov a nefish, let one soul come with sechapar on upish, and make atonement for another soul. That's the idea of the sprinkling of the blood. And therefore, he says it very clearly in 12. Al-Kane PERSON, it is for that reason a marty that I've said.Livna Yisra to the children of Israel GPE, call nefesh mikam, every one of you, every soul amongst you, lo, sochal, dom, should not eat blood. The hager, hagar besiechachachachem, and the convert who dwells amongst you, lo, yohaldom, should not eat blood. Konephesh mchen, interesting Rashi PERSON, we find this theme in the Torah WORK_OF_ART, La Hazir, Gdaelim find this theme in the Torah,La Hazir Gideleim al-Actanim PERSON, that the adults have to make sure the children don't eat blood. In general, adults have to train children. We have that famous teaching in the portion of Emor. Emor of Amarto, Lahazir Agdolim al-Actanim PERSON, that children have to be trained by adults, not to eat blood. Blood is holy.Rachman al-Lat-Slan PERSON, may Hashem prevent it. But when, God PERSON forbid, we've seen on news reports when there were terror attacks, God forbid. And you see the groups of people in Israel GPE coming in in scraping all the flesh and the blood. They get every bit of flesh and blood that they can to bury it. Because if possible, the blood of death has to be buried along with the body. That's the sanctity of blood. Thirteen, the Ish Ish, Isirteen, and each ish-ish Mebne Israel PERSON, and every man of the children of Israel GPE, as the old joke goes, I wonder what the adults were doing when Moses PERSON spent 40 yearstalking to the children of Israel GPE. Or min hager, hagar, besiecham, of the strangers, converts who dwell amongst you, Asher Yotsud PERSON, hagar, begor, besiecham, of the strangers, converts who dwell amongst you, Asher Yotud PERSON, Cid, Chaya, who will go hunt the hunting of an animal, what animal could be hunted and trapped and eaten kosher, a deer, venison.Aif or foul, asher ye'e ocha, which may be eaten by Torah WORK_OF_ART law because it's kosher. But if and when its blood is spilled in the shchita process, be chisohu, be offer, you must cover it with earth, with dust. These days, the preferred thing that I've seen is sawdust. They have like buckets of sawdust. But anything works.Rashi, Asher, Yotsud PERSON, Aalat Zaya PERSON, does this only apply when it's hunted? Avazimitana PERSON, What about geese and chickens? You don't have to hunt. Does this law also apply? Tambolay mitzaitmi Kham any type of provision.Asher ye'e ochel PERSON, prachlitmeim, this excludes non-kosher birds. If a non-kosher bird for some reason, the blood is spilled, it doesn't have to be covered. We're talking about the shhita of a kosher bird. Or a kosher wild animal. 14,why do you have to cover the blood? Because blood is sacred and blood is godly and blood is life. And this shows a respect for life. Kineppesh Kolbosar, because the soul of every flesh,Domei benafshahu. The blood is the soul. When we talk about the soul dwelling in the body, soul is obviously spiritual. Body is physical. In what part of the body does the soul dwell? The blood. It circulates through the entire body. That's the life force. Vohemar, therefore, God says, I have said, Levinay Israel GPE, to the children of Israel, to the Jewish people, Dam, Kobosur, Lotho Heel GPE. Do not eat the blood of all flesh, period. Why? He repeats again, Kinefesh Kolbosur PERSON, because the soul of every living thing, doma, he, the soul is the blood. Call Eichlove PERSON, therefore, anybody who just eats it, ye corres, his soul shall be cut off, because he's violating the concept of soul, the idea of soul. Rashi, dome, benafshah, its blood is for it They became an nephish in the place of the soul The nephish cluebaid The blood holds the soul The soul dwells within the bloodBecause nephish Comeyhu The nephish yadom The life is the blood Dam O bosser loch in zocharThe words dam and boss are male gender, nephish loshenikava. The word nephish is female gender. There's a very powerful Yiddish LANGUAGE expression for those who have a background in Yiddish. When you want to tell somebody, you're upsetting me to death, the expression is, do tsaps me de blut. You're sucking my to death. The expression is, do tap smir de blut. You're sucking my blood out.Stop. Stop, milich de blut. That expresses this idea of the blood is the soul and so on. Very difficult to translate Yiddish LANGUAGE in a meaningful way. 15. Vechal, nephesh asher teichal neveilo PERSON, treifa, the next mitzvah that he goes into is that any person, any soul who will consume a neveila or treifa in simple terms a neveila is a living thing that dies on its own without the shochard killing it, roadkill.Treifa in simple terms is an animal which is diseased and cannot live on its own without the Shochat killing it, roadkill. Trefa, in simple terms, is an animal which is diseased and cannot live on its own for more than 12 months, but in different places it has different meanings. Be Ezra, whether the person is a born Jew NORP, what we call a homie, or