Thank you for making Locked On Match your That's part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. Thank you for making Locked-on-Mets your first listen every day. Locked-on Mets is free and available on all platforms, including YouTube ORG.On the show today, an offensive outburst to discuss in the first segment. Then in the second segment, I want to talk about Wednesday's game and why I don't love the Mets ORG' chances. I'm going to go through that because this pitching staff is just taxed right now. So we'll also talk a little bit about some injuries that haven't been discussed on the show yet. Who's coming back? Roster management, a lot there. Then in the final segment, we're going to look at Harrison Bader PERSON's recent comments of the media about his playing time. Before we get to any of that, though, I'm your host Ryan Fickleston PERSON. If you want to find any of my work, follow me on X at Fickleston ORG. Ryan PERSON. You can also find some of my writing at just baseball.com where I work as the managing editor. Well, I think I should start to criticize the Mets ORG hitters a little more often.Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonzo, they both got their own podcast this week where I ripped them, where I said these guys got to be better. And sure enough, they were better. So let's just rattle off a couple more grievances we can file here. Joey Wendell PERSON's horrible. Harrison Bader hasn't hit in the minute.Tyrone Taylor PERSON, you're not good. Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nemo PERSON, do better. I'm just trying to throw some reverse jinxing out there because, man, when I talk down a guy, like I did earlier in the season with DJ Stewart PERSON, they're due to bounce back in a big way. And I am for it. Make me look silly. If it means the Mets ORG win baseball games, I am on board. And really, this game comes down to a fifth inning where the Mets piled up six runs. That was the difference in the game. We talked about what happened before, what happened after, but that was the rally that gave the Mets ORG this victory. And it was so welcome to see. I feel like it's been a minute since we've seen that type of a collective barrage. And it was, you know, from the bottom of the lineup all the way through the top. And they hit around the entire lineup. You had Jeff McNeil and Tomasito lead things off in that fifth inning with base hits. The Mets were trailing three to nothing at that point as Jose Budo had a brutal first inning, gave up a lead off Homer PERSON, walked a batterer, gives up a double. So he's sitting there with one run already in, second and third, nobody out, gives up a sack, fly eventually gets out of the end, but not before he gives up an RBI single. So three nothing Cardinals in the first. He ends up having some trouble in the second inning as well, giving up the first two base runners. But he settled in nicely after that, kept the Cardinals off of the board beyond that first inning, got through five, and gets a win thanks to this rally by the Mets in the 6th. So with two runners on, Brandon Nemo comes up and once again has a huge home run, his fifth of the year. And again, it was just perfect. I talked about this on yesterday's show.Nemo PERSON's perfect, perfect home run. If you play MLB ORG the show, you know what I'm talking about. It's where you time the ball up perfectly when it comes to when it comes across the zone and you hit it right on that sweet spot of the barrel for Nimmo PERSON, ball that travels, 440 feet dead setter, 108 off the bat, launch angle of 27 degrees. You just can't hit a baseball better. And it's great to see him really get back into that power. If Nemo starts to pop home runs again, he can be a 30 home run guy. I really believe it. And it's going to make this lineup so much better. So Nimmo PERSON takes the pressure off everybody, ties up the ball game, Starly Marte PERSON doubles.Francisco Indoor PERSON gets a base hit. And Marte just ends up on third base after that hit, which put two runners on for Pete Alonzo PERSON. And Alonzo PERSON finally came through. RBI double drives them both in. DJ Stewart advanced Alonzo PERSON with the ground out.And then J.D. Martinez comes through with a base hit to bring home Pete PERSON. And the Mets had their six-run rally off of seven hits. And actually, Jeff McKeon added an eighth one, if I'm not mistaken. They count all those right. You had one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Yes, eight hits in the inning. The last one didn't really contribute to the rally. But McNeil getting two hits in the same inning and started the game three for three. So when I do a podcast and I rip a player and say they got to do better, why aren't they hitting? They just are bound to start hitting. Pete Alonzo, Jeff McNeil, I was two for two this week on ripping a player and all of a sudden they come through in a big way. So it's good to see those guys have a solid offensive game. But it was not easy for themess to get the victory. Despite the six run inning, the rest of that game, it was tough because this bullpen is worn out. This is the 12th game and 12 days. They got one more left before they finally, mercifully get it off day. And it was Cole Solcer first who came out of the pen. He gave up a solo shot and, uh, ended up striking