Thank you for making Locked-Oad Mets your first listen every day. Lock-on Mets is free and available on all platforms, including YouTube ORG. Well, throughout the show today, we got a lot of pitching to discuss. In the first segment, we'll talk about Adrian Houser's PERSON move to the bullpen, what the match's rotation will look like over the next couple of weeks here. Then in the second segment, we'll do a little bit of a game recap. Jose Cantana did not pitch well, but Brett Beatty PERSON swung the bat well, so we'll go through everything that happened on Friday night. Then in the final segment, a little delayed Friday from report belated, I guess, here, on a Saturday.I'm going to talk about all the top pitching prospects in the Mets ORG system, give you some updates there. Before we get to any of that, though, I'm your host Ryan Finkleston PERSON. If you want to find any of my work, follow me on X at Finkelstein, Ryan PERSON. You can also find somebody writing at just baseball.com where I work as the managing editor. The Mets ORG are turning over a new leaf with their starting rotation.Christian Scott will make his MLB debut later tonight. According to Carlos Mendoza PERSON, Adrian Houser is moving to the bullpen. He told the media this prior to the game on Friday, that Houser PERSON is taking to the news well. He just has to figure some things out. They're hoping that he can eventually get back to being the pitcher he has been in the past. But this is a guy that has had success in the bullpen in his career. And maybe this is the change that he needs to rediscover himself. If look at the past, but this is a guy that has had success in the bullpen in his career, and maybethis is the change that he needs to rediscover himself. If look at the numbers, Adrian Howser has a 176 ERA as a relief pitcher in his career, a 451 ERA as a starter. But if you dig a little bit deeper, as much as it's been portrayed as Hauser PERSON having spent time as a swing man in the past, and I've even been a little bit negligent saying that because, again, there has been stretches where he's been in the bullpen. Most of those stretches came early in his career. Since 2020, he's basically been a starting pitcher with the occasional relief appearance. So if you look at how all of those innings came together, his first couple of inings out of the bullpen came in 2015. And this is three years prior to him actually getting a real run in the big leagues. He had two scoreless innings, I guess it's a September call up in 2015.They didn't pitch again in the big leagues until 2018. That year, it was 13 and two third innings pitched out of the bullpen. Five earned runs. That's a 3-2-9 ERA. 2019, it was split pretty much down the middle. 18 starts, 17 relief appearances. And that year, he had a 147 ERA in 30 and two third innings pitch out of the pen, a 457 ERA as a starting pitcher. So prior to 2020, he pitched 46 in a third innings out of the bullpen. Since 2020, the last four years, it's only 15 innings pitched out of the pen. In one relief appearance in 2020, two in 2021, one in 2022, and two last year. So, yes, he has done it.He has had success with it. But he has been a starting pitcher, really, for the last four years. So as much as you look at that low ERA, I don't know if we can expect, oh, now he's in the bullpen. He's going to pitch to a sub two. It's hard for me to buy into that, considering how poorly he's pitched this year. But maybe this is a change that he needs. And I'd imagine we're not going to see him pitch in any high leverage situations. It's probably going to be a starting pitcher, you know, gets knocked around like Jose Quintana did tonight. If Hazer PERSON was available, he would have been the guy to come in and hopefully eat some innings. And I'm sure they'll try to play to some good matchups that he has and get his confidence going. And maybe he can be a weapon out of the bullpen. And you never know. The Mets depth could take a hit at some point this season that might need Houser PERSON out of the rotation again. But for now, he's in the bullpen. Now, what does this mean for the rest of this road trip? The Mets set this up so Jose Kintana could get two starts on this road trip. I'm laughing because the first one went horribly wrong. Game up, eight runs on 10 hits tonight could not have been worse. The only positive only through like 65 pitches. So he should be well rested