Hey, how we doing on a Friday afternoon, the rare Friday day game? Welcome into this live Locked on Tigers WORK_OF_ART postcast. I am your host, Jake Ritma, formerly with 971, the ticket, now host of Locked on Tigers WORK_OF_ART postcasts. And every now and then, you just, you have those days at the ballpark that they're flop. It's, it's just kind of a meh game all the way through. The offense doesn't show up.The opposition has their way late in the game. And thank goodness, we got the NFL draft in Detroit GPE, right? We're a football city. No, I kid, I kid. But if you're watching on the YouTube stream, obviously I'm reping the game. And thank goodness, we got the NFL draft in Detroit GPE, right? Where a football city. No, I kid, I kid. But if you're watching on the YouTube stream, obviously I'm reping the Lions ORG today after Detroit showed out and broke some records at the NFL ORG draft. But this is Locked on Tigers WORK_OF_ART postcast. We're fired up to be live on the YouTube channel with you. If you haven't yet, make sure you subscribe. It's Lockdown Sports Detroit ORG. Subscribe to the channel. Doesn't cost you anything. We're bringing you instant reaction after every Tigers game, even when they flop like they did today. But there are some positives and we'll talk about it. First, Reese Olson PERSON, he was dealing on the mound. Another really good start for him.We will break down that offense and what our concern level is and what needs to change. It's all straight ahead on this live edition of Locked on Tigers Postcast ORG. But before we go any further, today's episode is brought to you by Fandul ORG. Make every moment more right now. New customers get $150 in bonus bets guaranteed. That's $150.000 win or lose. I got to do is visit fanduel.com slash locked on to get started. So in a day like today, I don't know, and some of this is dependent upon my mood, right, wrong, or indifferent. But I'm watching the game today. And it just, it never felt like the tigers were into it mentally. Maybe it was the, the poor plate approaches, the way Seth Lugo PERSON just had his way for thefirst, it really felt like, I mean, his entire outing, which will go through step by step. But you never really felt, at least this is, again, one person's reaction and instant reaction in the moment. I'm sure if I sat down and really collected my thoughts further, I would have a more sophisticated take on this, but it was just that game. It was a shrug of the shoulders. Man, the guys just don't have it today. When you play 162 games, I think that's going to happen from time to time. Maybe it was the different schedule with the Friday day game because so rare to have a Friday day game, the first game of the series, the weekend series, be in the middle of the day like that.I'm making excuses. I'm making excuses for another largely pedestrian day at the plate for the hitters one through nine. I mean, yes, you go through the box score and you guys like Mark Kanna, who we can always count on with two hits. Spencer Torkelson did have one hit, but man, that was a big spot. Let me check my notes. Was that bottom of the eighth, two on, two out, Spencer Torkelson PERSON just mowed down, strikes out.And the guy just looks a little bit lost at the plate. And if you've watched these shows consistently, you know, I harp on it time and time again, but my concern level with Spencer Torkelson PERSON is really, really high. But we'll break down the offense in a moment here. Let's jump into Reese Olson PERSON's performance because I think Reese Olson was really, really good. Once again, longest outing of the season, seven innings, three hits, only gave up one earned run.And for a while there, it looked like it was going to be another one zero game. It would have been the third one zero game the Tigers played this season. They've won one and lost one. But you can't just keep, you can't expect to win when you get shut out. There I go, pointing out the most obvious thing in baseball. Wow, so glad I tuned in to Lockdown Tigers Postcast ORG for that astute observation that you can'twin if you don't score. And it feels like the Tigers, when Reese Olson PERSON is on the mound, the offense just doesn't show up because remember, it was the one zero game against the Rangers ORG. And Reese Olson's PERSON record is not, it's going to be not so pretty as he gets hit with the loss. He's now 0 and 4. But to my knowledge, it feels like all four losses are tough luck losses and why we don't really need to pay a whole ton of attention to the actual record next to a starting pitcher's name. But my goodness, Tiger's offense has got to figure out a way to help Reese Holson PERSON out when he's on the mound.Because to go seven innings allow just three hits and only one earn run while