So I am here for you and you should be here with me. In honor of it being a special year, this year, a significant milestone for the Boston Red Sox honoring the 2004 Boston Red Sox ORG team that broke the curse and won the World Series after so, so many years. And in honor of it being the 20th anniversary of that season, I'm going to be doing a 10 episodeseries in which every Thursday I will be dropping an episode that honors and remembers and looks back on the 2004 Boston Red Sox ORG in some way. Now, you might be asking what that's going to look like. So I wanted to give a little bit of an overview as to what you can expect on this 10 episode series. And part of it is going to be some lookbacks on the key players who were part of that run. The biggest players on that Red Sox ORG team that contributed the most and made the biggestimpact towards that team. Obviously, everybody who put on a Red Sox uniform and played in 2004 had some sort of big role in them winning the World Series that year. They don't win the World Series without the particular makeup of guys that they have. But we're going to be going over and dissecting the performances of all of the biggest players on that team. What made them so successful? Why exactly did they go on such a historic run in the way that they did? And what drove them to get to the point where they were atof winning the World Series? Now, if there is a specific player on that team that you would love to hear more about on this 10 episode series, feel free to let me know either in the comments on YouTube ORG, tweet at me, message me on Instagram. I am happy to incorporate whatever you want into these episodes. The point is for these episodes to be fun, remembering a team that was so special and made Red Sox ORG baseball from then on so enjoyable to watch with all the success thatthey have had since then in the championships that they have won. So many historic players to put on that uniform and play on that team. So I'm happy to listen to any ideas you might have of certain players that you might want to be dissected or certain topics that you want to hear more about. And another key aspect of this is that you can expect some guests. I will not reveal those guests right now because I do want them to be a surprise, but I think you're going to enjoy these guests. And let's just say there will be some people who can definitely offer some perspective on that 2004 Red Sox ORG season. So you have that to be excited about. Again, this is going to be every Thursday from today and then up through 10 weeks. So I am not a math person and cannot off the top of my head. Figure out what 10 weeks out from now is, but I'm sure you probably can if you have a calendar in front of you and you can count the Thursdays. And once you land on 10, that will be when the last episode of the series drops. Now, there is a lot to the 2004 Red Sox ORG season, lots of things that had to go right in orderfor them to get to the point where they could win a championship because going into the season, people counted them out. And even for a good chunk of the season, people counted them out that year and did not think that they were going to be able to go all the way. So lots of things that they had to put together late in the season. And that's what makes it as special as it was. There were so many people that had lived their entire life up to that point and hadn't seen the Red Sox ORG win a championship. And if they were an older Red Sox fan at the time in 2004, it was very possible that they didn't know what that feeling was like of seeing their favorite team win the World Series until then. And to me, they had a group of players that were all so determined to win and wanted to show the world that they are the Boston Red Sox ORG and the Boston Red Sox are special. And just a bunch of guys who wanted togenuinely do it for the city of Boston GPE just really loved and appreciated the fan base, felt like the Boston Red Sox ORG fans deserved to see their team win a championship. And that's so wholesome. And that's what makes Red Sox ORG baseball so special even to this day is that the players genuinely seem to enjoy playing in Boston GPE. And this is a fan base that doesn't take those championships for granted. They love and appreciate those championships. And they don't give up on their granted. They love and appreciate those championships and they don't give up on their teams. They are diehards. That could be some positive and some negative. However you look at it, it really just depends. But very passionate fan base. And as a professional baseball player, knowing how many historic players have come through this organization, has to feel good for the guys that put on that uniform every day. So there were tons of players on the Red Sox ORG roster that made big contributions. And I'll definitely make sure that none of them go unnoticed in this 10-part series. Why am I doing this? The answer to that is it's very important for us to look back on it and remember a team that shocked the world, especially in a season like this, where it's a