at three around it, but did give up a run. Sean Reed Foley had a rough night, got a ground up and then gave up a hit and a walk. And Carlos Mendoza PERSON had a quick hook on him. They went to Jorge Lopez PERSON. Lopez gave up a hit that loaded the bases, but got a pop out off the bat of Nolan and Aranato PERSON, which was huge. And then easy out, Paul Goldschmidt PERSON, who was just brutal. He struck out there in that big spot with the bass is juiced. So that was a huge side of relief. The a thing came around, Reed Garrett, worked around a lead off single. There was a brutal play by Pete Alonzo PERSON where you're sitting there with one out already. Ground ball hit to him. He was able to get the lead runner at second, but that ball came so close to hitting. I think it was Alex Burleson on the back, and that would have put two runners on. You'd be one out shy. And the way this bullpins taxed, every out is so valuable because all these pitchers only have so many bullets in their arm. For Garrett, luckily he got that second out there, ends up striking out the next batter, two strikeouts in the inning. And that last one that ended things, it was a dotted backdoor slider. When I say dotted, I'm talking about the absolute corner low and away that was able to get the called third strike.Huge moment for Garrett PERSON. And then we saw the Mets add one more run in the top of the ninth because Pete Alonzo PERSON coming alive facing off against, I can't remember the pitcher's name, but they were talking all about great story, kid making his debut, was never drafted, pitch an indie ball, here he is, strikes at Francisco Indoor PERSON to start things off when it comes to his big league career. And then Pete Alonzo PERSON gives him his welcome to the big league's moment by hitting abomb of a home run on a slider that just didn't get enough low and away. It was in that zone low in a way, but didn't get out of the zone as the catcher was set up for. And Alonzo PERSON all over it. Crushes it. And that was a much needed insurance run because Adam Ottivino PERSON, he bent but did not break. Is that how you say it properly? That's a tough expression for me. He bends but doesn't break. It was a rough inning for out of in. He also gave up a home run. This one, a large noobar with one out. Then he gives up a single and then he walks Nolan and Aronado PERSON. So now he got both of the tying runners on base. Luckily, Paul Colchman PERSON comes up.And I hope that this malaise can continue for at least one more game because man he just he looks washed he looks completely cooked I would not count out Paul Goldschmidt to somehow return to form and have a good season but who I'll tell you one thing if the Mets don't resign Alonzo, Mark Viantos can start it for first base. Please don't go into the market and sign this guy because I just think that his next couple years might not be pretty. He struck out on a pitch from Adamadovino PERSON. That was a brutal pitch. I mean, unless that's what he was trying to do. But that ball was in the other's batters box and probably on the outside of the other's batters box. It was like six feet off the plate. And for whatever reason, I guess Goldschmidt PERSON was just green light swinging no matter what.He swings through it. And that was huge for the Mets ORG. And then he was able to get another big strikeout out of Vino was and ultimately gets his first save of the season. The Mets moved back to 500. They get back into the wind column when it comes to a series. And now the hope is you can complete a sweepbecause you're about to head home to face the Braves and the Phillies ORG. And that might be a really rough stretch for the Mets ORG. So you want to pile wins as much as you can against a Cardinals ORG team that is down bad. Also now losing Wilson Contreras PERSON because of just ugly play with J.D. Martinez hitting his arm today. So this is a chance to capitalize on a Cardinals ORG team that's not playing good baseball. But with that said, I think the odds are actually stackedagainst the Mets in this final game. So I want to talk about why in just a minute. This is what we do.Katana PERSON's going to get rock. Jeff McNeil, Pinalanza, Francisco Lendora, Brandon PERSON M.O., none of them can hit. Let's go. Let's jinx them into it. But for real, baby. This is what we do. Kentano's going to get rock. Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonza, Francisco Lundora, Brandon, M.O. None of them can hit. Let's go. Let's chinks them into it. But for real, though, I wouldn't place my money on the Mets winning because Sonny Gray PERSON is on the mound for the Cardinals. And he has been great to start the season. And this bullpen is taxed.Jose Cantana is going to make the start last time out. Did he make it three innings? I don't even think he did. I think he pitched in the third and then got pulled with two outs. Hopefully it's more of the eight-ending one run allowed against the Cardinals that we saw two starts ago. And this matchup does favor him. That's who he did it against. But you look at what's behind Jose Cantana PERSON in this one. Adam Antivino PERSON is going to be burned. Okay. He's just not going to pitch. Reed Garrett just pitched for the third time in the last four days. The first of those outings was a five pitch outing, but I just