by the time he gets another turn against the Cardinals ORG.And that is the team that he went eight innings against a couple starts ago. So I think that was part of this as well. You could have had Houser pitch against the Cardinals, gone to a six-man rotation, give him one more try at it. But Houser had given up six runs against the Cardinals a couple starts ago, and Katana PERSON had pitched great. And I think from what they probably heardfrom McGill's rehab, he's going to be back. And so if the match choose to go to a six-man rotation after this road trip and they have their off day next Thursday, they can slide in McGill PERSON, or if they might go the other direction, they could put Joey Lucchese PERSON in the starting rotation in the big leagues and have McGill stay in Syracuse ORG and get optioned. That's pretty much, I think, the decision that they will make after this road trip.Christian Scott PERSON said he has no idea how long he's going to be in the big leagues. He's just going to take the ball whenever they give it to him, do the best that he can. He's fired up to get this opportunity to pitch in front of what he said was going to be, you know, 50 friends and family in attendance in Tampa GPE. So that's going to be an awesome site to watch tonight. I don't think this is his only start.I think Christian Scott's going to get some run until Kodai Senga PERSON could come back. And then they'll make that decision. When they have Senga and Peterson ready to go, if Christian Scott PERSON has just looked okay, they can send him down, monitor his innings. So the match just decided to do that anyway. He didn't even throw 90 innings last year.It was 87 and 2 thirds. So I think at most this year, maybe you get 120, 125 innings out of Christian Scott PERSON. He's already throwing 25 in a third in AAA ORG. That's why I love this promotion because he has proved that he's in and will be ready. And now you get to have some of the limited bullets that he probably has this season. Maybe it's only 100 innings left. You get those in the big leagues. And either you ride out all 100 right now if he's pitching well and he's helping you, or if you want him for down the stretch, the Mets might have to get creative midseason with what they do with them. But for this juncture of the season for the month of May, it's probably a six-man rotation that includes Christian Scott and Tyler McGill, along with the guys that have been there in Severino, Kentana, Manaya, and Budo PERSON. So that's the new rotation for the Mets ORG.I think it's much better inserting Scott and even McGill and removing Hauser PERSON. And we'll just see how the Hauser PERSON experiment goes out of the bullpen. If he gets blown up a bunch there too, that might be what leads to a DFA ultimately. But for now, they'll give him some opportunities and see what happens as he's now the new Michael Tonkin PERSON, I guess. Now, there was a game that took place on Friday night that I have avoided talking aboutbecause it was ugly from Kentana PERSON. We're going to get into that in just a minute here, how the Mets gave up a ton of runs. They scored a bunch, but couldn't quite complete a big, big comeback. So we'll go through everything that happened in Tampa on Friday in just a minute. First, though, today's episode is brought to you by eBay Motors ORG. Brett Beatty had a three-run homer that disappeared in that crazy dome they got in the trop. And somehow ended up over the fence. He hit that ball in launch angle of 43, so just skied it up. It was 109.2 miles per hour off the bat. After the game, one of the media members said it might have banked off of something in that roof before it went out. But regardless, it was a home run and a big one for Beatty PERSON. You know, it's funny, Aram Layton PERSON, who of course was on the show a couple weeks ago talking prospects and once ranked Brett Beatty in the top 20 prospects and all of baseball, he was at the game with Shoda and Minaga PERSON, I believe, on the mound. And he texted me about Beatty PERSON.And he said, it's pretty obvious to him what the issue had been with Beatty PERSON up to this point. And that was an inconsistent weight transfer where he was getting out on his front foot a little bit too early. And so now I've been watching for it. And what you see with that is the bat's going to drag when he does that. And so I watched the other day, Brett Beat Beatty hit