very different Red Sox team than what we saw in 2004, a team that's really trying to establish itself and figure out the cornerstone pieces that they're going to build around moving forward. And you look at the 2004 team,a team that basically set the president for teams moving forward and how they should be constructed. And if you ever get discouraged by this season and what the Red Sox ORG are doing, and I know last night's game against the Braves ORG was definitely incredibly frustrating and could be a game that has you very discouraged today. So just remember when you wake up every Thursday that you are going to get a fun, happy conversation about the 2004 Boston Red Sox ORG with some cool guests that might appear. You don't know. You have to stay tuned to find out who that might be, what I might be referring to, and what it entails moving forward. You won't know unless you check it out. So just remember in a season like this, when things aren't always going right for the Boston Red Sox, just remember to take a minute to look back on what they did in 2004 and what they have done as a whole since then. And if you do that, you can look back on being a Boston Red Sox ORG fanas a joyous one. And there are so many fun memories there. So I'm going to do my best to remind you of a lot of those fun memories that you can look back on from 2004, because nobody can take those memories away from you. And coming up, I'm going to be refreshing you on the Red Sox regular season in 2004, what made it so difficult for them to actually do what they did and just refresh your memory a little bit on something. And guess what? It did. It all went right in the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004. But the regular season for the Red Sox ORG was definitely interesting.Terry Francona was the manager, and it started with an off season that the Red Sox ORG were pretty active. On November 28, 2003, Casey Fossum, Brandon Lyon, Jorge De La Rosa, and Michael Goss PERSON were traded by the Red Sox to the Diamondbacks for Kurt Schilling. Then on December 16th, a few weeks later, Mark Bellhorn was acquired by the Red Sox ORG from the Colorado Rockies as part of a conditional deal, another key player.December 22nd, so about a week after that, Gabe Kapler was signed as a free agent by the Red Sox ORG, and then the next day they signed Poki Reese as a free agent by the Red Sox, and then the next day they signed Poki Reese PERSON as a free agent. Then on January 7th, 2004, Keith Foke was signed as a free agent by the Red Sox ORG. So lots of productivity there. Little did they know actually how productive and valuable these guys were going to be.If you look back on the offseason now, it was a pretty genius offseason overall for this Boston Red Sox ORG team. But at the time, you never would have really known how good these guys really were going to turn out to be. So then following the Red Sox exit from the postseason by the Yankees in game seven of the ALCS. Red Sox manager, Grady Little PERSON, was fired from his position on October 27th, one business day after the 2003 World Series EVENT. That was such a devastating way to go out, especially to the Yankees ORG of all teams. Little had accumulated a 188 and 136 record with the Red Sox, received a $250,000 parting gift, as well as $60,000 inperformance bonuses. So then about a month went by. After a month of searching, the Red Sox hired former Philadelphia GPE manager Terry Francona on December 4, 2003. They were considering other candidates like Anaheim bench coach Joe Madden, Texas first base coach, Jamarlo Hale, and Los Angeles third base coach, Glenn Hoffman PERSON.But they settled on Francona and gave him a three-year deal an option for a fourth. And oh my gosh, I'm sure they were not regretting that after the fact because how successful was he with the Red Sox ORG? What a crazy and a life-changing decision by then. Then things were building up to the season. During the 2003-04 off season, the Red Sox continued to prepare for spring training into the season. They had their ace pitcher and Kurt showing PERSON. They had their closer and Keith Folk PERSON. And then there were a lot of people that were showing up for spring training games that were excited about the team and expectations at first were high for this team, that this could finally be the year that the Red Sox ended their championship drought. Then they played a couple spring training exhibitiongames against a couple of college teams that they won pretty handily. And then they go into the season and they started off about mid tier and they were winning games. They were losing games. It's baseball. You know, that just was what it was. So they were 11 and 8 against the Yankees ORG, which was something to note. They also were 14 and 5 against the Tampa Bay ORG raise. And then they were 14 and 5 against the Toronto Blue Jays ORG. And they actually had a losing record against Baltimoreof 9 and 10. But those were their records against the division that year. Also notable transactions to happen that season, about midway through the season when