striking out eight and only walking three, that's the definition of a tough luck loss. And again, you look at the way he attacked the strike zone, 62 strikes out of 100 pitches. And again, it's a guy that doesn't deserve to be hit with the loss in a day that he pitched as well as he did. Now, the bullpen, we can't say the same. Bullpen gets absolutely rocked in that ninth inning where the game is still on the line.I mean, to be in a one-nothing game heading to the ninth and give up seven runs, very disappointing from a team whose strength is the bullpen. And it started with the way Tyler Holton PERSON set the tone. I mean, the guy plunk two batters was, he could not find the strike zone. And the way that that inning unraveled really felt like the old brand of baseball that the Tigers ORG play where you're watching. And you just think, my goodness, this, there's just no, we're not going to score any runs and we're not going to get anybody out. And it's just a, you know, it's a defeating, defeated feeling to watch the Tigers ORG in that state the way the ninth inning played out, just batter after batter, rounding the bases. Yeah, the bases clearing triple from Bobby Witt, Jr. And I know at that point the game was pretty much out of reach, especially on a day where youknew the offense wasn't going to do anything. But it felt like insult to injury. And to go back to my original opening statement, it was just a day that the Tigers ORG, Tigers never had it. I mean, you could almost go back to when that major play by Adam Frazier PERSON was made in right field, robbing the home run from Parker Meadows PERSON that this game was over after that. We could have just called it and said, all right, the wind has been taken out of the sales. We just watched Adam Frazier leap over the fence in right fields, take a home run away from Parker Meadows PERSON.By the way, Parker Meadows PERSON poor guy probably feels like he just can't buy a hit at this point. And not to mention the, Frazier was able to complete the double play. I forget who was on first at that moment, but you go from a two run home run to take the lead to still trailing one to nothing. And that was, they talked about it on the broadcast, but that was obviously the turning point as well. So if I'm Reese Olson PERSON in that moment, I'm sure it's probably thinking, well, probably not going to get the win today. And I know that's not the most competitive way to go about it or tothink about it, but it just was so clear from the jump that this offense was not bringing anything. But Reese Olson, I mean, you go on Twitter ORG and you're going to see him on the pitching ninja account or the pitch ninja account because he was making batters for the royals look silly with that change up. A couple of really, really nice instances where you thought, wow, Reese Olson's PERSON stuff is nasty right now. And even though he's not going to get his first win of the season today on April 26, if he can continue to put forth that kind of effort, that type of consistency as he has in the early season, his luck will turn around. Now, I say that, but that's also with the hope and the assumption that maybe this tiger's offense will turn around. But the home run from or the home run saving play by Frazier was just an incredible catch that again, he took a home run away from Meadows PERSON. And at that point, it felt like, okay, this game is not going, it's not going to be the one. It's not going to be the day for the Tigers ORG. So final score, eight nothing. And it was a one zero game through eight innings of baseball. But the Royals erupt for seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to really just cruise to, I guess it would be the definition of an easy win after that, after the eighth inning. It was one zero for the majority of the game. But once they broke that game open, obviously there was just no, wasn't meant to be one zero for the majority of the game, but once they broke that game open, obviously, there was just no, wasn't meant to be for the Tigers ORG. So with the loss, and also it should be noted, I know it's only April, but playing these in-division seriesagainst a team like the Royals who have gotten off to such a good start at 17 and 10, it would be, I mean, to lose the series opener is very, very disappointing. Now you've got to come back, win two a row to make sure you keep taking series, keep taking series. That's been the message that we've been going with each and every series in the early going. And the Tigers ORG have done a pretty good job of that, which would explain, you know, the record above 500 at 14 and 12. But for whatever reason, they just haven't been playing good baseball at home. At Comerica Park, they are just four and eight. So we're going to break down that