Welcome to another edition of Locked-on Pelicans, the Daily podcast, covering your favorite team, the New Orleans Pelicans and NBA, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day, available wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube ORG. I'm your host, Pelicans Insider, credential member of the media, Jake Madison, at Nola Jake ORG on Twitter. Here with you all on this Thursday, and we are going to look at Brandon Ingram in today's show because honestly, I loved a lot of what he said in his end-of-season media availability, but there was one thing that really stuck out to me, and we're going to lead with that in today's show, and that's something they should actually make you worry. But everything else was good. We'll look at that as well in today's episode of Locked-on Pelicans WORK_OF_ART. And of course, thank you for making Locked-on Pelicans your first listen today and every day. We are the number one Pelicans ORG podcast covering everything you want. We are not taking any breaks. We're staying five days a week for this whole off season. There's a lot I want to talk about, a lot to make sense of what this team is going to do because we know David Griffin PERSON said, if you're an everydayer, and every dayers listen Monday through Friday, you know that David Griffin PERSON said big changes are coming. This is not going to be an offseason of complacency, which means we got a lot to talk about because what are they going to do? So we will cover all of that here.So please subscribe wherever you get your podcast and join almost 10,000 Pelicans ORG fans on YouTube and become an everydayer. That means you listen Monday through Friday. So let's get into Brain Ingram PERSON. You know, I'm going to kind of lump two press conferences he had together into one. There was the end of season media availability on Tuesday. And then he also spoke to the media and was very insightful, open and honest in both of these after the Pelicans game four lost the sweep to the Oklahoma City Thunder ORG. But I want to start with something that he had said at the facility on Tuesday. And it was regarding three-point shooting in the need for a point guard. You know, he's asked, you know, during his All-Star year that he took over six threes per game. And that number has been declining ever since. What does he kind of make of that? And he said, well, you know, my first year here, we had Drew Holiday, we had Lonzo Ball PERSON. It was a lot of catch and shoot threes. And now I don't have the opportunity for catch and shoot threes because those guys kind of played a certain way. And maybe we don't have those type of guys on this team anymore. There was a follow-up question of them saying, you know, do you think this team needs a point guard? And he said it couldn't hurt. This is the comment that concerns me. This is the comment that concerns me. And there's a number of reasons for this. I don't think he needs a point guard to take catch and shoot threes. I think he just simply needs to want to do it or to feel more comfortable with it. He's a mid-range guy. That's his shot. That's what he likes. I get it. But this team needs more threes. They need him in particular to take more threes. And that's something that he's just got to embrace rather than seeing these numbers go down every single year. And after that sweep, you know, he went up to the podium and spoke and said, you know, I was bad this year. Maybe it was the injury. I don't want to make excuses. This feels like it's making an excuse for his level of play this year because the three point shooting was doubt. And there'sjust no getting around it. And that's not something that this team, which is building around Zion ORG, that is obvious now, is going to be able to really work with. His year that he won the all-star that he made the all-star game was 6.2-3s per game the next year. 6.1. It was 3.8 this year. That's a significant drop-off. This is a guy who could be taking eight threes per game, making them at a high level. You saw him multiple times make many threes in a game and then not take any next, right? He averaged under three three point attemptsduring this Oklahoma City Thunder ORG series and that's not a good enough number when he was just getting locked up and everything he wanted wasn't good and look I get that he's comfortable with the midrange shot that's just simply not as efficient as what it is and so you look at brainy ingram and this lack of three point shooting among other things is what's led him to having one of his worst seasons as a pro. He said it was the worst he's ever played in a New Orleans Pelicans uniform, 20.8 points per game. Last year, he was at 24.7, the year before that, 22.7, then 23.8 for two years, his first two years in New Orleans GPE. You know, getting to the free throw line, that was down in terms of free throw attempts per game. All of that is hurting this team for a team that struggled on offense and then struggled in the postseason. So he can take more catch and shoot threes. And Shemit Dua PERSON pointed