like three foul home runs. That's what happens. You're getting out front a little bit too early. You're not staying back enough. You're not really getting into that load. And these two home runs that he hit in this game, hopefully he's been told that from the hitting coaches and he corrected it because it did seem like he really did way back, get into that back leg and really drive the baseball. He was quick to the baseball. That first home run was a sinker that didn't really sink up and in, and he just was all over it. So nice a moment from Beatty PERSON. Also, some great defense and diving catch in this game continues to show that he's really good defensively at third. And the bats are coming along. Maybe that hamstring is no longer bothering him. That could have been the issue for all we know as far as the weight transfer goes. Maybe he's finally feeling healthy. So that was the one bright spot of the game, is that Beatty PERSON hit that home run. And then in the ninth inning, he hit another one. That one was a hanging slider that he crushed 420 plus feet, 107.7 miles per off the bat. So good day for Beatty PERSON. He went three for four. Horrible day for Jose Cantana PERSON. He gives up three runs in the bottom half of that second inning. So right, when the Mets go up three nothing, it's even. That was on four hits, a couple of which were doubles. Then in the third inning, he gives up five runs on five more hits in a walk and then gets pulled for Danielle Nunez PERSON. And Nunez really helped the Mets out, got the final out of the third pitch in the fourth and the fifth. They gave up a home run to Randy Rosa Rana in the fourth inning to put the Mets in an eight three hole. But they did battle back credit to this lineup. They got four runs back in the fifth. Tyrone Taylor PERSON lead off double. Tomas Nito PERSON got a base hit. Brandon Emma PERSON walked to load the basis. Darling Marte PERSON hit a sack fly.Francisco Lindor cashed in the other two runs with an RBI double. And then Pete Alonzo had an RBI double as well to drive in Lindor cashed in the other two runs with an RBI double, and then Pete Alonzo had an RBI double as well to drive in Linder PERSON. So at one point, the Mets got it to 9 to 7, but ultimately they couldn't score for a while after that, and the raise added on against Jorge Lopez in the sixth inning. It was a Med Rosario PERSON with the RBI hit,Rosario three for five against his former team with two RBIs. That put the Mets down 10 to 7. Danny Young gave them two scoreless innings out of the pen, but Bady PERSON's home run was not enough. They dropped the game 10 to 8. What's interesting about this game is despite the fact that they didn't even get threeinnings from the starting pitcher, the bullpen was not taxed as much as it might seem. Yes, they had to cover five plus innings there. Luckily, they didn't have to pitch in the ninth because they were the away team and they lost. That was kind of good to save some bullets from that pen. And I talked about on yesterday's show how there was going to be some fresh arms coming in. Cole Solcer, I am sure, is in Tampa GPE.I could be wrong. Maybe somebody else, but he's the one guy in the 40 that can get called up right now. I imagine after pitching in back-to-back days, running up high pitch counts, Danny Young and Danielle Nunez are probably heading right back to Syracuse ORG. And Solcer and Scott PERSON should be added to the roster. So that's going to give you another fresh arm. You got Edwin Diaz, Reed Garrett, Adamadovino, Sean Reed Foley, Jake Deekman PERSON,who all weren't used in this game. Solzer gives you six fresh arms. Hauser and Lopez PERSON unavailable by that bullpen, I'm sure. But at least you got plenty of guys available. If Christian Scott's PERSON debut does not go well, you'll have some arms to cover it. If it does go well, you're going to have all of your primary late inning relievers,Sands Lopez PERSON, to come in and to hold down a lead and hopefully get this series even before Luis Seve PERSONrino pitches on Sunday and maybe Seve can give you some length. Then all of a sudden on Monday, you might have Hauser PERSON available to be a long man out of the

Speaker 0924.12s - 934.02s

bullpen and things might get a lot easier. But it was going to be a weird series to try to navigate the innings, and the hope was that Catano PERSON was going to give you length didn't happen.