doubt it. I doubt they're going to go back to him again. You don't want to burn these guys out. So I think Adavino Garrett PERSON not available. Jorge Lopez has pitched every other day lately. Could he go two days in a row? You'd hope so, but I wouldn't count on it. Jake Dekeman and Edwin-Diaz, they each got a day.So they should be available, particularly with the off day following. And I think Edwin probably will be, but that would be pitching three days and four nights for each of them. So it's something that you typically want to avoid, especially this early in the season. Like I said, I think if it's a safe situation, Diaz PERSON will be used, but I wouldn't be surprised that Deekman PERSON's not used either. So now you've already cleared Adavino, Garrett, Lopez, Deekman PERSON potentially. It's half your bullpen. Sean Rie Foley, on the exact same schedule as Adamadovino. He's pitched during the last four days. So I don't think he'll go. So who will be available? Cole Solcer pitched tonight. So if he remains on the roster, I bet he's available. The curious thing is the Mets actually made a claim a couple days ago and they got Johann Ramirez PERSON back off of waivers. Now, to bring Ramirez back on the 40 PRODUCT, they had to DFA somebody. So they dFAed Max Kranick PERSON. Kranick PERSON was rehabbing off Tommy John surgery. Washington ORG off Tommy John surgery. That's not quite an accurate depiction. He is coming off T.J., but the reason why he didn't start the season healthy is he had a hamstring pole in spring training. He had gone through his injury assignment. He did have an option left, so he got optioned to AAA ORG. Now they DFA him, which could be interesting because we'll see if Kranic PERSON passes through waiversthat can stay into the org. But also, that all happened on the 6th and Johann Ramirez was not added on the 7th. So I wonder if there's some grace period I'm not aware of where you have 24 hours to officially add a player to the active roster. And maybe the Mets ORG were taking this opportunity to manipulate some rules, right? Maybe they knew Kranick PERSON was going to be a guy that would have to get off the roster whenyou needed Kodi-Sanga and David Peterson added back off the 60-day IL ORG. So a little creative bookkeeping here. Yeah, Johan Ramirez PERSON, so you'd have him for the final game of this series. And then you could potentially DFA them whenever you need Tyler or McGill PERSON. And you insert him back into what could be a six-man rotation. So it's interesting how the Mets ORG have maneuvered things.I don't know what's going to happen there. I would assume Johan Ramirez has to be added, which would mean that Cole Solcer PERSON likely would be the guy that gets sent down because he still has options. You could also get rid of Sean Reed Foley, but he's pitched pretty well and you'd have to DFA him. So if I had to guess, Yohan Ramirez PERSON is in the bullpen as a long man, but you'll also have Adrian Houser PERSON.Adrian Houser could have started this game if you wanted to go to a six-man rotation. So I bet the plan is go to Jose Kintana to start and have Houser PERSON piggyback. If Ketana goes five, I would not be surprised at all if we see Hauser in the sixth inning. And if it goes well, maybe he gets it through the sixth, the seventh, potentially the eighth.I don't know. I think the Mets would love to get length out of Houser PERSON and the lineup can help them. The problem, you're going up against Sunny Gray. So if that's the roadmap, if Carl's Mendoza PERSON is looking at his blueprint and it's Jose Katana to start, Adrian Houser to piggyback with Johann Ramirez as the next guy, and then hopefully you have Edwin Diaz to close things out, it could be a rough situation for this Mets ORG team. I'll also note thatthis being a series they already won might be sort of a punt game. You hope you get a good start. You hope your lineup scores runs. But overall, protecting the health of your bullpen, the ability to give all of those guys two days before you face the Braves ORG. I could even see them prioritizing that with Edwin Diaz PERSON. It might just be Katana Hauser PERSON and that's sort of it.I mean, I could see them going that route. So we'll see. You want to stack victories. If you're in position to win, I say go out and try to grab it. But this team is gassed right now. And I think that's important to know. Also, I mentioned Tyler McGill PERSON coming back into the fray. He had a rehab start today in triple I, Syracuse GPE. By the way, I think they scored like, was it 14 runs in the seventh inning or something nuts in that game? And then I think in low-way, St. Lucy, they piled on runs as well.So good day for offense in the Mets ORG organization. But McGill PERSON, in his rehab start, went four scoreless, did not allow a hit, walked just one, struck out seven, got out to 62 pitches.I think he's probably good to go. And if I had to guess, just looking at the road ahead, and we will probably talk about this more on Friday show. How can the mats navigate this season with a six-man rotation? How can they use their rotation depth in the bullpen to help them in that regard? So that would be a fun show to kind of break down the options. But for this upcoming stretch, another 13-game 13-day stretch, I believe you are going to see