lackluster offense to put it kindly and what needs to change and how the Tigers ORG can improve. But before we go any further, I want to tell you about today's presenting sponsor, which we do next. This episode of Locked Tigers postcast is brought to you by DoorDash ORG. So Tigers fall in the opening of a weekend series, three-game weekend series against the Kansas City GPE. Royals ORG, Royals come in and dominate on the pitching side of things. Tigers ORG bats were off balance all game long. And not to mention, the Royals ORG made some really incredible plays defensively. And they were ready to go and the Tigers were not which is evidenced by the eight nothing score so really curious your thoughts as well let me know in the comments if you're checking us out onyoutube the youtube channel is locked on sports detroit we're going to be doing this after tigers games and keep the ball rolling i've got the lion stuff on today with the draft. But I appreciate everybody tuning in. As always, if you're catching us on the audio-only version on Spotify, Apple Podcasts ORG, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks so much for doing that as well. Now, Reese Olson PERSON was really good. Unfortunately, he gets hit with the tough luck loss. He's 0. 4 on the season. And let's talk about this offense. The offense shut out again. It is the fourth time the Tiger's offense has been shut out this season. And really, really disappointing when you consider the way this team has been playing and the way they've been stockpiling wins and seriesand a little bit of momentum after taking two of three from both the twins and the race, a really productive road trip. You come back to Comerica Park FAC. The city is alive and well with the NFL ORG draft. It's buzzing. Now, it is an earlier start during the day on a Friday.Maybe that had an adverse impact, but both the Royals and Tigers ORG had to play in this game. Again, breaking news there. And it didn't seem to affect the Royals ORG. And then, though, that said, I mean, their hitters didn't really come to life until the ninth inning. But we are back to yelling and complaining about this Tiger ORG's offense. And maybe it's the plate approaches or lack thereof. But again, this, this type of lackluster offensive performance really brought me back to the state we've been in for a lot ofthese early April losses or early season losses in April when the Tigers ORG lose baseball games. It's because the offense doesn't show up. And it was another time where a starting pitcher looked like a Sionkana PERSON in Seth Lugo PERSON. I mean, he had a career high in strikeouts. He entered today, not necessarily a dominant pitcher in the strikeout category. In fact, he wasn't a strikeout pitcher, but the Tigers ORG made him look like astrikeout pitcher. So he gets the win. He's four and one on the season. So he is having a good year. But seven innings, just three hits, no earned runs, nine strikeouts. He only walked to.And he was just pounding the zone the entire afternoon. 65 pitches for strikes of his 103 total, just a 1.66 ERA on the day. And then the bullpen continued it as well. And when you get up as much as the Royals did in that ninth inning, then you don't even have to go to anybody. Not to say Will Smith isn't an important bullpen member for the Royals ORG,but the Royals ORG are able to save some of those arms for and save that bullpen for the next two games in the series. So if you're Detroit GPE, this was the game where you look at it and you think this is when we're at our worst, right? Everybody hang in there. Sometimes that happens. I talk about all the time the difference between doing a show on the YouTube or doing a show when I was with 97 won the ticket, the radio station. You had a little cough button. So you had that instance. And all you have to do is hit that cough button and cough it out. But we're okay. If you're driving along, listening to the show on the audio only version, everything is good.If you're on the YouTube ORG version, just had to have a sip of the water. We're good. Everybody is going to be okay. We're going to survive. So here we go. Tigers lose 8-0 to the Royals. And again, it was just a bummer of a day, bummer of a day at the ballpark. And it looked like there was a lot of fans that wouldn't normally be there. I saw throughout the course of the broadcast, you know, various NFL ORG teamsbeing represented, because obviously with the draft being in downtown Detroit GPE, you got a lot of visitors to the Motor City. And as it's been well documented and well reported, the NFL ORG draft record was set for the most first day attendees yesterday. And so the Tigers ORG put on quite the show for him. Just kidding, of course. They lose 8-0. But that said, the offense. So a couple of