a ger, a convert. Bihibes Begodav PERSON, that causes impurity. And as Rashi PERSON explains, he talks about swallowing it as it enters the esophagus. It makes the entire person impure. Bechibes begotab, and rachats vamai. He must wash his clothes. Good morning and bathe himself in the water of a mikve. And he's impure until evening. When the sun sets and it gets dark, and toher then, provided he's bit in a mikveh, he becomes pure. Fifteen, Asherteh on the velo-trefeb, benivlas aeuf Toher, Gibra Kosser PERSON. The Torah here talks about the carcass of a bird that is of a kosher NORP species, of a bird that is of a kosher NORP species, that the kosher species carcass bird only has impurity el abyssosh and of las by saba as it's going down and being swallowed. But it teaches you that the person takes on impurity, preventing that person from entering into the Beesamigdush or eating of holy foods during the time that the Bezamigdush ORG stood, by its eating. The Eina metama by maga, not by touching it. Or trefo ha murakhan, the word trefa, why is it mentioned here? Leich de Valle Liddres ORG, so that we can interpret it.Wech an chaninu y'all to eat, nibis eif thom and batae baysabliya. I would think that this applies to an impure bird, tam-a'am. M'u'em a trefa. Only the type that has treifa, yautso aif thomish ain't by min a trefa. An impure species doesn't even have the law of trepa. Treifa only applies to a kosher NORP species. So this is a law of purity and impurity. If not yechabes NORP or if the person says, I don't care. I'm not washing my garments. I'm not immersing in a mikveh, and I'm going to go into the base amygdosh anyway. Do me something. When no sauvaini, this person will bear his sin. This is a very serious transgression of intentionally violating the sanctity of the Holy Temple. Rashi and Nossah Abedin and Mejahokaitish PERSON, we only talk about if he eatsof the holy food, a Yikonis or he enters into the Holy Temple. Chayev, Altumazu PERSON, he's guilty, he's culpable for this state of impurity. Kichoh PERSON, Shartoum is like any other impurity. A person is allowed to be impure, and he has no problem as long as he doesn't go into a base of Mignish NORP or eat Kharbonas. For sa'i loyachas for bathing of the body, not immersing in a mikveh. There's the punishment of the cutting off of the soul. Valkibus be Goddum, if he refuses to wash his garments, whichis stated by certain forms of impurity. But Malco PERSON is there, the punishment is only lashes. Now we go into chapter 18, which is the beginning of the forbidden intimacy section. There's only a few verses in today's portion, and then it continues in the Friday portion. Chapter 18, verse 1 by Dhabit Hashem PERSON. El Moshe PERSON. Lehmahman, Shepok to Moshe, saying. And it's interesting that the beginning of the portion of Achre is what we read on Yom Kippur. And now this is the Mincha reading for Yom Kippur. Why would we read about forbidden intimacies on the holiest day of the year? Because intimacy is very holy and forbidden intimacy is very unholy. My dabel abenaheIsrael GPE speak to the children of Israel. You amart O'leem and tell them, I am, Hashem PERSON, ala Keichem. I am God, your God. It's me. And therefore, my mitzvus govern every facet of your lives.I am the one who said in Sinai LOC, I am God, your God. And you the Jewish NORP people. What did the Jewish people declare at Mount Sinai LOC? They said, na'est, we will do, and we will study. We're in the program. You accepted my kingship. If you accept my kingship, you say I'm in the program, now you need to know what it means to be in the program. May I talk to Zerese PERSON, I accept my dechip. You say I'm in the program. Now you need to know what it means to be in the program. May I accept my decrees. Let me tell you my decrees. My decrees extend to every facet of life, even intimacy. Rabbii, my rabbi says, why is this portion stated here? Go, leave you do al- lafone of it, was revealed before Hashem PERSON. Obviously, Hashem PERSON knows everything, but specifically he's alluding to a period of time in history at the end of the destruction of the first base Hamidush when the Jewish people ascended back up into Israel GPE to create the second commonwealth. There was a lot of stuff going on. This was under the leadership of Ezra PERSON. And Ezra proclaimed to the children of Israel GPE, send away your foreign wives. Everybody had a foreign wife. And the marriage situation, anintimate situation, was completely out of control because of the darkness of the exhum. So Hashem knew, she saithon, let not take, Bahraeus PERSON, that they would be struck, so to speak, with the sin of immoral relations. Be me Ezra PERSON in the times of Ezra. But Heikah, therefore, Bo Alayem Big Zayra PERSON, Hashem said years earlier,I am coming to you with this decree. I am God, your God. You should know me gayser al-le-ham PERSON. Who is decreeing this? It's not that some rabbi decided this is who you should be intimate withand this is who you shouldn't. But this comes from Hashem PERSON. Dayen