Christian Scott, first game against the Braves ORG.He is due up next in the rotation. So that's going to be pretty exciting. Luis Severino, Sean Minia PERSON. That's my assumption is what the Mets will do for the rotation against the Braves ORG. Then the Phillies ORG come in. It would either be Jose Budo or Tyler or McGill PERSON.I'd imagine Budo PERSON to maybe extend the time where you can have another reliever in the bullpen. And then you go to McGill and then Kintana PERSON and then back around. I think that's the way the rotation is going to line up. So Scott, Sevi, Manaya, Budo, McGill, Kintana PERSON. That puts two righties in between each of the lefties. So in a three game set, if this continues for the rest of the month, you never would have Manaya and Katana PERSON starting in the same series. That's how I think they'll line it up. And what that would need is over this next 13 game stretch, three of those games will be started by Christian Scott PERSON, two by each of the other five pitchers. So it'll be interesting to see how they maneuver it.Managing a bullpen with six starters is tough. Houser providing length out of the bullpen will be huge. So we'll see him get his first crack at it, I believe, on Wednesday. And we'll go from there. Also a note here when it comes to pitching and this team may be being a little bit gas on a lot of fronts.Brooks Raley, he could be heading to the 60-day aisle. We don't know yet, but I should have mentioned this on an earlier show, figured it'd be a good time to finally get it in here. They have reported that there's some concerns with his MRI. The first one was encouraging, but then when he was still struggling to bounce back, they got another one. And there's some fraying on the ligament. They're not sure if he's going to need surgery. What he's going to do? He's 37 years old in a contract year. So he's got to make some choices for his career. We'll see what happens here with Brooks Raley. but it's a rough loss because he was great for the Mets ORG this season and seven outings to not allow a run. So we'll see. Without him, you're left with just Jake Deekman PERSON in that bullpen. That's why I actually think David Peterson PERSON could be a real weapon out of the pen for the Mets ORG as a left-handed pitcher. Again, we'll talk about that at a later date. But you look at this roster trying to maneuver spots. That's why I think Johann Ramirez is probably somewhat of a placeholder for the next week here until McGill PERSON gets added in. Then you clear them off the 40 gives you an open spot for whoever comes first, Peterson or Senga on the 27th.In case, who knows, they might both be available, in which case you'd have to make another move. And that could be moving really to the 60-day I-L. All right, I think that covers everything on the pitching front, but there's still some more to discuss when it comes to the position players because Harrison Bader PERSON is griping about playing time in the media. We'll talk about that story to close off the show.First, though, today's episode is brought to you by Prize Picks ORG. So if you want to be a locked on Mets ORG insider, to be part of the giveaway. There's a two-week free trial, I believe. You can find a link in the episode description. We go to subtext.com slash locked-on Mets ORG.Now, let's talk about the news on Harrison Bader who complained to Mike Puma PERSON on the New York Post abouthis playing time. Harrison Bader PERSON is probably looking at his numbers saying, man, I'm hitting over 300 of the pastweek. I'm hitting 280 on the year. I got speed. I bring defense. Why am I notthe everyday starting center fielder for the New York Mets? When you compare my career to DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor's PERSON, why are these guys playing over me? But to say that, and he didn't say it as many words, and I will say if you read the quotes, they aren't horrible. He says that he's frustrated. Let me actually pull up the article, so I'm notmisrepresenting Harrison Bader. Again, it was written by Mike Puma in the New York Post ORG. And let's find it here so I can read the exact quote. Because he's bothered by reduced role with the Mets ORG. So let's pull up some of the quotes here. He said, quote, I don't handle it well. I can tell you that. But I certainly don't let it affect the way that I prepare the way that I keep focused when I do get an opportunity to go in there and play. Even it's later in the game. If anything, it lights more of a fire under my ass. I'm bothered by it for sure. But I respect what they view as giving us an opportunity to win at the same time, whether my name is in there or not. I prepare every single day of the season DATE. So if you really look at the same time, whether my name is in there or not, I prepare every single day of the season. So if you really look at the full picture, it's not as bad of a quote as it seems on the surface. How Mike Puma PERSON got the story, though, is what's interested in me. Was this just before the game on Tuesday night,Puma's in the locker room, and he gets a moment with Bader PERSON and he asks him, you know, two nights in a row, you're on the starting lineup, how do you feel about it? And he kind of goes off. That's what I would imagine happened.I don't think that Harrison Bader is seeking Mike