this out on Twitter and you can see it over at NBA.com slash stats. Zion Williamson PERSON had the ninth most three point assists this year. He doesn't need a point guard. He needs to play off of Zion Williamson PERSON better. It's really as simple as that. And he doesneed to understand that. And more of that in the next segment in a good way. Zion was ninth and three point assists this season. Brandon Ingram had 36 assists from Zion Williamson this year on all of his made buckets. Put it in some context here. C.J. McCollum had 65 assists from Zion Williamson this year on all of his made buckets. Put it in some context here. C.J. McCollum had 65 assists from Zion. Trey had 49. Herb Jones had 49. Brain and Ingram PERSON can get the ball from Zion on the three point line and take open threes. He just has to want to do that. The person to create that is here. It's Zion Williamson. One of the things, if you'rean everyday air, we talked a lot about in this playoff series was drawing two to the ball. And that means someone's open, right? If you draw a double team, someone is open. And so all you have to do is move the ball around until there's a wide open look. You will get that. He's got to embrace that. Zion draws two. He draws three. If you go look at a lot of Brandon Ingham shot attempts this year, he caught the ball on the three point line, on the move maybe, and then dribbled into a mid-range jumper that at that point you're going towards a defender, right? You catch the ball in the three-point line, you're wide open, and then you take steps towards the basket, but not driving, just a couple steps towards the basket. That's where defenders are. They didn't stick their arms up and now this is a contested mid-range jumper instead of an open catch-and-shoot three-point look. That's got to be something that improves. He's capable of doing this. He's played this way. But this year, Brandon Ingram PERSON took the fewest catch-and-shoot threes of his career. If you look at the percentage of threes that were assisted versus not,78% of his three-point makes were assisted this year. That's the lowest of his career. That's 22 then that were kind of create your own threes, which is a good thing too. But that number is low because of his style of play, not because of a lack of point guard. That's something that he needs to realize. And if he does that, it takes more catch and shoot opportunities. They're right there. You can look up all of his shots on NBA.com ORG slash stats and you can see it. Just dribbles into a contested mid-range shot instead of or passes out of a three-point look or gets away from that. Those are there for him. Zion Williamson PERSON creates that.Otherwise, you would see Zion having way more assists for Brandon Ingram PERSON. That number being that low is a little bit shocking and it's it. That's a B.I thing. Not a needing a point guard thing. Point guard wouldn't hurt. Don't get me wrong. But he doesn't need a point guard to shoot more threes. You have Zion ORG. The looks are there. That's, this was the only thing in his end of season availability that made me go, wait, what? That kind of says like, do you get it? Or do you just not? And that's what kind of concerns me. But everything else was good. And he also had a couple of comments that make you think he will figure this out. I want to look at those coming up here next in today's episode of Locked On Pelicans. And thank you for making Locked-on Pelicans your first listen today and every day. We're here Monday through Friday, the number one Pelicans ORG podcast. No one else comes to you like this, giving you the insight you want about this team, what they're going to do this offseason, what they're going to be looking at. We're going to look at trade targets. We're going to look at all of this, right? Willie Green PERSON is coming back. We'll look at how he can improve. It's not just him being bad. There are things he can do, and we're going to look at all of that here.Because honestly, hearing these guys talk at the end of the season, it gave me a lot of optimism. The season ended with very much a whimper, right? On a down note. But something's there that they get it. They get the urgency and that's all we're looking for right now. That's all we can look for, right? There can't be changes happening immediately. It's at least they kind of know they got to do something. And that at least is a good thing, even if maybe we wish they would have done it earlier, but that's in the past and you can't change it. So we're looking at Brandon Ingram PERSON today and kind of his end of season media availability, which overall, again, I thought was very insightful, very honest from him too. And I really just appreciate that level of insight that he gave everybody with all of this.I do worry about him maybe not fully getting it right now, right now being the key for that. You look at brain and agreement, I said he's got to take more threes. We said this all year long. It's the shot selection and kind of fitting in around Zion ORG. And I'm