li pariah, and Hashem PERSON is worthy of being the judge to punish, to reward. This is a godly mitzv. And that this applies to the entire section of the holiness of intimacy. The rabbiqibibib, points out something interesting, that not every time Rashi PERSON quotes a teaching, does he quote its author. Yet here we find he says, Rabbi Omer, Rebi PERSON. Rebi is Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi, the author of the Mishnahe WORK_OF_ART. And in general, what's going on here? Rashi PERSON is telling us that God is saying something to Mosesbecause of what will happen in the time of Ezra PERSON. It's a long way off. So the reverber points out, and I'll just share it briefly, that Rebbe, Rabbi Yudha Hanasi, the author, the redactor of the Mishnah WORK_OF_ART, he did something very unique. What he did is he recorded the oral law,the oral law until the times of Rebbe PERSON was oral. Rebbe PERSON wrote it. Rebbe recorded the oral law and the Mishnah WORK_OF_ART. It's not something that should have been done, perhaps. That's why it's called Tauruszibalpa. Now, Rebbe PERSON knew, and thank God he knew, that if he wouldn't do it, it would be forgotten. Because the Jewish NORP people were about to enter into the darkness of exile. And because Rebbe did what he did, he saved the Torah WORK_OF_ART for all of us. In fact, Rebbe said, this is what King David alluded to many years earlier when he wrote in the Tehilim, Chapter 119. when he wrote in the Tehilim, Chapter 119, Ease, Laasos, la Hashem, Heferu to Ros Echah. And when it comes time to do for Hashem PERSON,you could even violate some of the teachings of the Torah WORK_OF_ART. Not you or I can decide that, but a great saddic can decide that up to now we couldn't record the oral law because it was oral, but now we're going to have to record it in order to save the Jewish NORP people. Rebbe PERSON did that. You had to have shoulders like Rebbe PERSON.So Rebbe PERSON said King David wrote something should be applied hundreds of years later in the times of Rebbe. That's why Rasha brings down Rebbe PERSON. He says God PERSON said something to be applied hundreds and hundreds of years later in the times of Rebbe. That's why Rasha brings down Rebbe. He says, God said something to be applied hundreds and hundreds of years later in the time of Ezra. So that the Torah WORK_OF_ART, being eternal, could refer to something much later in time. That's just a thought that the Rebishers PERSON. I wanted to share that. Okay. Verse three, Kimasa, Ediths PERSON, and Smyushu shiabdombole, Saus.Like what you engaged in, like what people did in Egypt GPE. The Egyptian NORP culture of immorality, don't do it. Not a good idea. The Egyptians NORP were immoral people, and you should not emulate them. Furthermore, you can think that now you're coming into Canaan GPE. The Canaanites were moral people, and they were more immoral than the Egyptians NORP.Well, Kamas, he had its canon in like the deeds of the Canaanites NORP, the land of Kanan Asherani, maybe askam Shoma LOC, where I'm about to bring you, letasu don't do, or by chukesayim, Lesselech PERSON, do not adapt their cultures. You don't have to do the Canaanite NORP culture thing. And here there's a very interesting teaching that Torah says the Jewish NORP people will find themselves throughout the ages in all kinds of cultures. And we think just because we are here, you know, when in Rome, do it as the Romans. No, you don't have to be, as we say during the Purim story, that the Jewish NORP people in Purim, during the Purim story, preceding to Purim story, were more Persian NORP than the Persians and more Medean than the Medeans. The Jews NORP have to become very, they're into becoming very everything. He says, you don't have to accept every culture, and Rashi PERSON will give some examples. Rashi, Khamasay, this teaches us. Shemaseim Shemashem Shemichim PERSON, that the deeds of the Kenanites, these two cultures, the Egyptians and the Canaanites NORP, were more corrupt, more perverted than allnations. And especially the neighborhood where the Jews NORP lived, Mikulkanah GPE was perverted more than any. Don't learn from your neighbors. Asher I may be aschem Shama PERSON. Magid this teaches us to Eason PERSON a momentthat the nations that were conquered by Israel Mikul Khulom PERSON were the most perverted. And that's one of the reasons that they were conquered. The Jewish people could not conquer the Canaanite NORP lands until they filled their cup with sin. There was such perversion going on with unbelievable. It made Hollywood GPE look clean. Not that there's anything cup with sin. There was such perversion going on was unbelievable. It made Hollywood look clean. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Oh, bechukai sehem NORP, don't walk in their statutes. What did the Torah WORK_OF_ART not already say? Where it says, don't walk in their statutes. What else?E. Elah, Elun NORP nimusish shalom. These are their cultures, their customs, their traditions. Dvotim Hakukim, Allahem PERSON. The things which are statutes for them, things that they must do. For example, tartiyois, the theaters. You don't have to run to the Roman NORP theaters, the stadiums. These are not Jewish NORP things. Jews NORP don't run to the theaters, and they don't run to the stadiums. Just because the country you live in has a culture of theaters and stadiums,it doesn't mean you have to run there. And this is an interesting teaching. Rabbi Meir, E. Mediore says that the most perverted of all the Canaanite NORP nations were the emmorites. Eludakeh, Heoamu NORP. These are the emmerite NORP cultures, which our sages enumerated, what they would do when people died, and they would cut themselves and harm themselves, and all kinds of immorite stuff. You don't have to emulate the culture which you find yourself in. You could be, and this is a term which describes the Jewish NORP people, a people apart. The Jewish people are a people apart. They are unique people that don't fall to the low depths of all the cultures amongst whom they dwell. Verse four,As Mishpott Itasu, you shall do my ordinances, and observe my statutes. Lalech as well to walk in them. I am God, al-Kecham PERSON. I am God, your God.Rashi, As Mishpottai Tassu PERSON, Eil, Dwaramamu, and Bathele and Mishpot PERSON. These are laws stated within the area of civil laws Shillai Nehro PERSON. If they weren't stated in the Torah WORK_OF_ART, then you should have created it on your own. There can't be a prosperous, successful culture that doesn't have law and order. The Torah WORK_OF_ART gives us law and order, but had it not, we would have to create our own law and order.Meskul Kaisa'i, tishmir GPE. This refers to not civil law, but the decrees of the king, She Jihed Zahuram Meeshavalaam PERSON, stuffed at the evil inclination, argues with us and says, Lama lana l'amra. Why do we have to observe it? This is no longer applicable. Why do we have to keep mikveh? Today we have showers and bedaes. Why do we have to keep kosher? Everything is USDA ORG. The answer is these areholy laws. They are not laws of cleanliness, but the evil inclination argues and says their laws of cleanliness. The Torah says they are laws without reason. The Umayshu LOC and the nations of the world Mesheevam alayem respond, criticized. Kegain Achilles Khazer PERSON, eating pig. They say, why can't you eat pig? Everything is USDA government inspected. Ulevis shatnes. They say that Moses PERSON went to Albert Einstein ORG medical school. He knew about trichnosis. He said, you shouldn't eat pig. But now we have all kinds of medicines. You're going to eat pig. Doesn't work that way. This is a law of purity and impurity decreed by God. So the whole mechanism of the red heifer,Lachacharni Hashem PERSON, I am God. Gzai Rekham PERSON, my decree is upon you. I atoroshoilipater PERSON, you're not permitted to be exempted from it. This is what I decree. Lechisbueh PERSON, I'll tippoter mitrecham. Do not exempt yourself from them.I tell you, I don't say. Lomadethi Chahmash, Israel GPE. Now I have completely mastered the wisdom of the Jewish NORP people. Eilch and al-Mahmah, Chahmas NORP, Omas. Let me go master the wisdom of the nations of the world. You don't have to learn all of the wisdom of the Jewish people. Eilch and al-Mahmah PERSON, chokmas, omas, let me go master the wisdom of the nations of the world. You don't have to learn all of the wisdoms of the nations of the world.Verse five, You shmartem as chukaisai. You shall keep my statutes. And my ordinances, as shayas, I am adams, which man will do. And live by them. This is Ashiya, so is some of Adam PERSON, which man will do, and live by them. This is a famous teaching that living by Torah WORK_OF_ART gives us life. Prosperity. I am Hashem, I am Hashem Rashi PERSON. And shmartem as Khosha PERSON, to add all of the other fine points of this section. Shaleip Horek, which the Torah WORK_OF_ART did not, specifically enumerate,Davarachar, another meaning, let in Shmira, Vassil, al-Hukim NORP, to teach us the admonition of guarding and doing for laws without reason with Shmita vassia and keeping and doing the Mishbottom for ordinances, the peace of L'A, Mashbana, al-A-Mash-Mitt GPE. Because earlier, he only mentioned the word, doing for ordinances and keeping for statutes. Here it applies across the board. Vachai bohem, you shall live with them. L'olam habo, not only in this world, but in the world to come. Shimtehmer by Lamazeif PERSON, you say that we're talking about this world, that by doing mitzvahs, you're guaranteed to live in this world. Nobody lives forever. But how they say for you mays in the end, everybody dies. You know, they say life is a terminal condition. Nobody comes out alive. Everybody dies. Only when Messiah PERSON will come, people will stop dying. So obviously, if we're talking about Torah WORK_OF_ART bringing eternal life, we mean in the world to come. Ani Hashem says Rashi Neman PERSON, Leshalem Sochar PERSON, I can be trusted to pay reward. If not in this world, then in the world to come. End of today's Torah WORK_OF_ART portion.