at-bats that you thought maybe this game could change a little bit. And we've said so many nice things about Javi Baez PERSON throughout the last couple of days because he deserves it. He's played really well. But today, bad at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. It was where the game, I mean, obviously Frazier PERSON's catch robbing the home run was the biggest play of the game. But you had Lugo kind of really starting to show some fatigue on the mound in the seventh inning there and kind of laboring to get through that inning to where you had the nine pitch walk drawn by Colt Keith, which was one of his better at-bats of the season, which again isn't saying much, but Colt Keith did a nice job of a nine-pitch walk, getting on base, that put two on two out big spot for hobby bias still a one nothing game you would love to see hobby bias come through with a big hit there but instead it ain't happening big spot two on two out in that seventh inning and um hobby popped up so um another opportunity that the tigers had that I wrote down bottom of the eighth, we know what this Tigers team does in the bottom of the eighth. They score, in the eighth inning for that matter, they score a lot of runs. And they just, they had an opportunity two on, two out, Spencer Torkelson PERSON at the plate, and just another bad at bad, another strikeout. So the concern level for Spencer Torkelson PERSON is back, you know, sound the alarm type of thing because Spencer Torkelson PERSON is back to looking lost at the plate. He is, and I wouldn't even say back. He just the slow, troubled start continues for a guy that you had really, really high expectations for.And then when you run through the, the tiger's batting order of the lack of offensive prowess, for lack of a better term, there's just nobody in that lineup, especially when you get past the first five hitters that poses a threat of doing anything. You know, Matt Beirling had one hit, Colt Keith with one hit in the ninth inning on a broken bat, but Baez, Rogers, Meadows PERSON, just a bunch of goose eggs next to their name. And the batting average plummets, there's no, I mean, the slug, the OPS, slugging percentage, you name it. I'm not going to bore everybody with a ton of stats, just as a reminder that this offense isn't good and something needs to be done. And I've talked about this in episodes past, but maybe it's shake some things up with some call-ups. Obviously, the call-up of Buddy Kennedy, my favorite Tiger and Wenzell Perez PERSON, that was a very, very much-needed spark for this tiger's offense when they were called up and a breath of fresh air. So maybe this Tigers ORG team needs to continue to lean into that and keep guys fresh, keep that roster or keep bringing guys up that would help that roster. So let me know what you think as well in the comments. The offense, once again, nowhere to be found and the Tigers lose 8 to nothing. They waste another really, really good outing from Reese Olson and drop the opener to the Kansas City Royals ORG. We're going to wrap it up with a Q&A of what needs to change and how the Tiger ORG's offense can figure out a way to be better because it is bad right now. That's coming up next.Today's show is made possible by Fandul. That's right. Fandual ORG, proud presenting sponsor. slash credit card. Tough one for the Tigers. Hopefully they can bounce back tomorrow with Casey Mize going for Detroit GPE and try to breathe some life into that offense that could certainly use it. They're shutout for the fourth time in the early going. Yes, fourth time by April 26. I need to employ a full research department here to determine if that's the most in or that's the most since when. But I feel like four shutouts in 26 games. Not good. No other way to put it because here I go again. Make sure you make everybody get their pen and paper out and write this down. If you get shut out, you're not going to win the game. So that said, tigers lose eight to nothing. Some more bad atbats by some guys that you're just waiting to break out of this slow start, Spencer Torkelson PERSON, in particular. Parker Meadows PERSON has a home run robbed. The guy, poor guy can't buy a hit. And, um, morale is down a little bit. I feel like after the promising road trip, the way it ended against the raise, they're losing 7-5 in a back-and-forth game, and then the off day, they just didn't feel like they came ready to play today. And that's really frustrating, especially because he had Reese Olson PERSON on the moundgiving you everything he had. And, you know, giving you, when your starter goes out and throws seven innings of one-run baseball, That's a game you got to win. And I, again, forgive me for sounding like a broken record, but it's been the same story. When this Tiger