the Red Sox hit a low and they were struggling and expectations were starting to get a little bit lower for this Red Sox ORG team. They made some notable moves to try to improve and address some of the holes that they were feeling. On June 22nd, 2004, Curtis Laskannick was signed as a free agent, and then on July 14th, Pedro Astacio PERSON was signed as a free agent. Then on July 21st, about a week later, Ricky Gutierrez was acquired by the Red Sox from the Cubs ORG as part of a conditional deal three days before Terry Adams was acquired from the Blue Jays in exchange for minor leaguer John Haddock PERSON. So then they didn't really waste too much time because then this big blockbuster trade comes up on July 31st, 2004 DATE. I'm sure you already know what I'm going to say, but it was a four-team trade. Orlando Cabrera was acquired by the Red Sox from the Expos, and Doug Mankowicz PERSON was acquired by the Red Sox from the Twins ORG.In exchange, the Red Sox then sent Star shortstop, Nomar Garcia-Para PERSON, who, by the way, was my first Red Sox ORG jersey. So definitely hurt a little bit. And Matt Merton to the Cubs ORG. And then in a separate trade, Dave Roberts was acquired by the Red Sox ORG from the Dodgers in exchange for Henry Stanley PERSON. Dave Roberts PERSON, legendary, that steal.I'll be touching on that a little bit later. But then on August 6th, Mike Myers PERSON was selected off waivers by the Red Sox from the Mariners. And on August 31st, Sandy Martinez was purchased by the Red Sox from the Indians ORG. So lots of guys that came into the organization midway through the season because the Red Sox really were struggling. And they couldn't seem to figure out why they couldn't get themselves together. And I think when the Red Sox traded No More, there were a lot of people confused and upset, but the new guys assimilated themselves pretty well into this Boston Red Sox ORG lineup and fit in pretty well. And obviously it worked out in the long run for Boston GPE. No more was such a key figure on this Boston Red Sox ORG team. So it definitely hurt when he got traded, but sometimes you have to make hard decisions in order to have it pay off in the long run. Then the Red Sox started playing better baseball again in the last couple months of the regular season DATE. They jumped back up in the standings and they were getting closer tothe Yankees again, which is what they wanted. The opening day lineup for Boston was Johnny Damon PERSON, Bill Mueller, Mani Ramirez, David Ortiz, Kevin Malar, Gabe Kapler, Jason Baratech, Mark Bellhorn PERSON, and Poki Reese with Pedro Martinez PERSON on the bump. I mean, talk about absolute legends and what a time that was and what a team that was. The struggles midseason were due to injuries, but also inconsistency and defensive woes, and they actually fell more than eight games behind the Yankees at the time. A bright spot did come on July 24th when they overcame a five-run deficit as Bill Muellerhit a game-winning home run to right center off Mariano Rivera PERSON. That was the game that also featured the infamous brawl between A-Rod and Jason Veritech PERSON. That will never be forgotten. I love Jason Veritech PERSON, by the way. Great to have around. I'm glad he's still around this Red Sox ORG team.Hard player not to root for and not to like. So lots of things that went on during the regular season that year. And once the Red Sox ORG were able to start playing good baseball again, fans were able to then get back into that mindset of, okay, maybe we do have a chance. And baseball is a long season. Every team goes through lows, but for some reason, nothing for that period of time wasgoing right for the Red Sox ORG. And then something sparked again. Their chemistry was back and they started playing good baseball again. And during that stretch where they were really struggling, there were people out there that were starting to call the Red Sox ORG frauds. They had such a high payroll. And people were saying, these guys are so bad for the payroll that they have. And obviously the players didn't like to hear that. Nobody likes to hear that about themselves and their teammates. So something clicked for them and changed and they were able to figure it out and went on this historic postseason run that I am going to be talking about next and is something that will never be forgotten by Red Sox Nation ORG.If you're looking for a fun way to play daily fantasy sports, prize picks absolutely is the place for you. After a regular season in which the Red Sox had been called frauds during one point and things just weren't clicking for them and they really weren't looking like they were able to figure it out. They then hit a surge in the late couple months of the regular season and started to play really good baseball again and it was awesome to see and then they were able to go into the postseason with a sense of confidence. Then they entered the division series, and they began the playoffs by sweeping the AL West champion Anaheim Angels ORG.The Red Sox blew out the Angels 9 to 3 in game one, scoring seven of those