not sure that he truly understands that. But I also do think he knows things need to change. And while maybe he doesn't know what needs to change, I think he can figure it out. And I think that's the key. He knows that he needs to change too. He openly said this was his worst season. He said this was the worst season he's had in a New Orleans Pelicans ORG uniform. And he is correct. And he said it goes back to Team USA ORG, acknowledging that when he was on Team USA, he did not play well at all. Just didn't fit, right? And then at times really didn't fit here in New Orleans this year around Zion Williamson PERSON. And we'll get into their offense next week. I really want to look at that because I think that's going to be really interesting. And Brandon Ingram's role in that, Zion ORG's role in that. Can you actually build an offense around Zion is somewhat of a question and I'll explain why in next week's show. With Ingram PERSON, I think he understands kind of his own fault in a lot of this. You know, I've talked about it. They put in that Borrego offense and Ingram PERSON just didn't really fit in or want to do that, right? You've got to take threes in that offense and that's not something that he did.It really comes down to a lot of that. That would have made things work. One more win and maybe you have a different end to the regular season or a different end to the postseason here. So he openly admitted this was his worst season and it said it motivates him that he's going to take a little bit of time, get his mental right, and then start looking at where he needs to improve, knowing that he's got to be better. He said it's on him and the team to go out and prove to the fansto believe in the pelicans NORP again. He understands the outrage from the fans, knows people are upset, knows that this isn't the season that any of y'all wanted. So he's going to go out this offseason and put in the work to come back, be better, and knows that it's not just words. He's got to do it with actions, right? Play better on the court. And if he does that, he'll win everybody back and we're all, you know, we're all happy again. That's the right attitude for him to take. It truly is. That's what you want to hear him say. Now, we just have to wait and see if it ends up being that way. And there's a risk in it. And we'll talk about that risk in the next segment here. But he's saying the right things with that. One of the things he also said, and this I thought was a very interesting thing. Said communication between him, Zion and CJ PERSON needs to be there because they want to figure things out. So let's do that. But it's got to be communication. You know the communication, you being y'all, know the communication is going to be there from CJ PERSON, right? He got Zion ORG back. We know CJ PERSON's going to do the communication. And this isn't just on Brandon Ingram PERSON to have more communication or if they need more, right? This is on Zion Williamson PERSON too.And I think this is Ingram PERSON kind of putting that out there a little bit. Past few years, Zion's tended to work out in the offseason kind of away from others. While it was at the team facility this past year, you know, not everyone was. And while they have done some group workouts, you know, mini training camps before training camp, you know, together before. Zion ORG hasn't really participated in that.Part of that is the broken foot year DATE. But last year he didn't really do that either. The year before that, he didn't do that either. That's not what you want from him. If everyone needs to get on the same page, if Ingram and Zaya need to figure out how to play together, spend that time working on it in the off season. That's where you can build a lot of that. And so I think Ingram PERSON saying, you know, there's got to be communication is, I want to do that, right? We knew he tried to go to the finals with Zion ORG Williamson one year and Zion kind of ghosted on him. So this isn't only on Ingram, right? This is on Zion ORG too wanting to be willing to do the work. And he hasn't in the past. We're now maybe seeing kind of Zion 3.0, and maybe he is. But I think this was Ingram PERSON's kind of plea for that sort of thing of like, help me help you.So while I said in the beginning of this segment, you know, I don't know if, while Ingram PERSON understands that things need to change and maybe he doesn't know what needs to change yet. He's willing to change. That's the most important thing. And that was one of my biggest takeaways from this. I think he doesn't know what it is yet. And I think it'll hopefully he will figure it out. It's the three-point shooting. It's the shot selection. It's that kind of stuff. Being more of a secondary guy to Zion Williamson PERSON, which is not an easy thing necessarily to accept. But if he's willing to do that, they can come back and this team can be significantly better. If he won't, if you can't, yeah, you've got to trade him. But if he's willing to kind of do that work and those things, that's where there's an