Speaker 1934.94s - 1034.9s

Huge, huge shout out to Nunez and Young to cover four and a third in that game. And keep this bullpen in good shape for the rest of this series. game and keep this bullpen in good shape for the rest of this series. Now, on tomorrow's show, I will be talking about Christian Scott's PERSON debut. So you're going to have seven days of locked on Mets this week. we're going to talk pretty much exclusively pitching prospects today. And the one header I want to talk about isn't even really a prospect. But I failed to discuss Jose Iglesias on yesterday's show. So I wanted to circle around to it because I did tweet something out about it. You know, Iglesias has three home runs in his last five games, sitting 296, 345 on base, 506 slug.If you're not familiar with who Jose Iglesias is, he's a great spring this year with the Mets ORG. He is a veteran infielder, had a lot of time his crew at the Reds ORG. I think some time with the Red Sox ORG, I'm not mistaken, but a guy that was a really good defensive shortstop that now can be a solid defensive utility infielder who's actually swinging a good bat and because of all of that at some point I do wonder if the Mets make that switch where they DFA Joey Wendell PERSON and they bring in Jose Iglesias I get it you pay Wendell $2 million they're going to give him some more timeI'm sure he's a great teammate, but the defense has to improve. If it doesn't hit, that's fine. But you're there for defense. You've got to play good defense in that role. So we'll see what happens. But I would keep your eye on Jose Glacios PERSON, not only because he's hitting the ball well, but because he really could fill that role for the Mets ORG as a defensive-minded utility infielder who might even bring a little bit more than Wendell PERSON does offensively. Now let's focus in on pitching. So we'll start the level that Christian Scott PERSON just left where you still have Don Hamill and Mike Vassel PERSON. Those guys had not gotten off to nearly the same startthat Scott PERSON did. Hamill gave up four runs on seven hits in his last start. He's got a 5-1-6 ERA and five starts. It does have 30 strikeouts and 22 in a third inning's pitch. But he's had two pretty bad starts, three good ones. So Hamill PERSON has done okay.Obviously, we need to see more. And I don't necessarily think we're going to see Hamel or Vassal this year because Scott's going to be added to the 40 now. And really, if you think about the depth the Mets ORG have, we actually just did an article at JustBaseball.com ORG. Actually, same guy who works with us at Locked on Mets, too, behind the scenes.Tyler Antenel, who does the graphics, the lineup graphics you're seeing every day. So he actually is writing for us to just baseball too. And he wrote an article about if the Mets ORG are a wildcard contenders. So when I was editing it, he was talking about the depth of this rotation. It is pretty crazy how they go nine, ten deep right now. I mean, let's just start at the five that are at the big league level currently withTowser PERSON now in the bullpen. But that's six. If you throw him in as depth, you have coming from injury, McGill, Peterson PERSON, and Senga PERSON, you got Lou Casey PERSON.That brings you all the way up to 10 right there. And then that's not even to mention Max Kranick PERSON. So the bet's got a lot of depth. I don't think that we're going to seeHamler or Vassel this year because of it. And especially because they haven't really taken their triple a just yet. Vassel has been even worse. A lot of depth. I don't think that we're going to see Hamler or Vassel this year because of it, and especially because they haven't really taken the AAA just yet. Vassal has been even worse. A lot of five runs in four and a third. He's got a 10.80 ERA in six starts this year. He got knocked around a bunch in AAA last year. So Vassal, he's losing that top prospect shine. And honestly, I know I had him in the top 10 prior to this season. I think when it comes to pitching prospects, he is falling below Hamill PERSON for sure in my eyes.I think he's below Brandon Sprote for sure, Jonah Tong, Blade Tidwell PERSON. He's dropping when it comes to this system. We'll see if he can figure things out because he is close to the big leagues, but not performing at that level. AA, you got Baleigh-Tidwell PERSON, who is off to a great start, probably due to make a start at some point this weekend.Do his first four starts this year, he has a 169 ERA with 27 strikeouts and 21 and a third innings pitched. It still has to work on the control a little bit, but early returns have been great for Tidwell in AA ORG. He might just get a knockup to AAA ORG at some point this season. Joandra Suarez I talked about on yesterday's show, six and a third perfect following upTyler McGill's PERSON rehab assignment. That's 19 up, 19 down with seven strikeouts, ERA in the season, at 2.60. So Suarez, not a top 20 prospect even, I would say, but a guy that has thrown the ball well since making it to AA ORG. So someone to definitely keep your eye on. Tyler