runs in the fourth inning. However, Kurt Schilling did suffer a torn tendon when he was hit by a line drive in that game. The injury was exacerbated when he fielded a ball rolling down the first baseline. So that definitely was a little bit of a detriment to the Red Sox ORG.And then the second game pitched by Pedro stayed close until Boston scored four runs in the ninth to win eight to three. Game three looked to be a blowout, but up being a nail-biter as Vlad Guerrero hit a grand slam off Mike Timlin in the top of the seventh inning to tie it at six runs apiece. But then Mr. Clutch, Big Poppy, David Ortiz PERSON, who was actually known for his clutch hitting, delivered in the 10th inningwith a game-winning two-run Homer off Jared Washburn PERSON, which sailed over the green monster. This was just something that became normal for the Red Sox ORG as he just continued to be clutch and get those big hits when the Red Sox ORG needed them. The Red Sox advanced to a rematch in the 2004 ALCS against the Yankees ORG. And by the way, going into this series, can we just acknowledge how deep the rivalry really was then? It's just not the same anymore. The players back then truly went at it and truly hated each other. Now I feel like the players don't hate each other as much. The fans are loosening up on the rivalry. It seems I personally dislike the Yankees ORG just as much as I did then, and that'll never change. But I do feel like there are fans who don't necessarily hate them as much and vice versa with Yankees ORG fans anymore. It's definitely a little bit disappointing that the rivalry has deteriorated a bit from what it was back then. Just not the same anymore. But the vibes were very high for the Red Sox ORG going into that series. The Yankees were looking to get back to the World Series like they have been in the previous season. The Red Sox had high hopes going into it, hoping they would finally vanquish their nemesis from the Bronx GPE, but it was absolute disaster to start the series. Schilling pitched through the torn tendon, and he was routed for six runs in three innings, so definitely not ideal for the Boston Red Sox ORG. And then the Yankee starter Mike Musina retired the first 19 Red Sox ORG batters that came to the platebefore Mark Bellhorn broke it up with a double with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Despite the Red Sox ORG best effort to come back in that game, which they did score seven runs to make it eight, seven, but they fell short and lost 10 to 7. Then in game two, already with the Yankees leading 1 to nothing for most of the game, John Olerud hit a 2-run home run to put the Yankees ORG up for good in the game. The Red Sox were soon down three games to none after a really bad 19 to 8 loss in game 3 at home. In that game, the two clubs actually set the record for most runs scored in a league championship series game, which is really interesting. At that point in the history of baseball, no team had come back to win from a 3-0 series deficit.Only the 1998 Atlanta Braves in 1999 New York Mets had ever gotten as far as a game six. So obviously, naturally, that meant people were counting the Red Sox ORG out because what else would they do? I mean, they were down 3-0 at that point. It didn't look like it was plausible for the Red Sox ORG to come back. But they had other plans than the famous Don't Let Us Win Today line from Kevin Millar PERSON rang through. Little did we know how true that was going to be.And little did we know how historic that statement was going to be today. Looking back on it now, don't let us win today. And sure enough, the Red Sox just took it one game at a time from there. In game four, when the Red Sox found themselves facing elimination, they were trailing four to three in the ninth inning with Yankees closer Mariano Rivera on the mound. Ridiculously good closer, one of the best to ever do it. He issued a walk to Kevin Millar. Then Dave Roberts came in to pinch run and properly stole second base. The really famous steel that took place that really changed the momentum of the series. And looking back on it now was the key moment. It absolutely was the turning point because he then scored on an RBI single by Bill Mueller PERSON, which sent the game to extra innings. And then the Red Sox went on to win the game on a two-run, home run by who but Big Poppy in the 12th inning. Then in game five, the Red Sox were again down late, this time by the score of four to twoas a result of Derek Jeter's PERSON bases clearing triple. But the socks struck back in the eighth inning. Ortiz, again, hit a home run over the green monster to bring the socks within a run. Then Jason Veritech hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Dave Roberts PERSON and scoring the tying run. That game ended up going 14 innings, capped off by many squandered opportunities by the Yankees ORG. They actually were one for 13 with runners in scoring position.Yikes. In the top of the 12th inning, Tim Wakefield PERSON came in from the bullpen. And Veritech ORG was catching. Usually Doug Mirabelli, who was Tim