opportunityto really take a giant step forward, along with a center that makes more sense. Other shooting on the team, a point guard for when he needs that, right? I've said this, so let's go back to the point guard thing. That's a good transition to this, right? When he's out there with Zion ORG, shoot, catch, and shoot threes off of Zion ORG. Simple as that. Really as simple as that. But there's going to be times when Ingram's on the court without Zion ORG.Get him a point guard. That's why I've said I want a point guard off the bench, not in the starting lineup. Zion ORG can do this. The assist numbers, 65 to CJ, 50 to Trey, 50 to Herb, 36 to Brandon Ingram PERSON. That's an Ingram PERSON thing. Zion ORG is dishing the ball out.If he needs that, make sure he's bought into Zion ORG doing it and get him a point guard when he needs someone else for it. When Zion ORG and him aren't on the court together. Because look, CJ PERSON's not that point guard. So I think there's a lot of room for hope and optimism with this and seeing what these guys are sayingand kind of seeing their thought process play out almost in real time, it feels like. This team has the potential. There's talent here. You know, again, with them fitting Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson PERSON, I have long said, I thought they fit. I literally did a show every single year on this of no, they fit. It's like, it's time for the annual show that these two fit. Because Brandon Ingham PERSON is such a talented shot maker that he can do this. This year was weird, though. This year was weird with him not truly wanting to fit in for whatever reason. And part of it was they told him a different role to begin the year, but it involved him shooting more threes. He stopped doing that. Then they shifted to point Zion ORG. And there's a difference to doing that in the beginning of the yearversus the middle of the year. And more on the offense on Monday show, because I have a lot I want to say about that that I think is going to be really insightful for y'all. So they can fit, but it's on Ingram PERSON to really make it work, and Zion ORG to communicate with him too.I think those are the two real big things here. That's what I kind of want you to take away from this segment. So coming up, though, can the Pelicans ORG risk this? This is tough for the team to really try and figure out, can you risk this? That's coming up here next in today's episode of Locked-on Pelicans.Right now, though, I'm excited to keep talking about Monopoly Go PRODUCT. And of course, subscribe to Lockdown Pelicans. We're the number one Pelicans podcast. So there you go. So let's keep talking about Brain and Ingram PERSON. We're going to talk more about him tomorrow to tease ahead to tomorrow's show. I want to talk about his trade value because the contract stuff with that is reallyimportant, really important for whether he could be moved or not this off season. So we're going to look at that and I'll kind of like wrap up Brain and Ingram week here with everything. And then we'll shift into like the offense and looking, kind of doing a bit of a deep brief on the Pelican season with a number of different areas next week for everything here. So tomorrow the Branden-Igrim ORG kind of trade value show. We'll also look at like the future extension and contract what he could get.All of that. I have the numbers for you and everything. So we went over. I'm worried that he doesn't get it right now. And that's okay because there's time for him to figure it out. And it seems like he wants to figure it out. That's an important thing. But can the Pelicans ORG risk this? And this is kind of the big question. And there's some opportunity cost involved in this too. This is tough for New Orleans GPE. There's lots of reasons for optimism, from Brandon Ingram, from Zion ORG, from them fitting together and B.I. figuring it out. But can they risk it? Can you bring back the big three of Zion ORG, Brandon Ingram, and C.J. McCollum PERSON,and just hope for the best. Can you risk Ingram PERSON not figuring it out or reverting to a different style of play, right? That three-point numbers have gone down. He might say, I'm going to shoot more threes this year. I promise I'll be good. And then not do it. And then what? And then what? There are guys you could trade him for right now that maybe fit better. Right? We'll look atTray Young in the offseason. We'll look at Carl Anthony Towns, Deontay Murray PERSON, and others. There's a lot more than you realize, I think. So we'll look at all of those names here on Locked-on Pelicans ORG. And are they going to be available later? That's the question, right? If Ingram comes in, doesn't shoot threes and go, oh, well, this doesn't work. Maybe Tray Young PERSON's been traded by then and you can't go and get him when maybe that's the best move. That's the opportunity cost here of do you just have to do it now becauseyou don't know if you're going to have that option later. And that's a very realistic possibility. And that's where David Griffin