ORG's team is bad, the offense doesn't show up. And when you don't score runs, you're not going to win. I don't care how good the pitching is.I don't care how good the defense is. We know about the bullpen. We've talked out like that how good they are. They were not today. Tyler Holton PERSON looked like he had the yips out there. And I hope I know I'm not speaking that into existence, but he just beans two batters with the bases loaded. He had no idea where the ball was going. And I'm sitting there watching writing notes like, just end this game already. The offense isn'tthere. The royals are just pouring it on in the ninth. It's going to be the fourth time the Tigers ORG have shut out. So I don't mean to spew the negative energy. We've got a few more people tuning in on the YouTube. But this was just one of those lousy performances that if you take the tape, if this was an NFL ORG locker room, I can just picture the coach, you know, having a using a prop like a VHS something and just smashing it with a hammerbecause this is the type of game that you just want to forget. You don't want to go back and watch the film. You just turn the page and be better tomorrow and talk about some things that need to change. And I think it's the plate approach. And Craig Monroe PERSON talked about it on the telecast. He has at length where guys just when this tiger's offense employs the right type of play approach and then goes out and executes, it can be okay. And there were some games recently against the, the raise in which we saw that. And, you know, I go back to that Monday night game where they were taking the extra base. They were playing aggressive. They were putting the pressure on the opposition and compare that to a game like today. And it's just it's a totally different team. So that part's frustrating as well. It's one of those games that I almost glad that it was a Friday during the day because now we can just turn the page, move on from it and be ready for the rest of the weekend, Saturday, Sunday.Put our NFL draft hats on for tonight and go from there. Dan Tune in on the YouTube ORG. Hey, Dan Fadrosi PERSON, appreciate you tuning in. And yeah, is it the plate approach or coaching? And it's a good question because I think the coaching of the Tigers ORG hitters has been a point of contention a lot of times. And it's hard when you, I think baseball is one of those sports that because you play 162 games, the coaching takes such a different stance than compared to a football coach where you're watching film and you've got all week to prepare for the game. And there's just so much, such a different approach with baseball where you're playing every day. So it's, it's the war of attrition. It's the war of the monotony of everything that it takes to play. And I'm making excuses. And this is one thing that I actually get upset about from time to time is how, how we somehow talk about how tough baseball players have it because they have to play every single day. But Keith Beauregard, the hitting coach for the Tigers ORG, and you feel like maybe he could do something to try to solve this offense or try to breathe some life into the offense. And I don't think it's a case of just running into a good pitcher from here and here and there because Seth Lugo is not like a Cy Young WORK_OF_ART candidate by any means, even though the Tigers ORG made them look like that. I just, I think it's a bad day. And hopefully we get back to the way this offense was playing in Tampa Bay GPE and in Minnesota prior to that because this was this was the offense that we sawin the Rangers series the last time. Maybe it's Comerica Park, honestly. The Tigers ORG have been so much better away from home. So I think when you have these types of games, you start looking for explanations, you start grasping for reasoning. And maybe it is an overly simplistic approach to say the Tigers just didn't have it today, got to come back tomorrow. But the Tigers, four and eight at home and ten and four and four on the road.So interesting, the home road splits early in the game. And maybe the friendly confines at Comerica Park FAC just aren't doing it for some reason. And we'll have to figure that out. But Tigers lose this one, 8 to nothing. Kansas City takes it eight to nothing with seven runs in the ninth. Tigers waste a really good start from Reese Olson. He goes seven innings allowing just oneearned run, but gets the tough luck loss. Try to be better tomorrow. Casey Mize PERSON takes the bump for the Tigers. Until then, have a wonderful afternoon evening whenever you're listening to this. And we will talk to you right after the game tomorrow. Remember back to a later start tomorrow, the timing are all wonky this time around with the draft being in town. So let me just make sure.