Puma PERSON to air his grievance. And then I believe I heard Puma PERSON in the scrum, if you even call it a scrum when they're on the road, of cause Mendoza PERSON asking him about the question. I mean, the story got published at 746. So how it comes together is important. That's what I would imagine happened. And Mendoza PERSON basically said, which I think is also cool in the article. So let me actually see if I can find what Mendoza PERSON said about it. He said it's certainly a challenge. This is Bady PERSON. Certainly a challenge, not what I expected, but that is what life is about. But adjustability is availability. That is what I was always taught. So I'm just staying in the pocket waiting for any given opportunity to do something good for my teammate. So again, ultimately, the quotes aren't horrible. But it was a little surprising to see it. And here's what Mendoza said later in the piece. It said, Bader PERSON was a little surprising to see it. And here's what Mendoza PERSON said later in the piece. It said, Bader PERSON's a huge part of this team as the center fielder, but you can make a case for a lot of those guys, Taylor and trying to get Stewart PERSON in there. So it's more matchup related. That's where we're at.We've still got a long way to go. That's some conversations I'm having with them. I know they're not happy about it because they all want to play. It's not that Bader PERSON is doing anything. You can make kids for all three of them. It's good to have that healthy competition because at the end of the day,I'm using all 26 guys on the roster. So I will say that moving forward, it's going to be an interesting thing to follow. Harrison Bader PERSON wants to be in there and defensively, he's the best fit. If you look at the playing time split over the last week here, Bader's gotten 19 playedappearances, DJ Stewart has gotten 16, Taylor's got Nate PERSON. So he's gotten the most playing time out of those three. He is hitting pretty well. Meanwhile, you got J.D. Martinez, who's gotten 24 plate appearances, and those were previously split up by those three guys. So instead of having 19 played appearances, Harrison Bader PERSON would have probably had,no, 27, and DJ Stewart would have had 24, and Tyrone would have had 16, and they all were getting work. Now you got a guy clogging up the DH spot. It just, it makes you have to make some tough decisions. And I personally have liked the lineup with DJ Stewart PERSON in it because he has given you really strong at bats. With that said, you look at the season numbers altogether. Yeah, DJ Stewart is getting on base at a 365 clip. Harrison Bader PERSON is hitting far better when it comes to his average. Harrison Bader PERSON has scored more runs. DJ Stewart PERSON has driven in more runs in a smaller sample size of that bats. So it is going to be matchup based, but it feels like these two are the guys that are gettingthe run. So the funny part of this story to me is the guy that should be complaining to my Puma is Tyrone Taylor PERSON. But I think Tyrone Taylor is not a position to make complaints, right? He's just hitting arm now. Still got a couple years away from free agency. Harrison Bader's on a one-year free agent deal. So he's maybe a little more open and free to speak his mind. Ultimately, all these guys are going to contribute, but it is interesting to see how the Mets ORG go with this. You got a tough right-handed pitcher on the mound in Sunny Gray. Who's going to get that start? I would imagine they'll get Harrison Bader PERSON in there because he's got that, you know, contract, that seniority. You would think that they would maybe give him one start in this series and Tyrone Taylor PERSON won't get any. But Taylor has hit right-handed pitching better than Bader PERSON.So I don't know. And you still have DJ Stewart PERSON. They could start Stewart PERSON and left. What is interesting as well is they're short of pitching better than Bader. So I don't know. And you still have D.J. Stewart. They could start Stewart and left. What is interesting as well is they're sort of playing Stewart half the game. They're trying to get him three at bat. And they're going to Harrison Bader for the other half for defense.Bader still got two at bats in this one. So again, Tyrone Taylor PERSON is really the odd man out in this situation. But Bader wants to be in there every day. And I do wonder how a DJ Stewart reads that story. How does that come across? They come across bad. Does it not come across bad? I don't know. I don't think the quotes were horrible, but if you're saying that you should be in the lineup, it means somebody should. And that somebody, at least the last couple days, has been DJ Stewart PERSON.Again, moving forward, I think it is probably a split between those two guys until Stewart PERSON cools off, but the abats that he's giving you, the, you know, drawing walks potentially in front of J.D. Martinez PERSON now, the way they've been lining it up, having DJ Stewart as the lefty in between Alonzo and Martinez PERSON. That might just be the lineup for the time being. And I think it's a pretty good lineup. I've produced a lot of runs today. Anyway, that's going to be all for today's edition of Locked on Mets.Tomorrow Show will break down this game, whatever happens with Kintama PERSON on the Hill.