PERSON in the front office has a challenge ahead of them. That's kind of their task to figure out what do you do here when it comes to that. And so that's easier said than done. And that's the front office discussions. And some of the things we'll talk about here on lockdown pelicans may help you inform your own decision on that. You know, based off what I've said, let me know what you think in the comments down below. Do you think Ingram PERSON is going to change? Do you think there'll be, it's worth bringing him back because he said all the right things and you believe in him? Or is the risk? Just no, you've got to move him because you can get someone now. You know, you could probably trade Ingramman picks for Tray Young PERSON. Like, I think you could get a deal done like that. We'll look at that. There's cons to Tray Young PERSON too. But is it just maybe make that move? Is there a better fit there? That's an important thing to look at with it all. Trey Young PERSON then say you don't do that. He gets traded elsewhere. You can't get him anymore. If that's the guy, you know, this is what I think it comes down to Griffin PERSON needing to do isidentify the course of action. I think they know the direction they need to go in. It's like, we need to go over here. Okay. How do we get there? Right? What do we need to do? You know the direction you need to go. Now plot your route to get there. right? What do we need to do? You know the direction you need to go. Now plot your route to get there. The plotting the route is the trades, the free agents, coaching changes, whatever it might be. And we'll look at coaching too, by the way. We'll do a show on if the Pelicans were to fire Willie Green PERSON, here's why. They're not going to, but here's why you would do it. And here's what it would mean for the team going forward, too. You know, and Ingram PERSON said he needs to help the coaches. I mean, because he didn't this year with what he wanted to do. He did not help the coaches. He realizes that, particularly with how the season ended. That in and of itself, I truly think, is a good thing. Can the pelicans risk that, though? I'm asking you, right? Let me know in the comments down below. I'm not sure where I follow on that just yet. I think they maybe shouldn't. I think there's a betterfit with Zion Williamson PERSON out there. And, you know, I think a lot of us are very convinced that they should build around Zion ORG and that's, you know, this is the way. But I also don't know if you should actually trade brain and ingram because I don't know if his values where you really think it might be. We're going to look at that in tomorrow's episode of Locked-on Pelicans ORG where we really examine the trade value for him. And his contract in that situation is a really big factor in all of that.So this is where it's tough, right? Look, we all said we could run a team. Run a team's hard, y'all. Now, they get paid for it to be hard, certainly. You know, that's what's what the money's for. It's not an easy job, but you're paid well to try and do it.And at this point, does this team need to be aggressive or be conservative? You know, Griffin PERSON kind of hinted at aggressive. We'll see. This is, this is what's going to, you know, not make or break this Pelicans ORG offseason because I think there is a lot of reasons to be optimistic going into next year. But they do need things to change. Now, is that roster? Yeah, but it's also players and their play style. It's, you know, when, when Griffin PERSON said we need to be better, this can't be complacency. Yeah, maybe a player needs to change dramatically how they play. That's not complacency. Playing exactly the same way would be complacency, but you're not. And I think that can open things up and that could be the biggest change that this team needs. Let me know what you think in the comments down below on YouTube ORG. Do you agree? Do you disagree?Or are you just like, trade Ingram PERSON? Or do you now want to bring him back based on his end of season media availability? Because I do think he was very insightful. And a lot of what he said makes you go, yeah, this is one, he comes off as such a good dude. Such a good dude to be perfectly honest with y'all. That level of insight, the way he gave really thoughtfulanswers, you just got to like the guy. But liking a guy's not enough. You got to win basketball games and you got to play well. Let me know what you think in the comments down below. So that's going to do it for this episode of Locked on Pelicans. Enjoy Jazz Fest Rolling Stones today. I will be out there for that and we'll have another episode of Locked on Pelicans for you tomorrow looking at Brain and Ingram PERSON's trade value and how the contract plays into it because it's a really big deal. So as always, I'm your host, Jake PERSON Madison, at Nola, Jake, on Twitter. This is Locked On Pelicans, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day,the number one Pelicans podcast. I appreciate y'all listening and I will be back with y'all tomorrow.