Wakefield's PERSON personal catcher, was out there. But Veritech had to do it and had trouble with Wakefield PERSON's tricky knuckle balls in the 13th inning. He allowed three past balls. And then the third and last of those gavethe Yankees runners on second and third with two outs. The Red Sox were spared, though, as Ruben Sierra struck out to end the inning. And then in the bottom of the 14th, you guessed it, David Ortiz PERSON again sealed the win with a game-winning RBI single that brought home Johnny Damon PERSON. That game actually set the record for longest postseason game in terms of time at five hours and 49 minutesand for the longest ALCS game 14 innings, though they have been broken since then. It was just a very long game, and Red Sox ORG fans were obviously relieved at the end because they won, but definitely would not go back to the nerves that were taking place during that game. Then the series returned to Yankee Stadium for game six.Kurt Schilling pitched on an ankle that was very much still in pain, and he's known for the bloody white sock that it was wrapped in. And he struck out four, walked none, and only allowed one run over seven innings to lead the team to victory. Mark Bellhorn also contributed as he hit a three-run home run in the fourth. It actually was called a double originally, but then the umpires reviewed it and agreed thatthe ball had actually gone into the stands before a ball back into the field of play. So then a key play came in the bottom of the eighth inning with Derek Jeter on first and Arod facing Bronson-Aroyo PERSON. Bronson-Oroyo PERSON was so underrated, by the way. He definitely was not talked about enough, his contribution. Aeron hit a ground ball down the first baseline. Arroyo PERSON fielded it and reached out to tag him as he raced down the line. Rodriguez slapped at the ball and it came loose, but it really didn't work in the long term because Jeter scored and he ended up on second, but then they ended up calling Rodriguez out on interference and returned Jeter to first base. So it kind of backfired on him. So the Red Sox ORG ended up winning that game. Lots of notable things that happened in that game. Keith Folk PERSON closed it out for the Red Sox to force a game seven. And then in that game, the Red Sox ORG completed the historic comeback on thestrength of Derek Lowe's one hit, one run pitching, and Johnny Damon's two home runs, including a grand slam that he hit in the second inning off the first pitch of reliever Javier Vasquez PERSON. And then they defeated the Yankees 10 to 3. What an amazing feeling. Ortiz had the game-winning RBIs in games four and five and ended up being named ALCS EVENT MVP.I mean, obviously, he just fueled the fire in that team and carried them through that series. So it was awesome. Then there was nothing stopping the Red Sox ORG after that. They then went on to the World Series and swept the St. Louis Cardinals ORG. And they had posted the best record in the major leagues that season. So a lot of people thought the cards were going to win that series. They had also previously defeated the Red Sox in the 1946 and and 1967 series, with both of those going seven games. The Red Sox just had so much momentum. Began the series with an 11 to 9 win marked by Bellhorn PERSON's game winning home run off the pesky pool. He basically said afterwards that he just did what he needed to do.That's what makes them professionals. They do what they need to do. It was the highest scoring World Series EVENT opening game ever. Then the Red Sox went on to win game two in Boston GPE. Thanks to another sensational performance by shilling. The Red Sox won both these games despite making four errors in each game. And then in game three, Pedro shut out the Cardinals for seven innings. And the Cardinals ORG only made innings and the Cardinals only made one real threat. That threat did happen in the third inning. They put runners on second and third with no outs, but their rally was then killed by pitcher Jeff Supon PERSON's base running gaff with no out. Supon should have scored easily from third on a Larry Walker PERSON ground ball to second baseman Bellhorn PERSON.But as Bellhorn threw out Walker at first base, Supon PERSON inexplicably froze after taking several steps toward home and was thrown out by David Ortiz as he scrambled back to third. So this got the Red Sox in a great place to win the World Series. And then in game four, they did not allow a run. And the game ended as Edgar Rentaria PERSON,who would become the 2005 Red Sox ORG starting shortstop, hit the ball back to Keith Foke PERSON, who lobbed the ball to Doug Minkowitz PERSON. And the Red Sox had won their first world championship in 86 years. Isn't that crazy? I mean, the Sox held the Cardinals offense, which was the best in the NL in 2004,to only three runs in the last three games, and they never trailed in the series. Mani Ramirez PERSON was named World Series EVENT MVP. The Red Sox won game four of the series on October 27th, 18 years to the day from when they lost to the New York vets in the 1986 World Series.