Stewart gave up four earned runs in his last start in AA.That was in four innings pitched, moved his ERA in the season to four, five, eight. So he's not having the same success as what we saw last year where he was older than the competition in high A. He's coming from a six foot nine frame, high arm slot, great extension. He was just blowing guys away. Now he's in a level where the hitters are better. They're able to, you know, fare well against that fastball. So he's got to really learn how to pitch this year. Not quite in the upper echelon of Mets ORG prospects, but a guy that is in the upper levels gives them some starter depth, probably not this year, but a name to watch. We'll see how he continues to progress, especially as he has another year in the Mets ORG pitching lab. Maybe they can help him iron out an arsenal to compliment that fastball, and he could popoff at some point. So I would get too carried away by his start so far, but definitely not dominated the way we saw last year. Brandon Sprope PERSON is sort of dominating the same way we saw Tyler Stewart last year in Brooklyn GPE. He allowed one hit, walk four struck out eight and five scorelessinnings on Friday night. That moved his era in the season to 0.92. Now, he's allowed two earned runs in 19 and 2 third innings pitch so far, has 25 strikeouts, also has 13 walks. So his guy gets the walks under control, but the stuff is disgusting. Right now, I think with Christian Scott PERSON heading towards a graduation from top prospectlist pretty soon here, once he's no longer in consideration and you need a new top pitching prospect in the Mets system, I think there's three guys that will be vying for it. I think it's Blay Tidwell PERSON. I think it's Brandon Sprote PERSON. And it's Jonah Tong PERSON. These are the guys that are, I believe, going to be featured prominently in the Mets ORG' top10 by the end of this season. Jonah Tong is the guy that has just popped off to start the year. He's been unbelievable. In his first start in Brooklyn after already getting a promotion from Port St. Louis ORG, because those hitters in Lohe GPE stood no chance. He still has not allowed an earned run.He didn't give up his first run, but it was unearned. Walk three, allowed just two hits, struck out seven. He now has 43 strikeouts and 23 and two third innings pitched with eight walks. Just nine hits allowed. So he's been great. And I would not be surprised at all if coming into next year,we're talking about Jonah Tong as a top 100 prospect in baseball and the top pitching prospect in this system. He just gets a ridiculous amount of ride on his fastball. He's improved the velocity. And it's just a very interesting combination with his fastball and a 12-6 curveball. So we'll see how he continues to progress. But it is a very exciting time when it comes to Mets ORG pitching prospects because you also have Nolan McLean PERSON in High A. So if you're in the New York GPE area, get out to Brooklyn GPE, watch some of this pitching because you can be seeing guys that will be in the Mets rotation come 2026.McLean PERSON is also going to hit. So it gives you that dual focus that you can key in on if you watch some of those games. He hit his third home run this week. He's nine for 41, average in the 220s. Three home runs and five doubles for eight of those nine hits going for extra bases. It's also struck out 22 times in 44 played appearances. So 50% strikeout rate, not great. He's walked three times. He's interesting, man. 834 OPS is a hitter. I don't think he's going to end up being a hitter in the big leagues.I don't. He might be a guy that, who knows? Maybe he's a relief pitcher pinch hitter, and he's just this weird option off your bench when he eventually gets up. That certainly could happen. I mean, he does have reliever risk.He spins the hell out of the slider. And he's got a good fastball. They're trying to make him a starting pitcher. He's allowed six earned runs. Excuse me. He allowed six earned runs in one outing, his second outing. His other three outings have been scoreless. So six earned through 14 things pitch. It's a 386 ERA. He's got 14 strikeouts. But this farm system is in great shape now when it comes to pitching prospects. We didn't even talk about Cade Morris in Lowe, Jack Wenninger PERSON.There's a couple of their arms. But right now, you look at the top of this system with Scott making his debut to Sprote PERSON, Tong, Tidwell, to Hamill and Vassel still in AAA, Stuart and Suarez PERSON and AA, McLean, there's just a bevy of arms, and that's exactly what the Mets ORG have hoped for. They even have a guy Justin Jarvis who they got in the Marcana trade last year. I don't expect that much of them, but he got called up to AAA when Scott PERSON came up to the big leagues, made it start on Friday, pitched four scoreless. I think he had one strikeout. I wouldn't be too excited about Jarvis PERSON, but it is more depth in the system. So really good stuff on the pitching department for the New York Mets ORG. Anyway, that's going to be all for today's edition of Locked-on Mets ORG.
