On the show today,we got Christian Scott's PERSON debut to discuss. I will talk about that in the first segment. The second segment, we'll talk about the rest of the game, but the Mets ORG lost, as the offense just could not come through when the bullpen led it up late. So we the offense just could not come through in the bullpen, let it up late. So we'll go through that. And then in the final segment, talk about this offense in general, how it has struggled so much over the last two weeks and what has to change for them to get things back on track. Before we get to any of that, though, I'm your host Ryan Fickleston PERSON.If you want to find any of my work, follow me on X at Fickleston, Ryan PERSON. You can also find semi-writing at just baseball.com where I work as the managing editor. The much anticipated debut of Christian Scott took place on Saturday night. And it was a great ball game.Sucks the Mets ORG couldn't come out on top of it. But a really good pitcher's duel between Scott and Zach Lattel PERSON of the raise, just going back and forth. And actually early in the game, it seemed like Christian Scott PERSON would not be plagued by the same fate that every good young met starting pitcher has to deal with, which is never getting run support because he got a run before he even stepped on the mound.Brandon Nimmo PERSON with a trop double, I'd call it, where a ball gets lost in that dome and the outfitter couldn't come up with it. It gets ruled a double eventually, originally an error becomes a double. Starly Marte drives in Nemo PERSON, and there you go. One nothing met, but it was erased very early, and Christian Scott PERSON got ambushed in that first day.Gives up a single, a double, and a single first three batters he faces. But what we saw in that was incredible composure from Christian Scott PERSON. None of those pitches were particularly bad. He was filling up the zone. The rays do the Sky Report, and they were swinging early and often on him. But none of those balls that were hit were hit over an outfielder's head. The exit velocities, none of them were very high. A couple of them, I think one was 60 something. The other one in the 70s, one 83. Nothing was driven over against the wall. It was like he was getting hit hard. And there was sort of an acknowledgment after each hit, like, okay, good piece of hitting.I didn't really miss my spot. And then he comes up and he has to face Randy Rosarena after Arden giving up a run with a couple runners on, no outs, where he was in a precarious spot where he could have hung on crooked number his first inning in his big league career. And while Randy Roserana has not gotten off to a good start this year,he is a hitter with some cachet to him, right? Guy who is the billing player. When they did the pregame, it was, you know, the Mets take on Randy and Rosarena and the Tampa Bay ORG raise. And it was a tough at bat. He gets ahead O2, struggling to put him away, throwing pitches out of the zone that a Rosarena PRODUCT is not chasing, where it eventually comes to a point where it's, all right, got to challenge him.And the first thing we see him do on the seventh pitch of the at-bat is he goes to the split change. And a Rosarena PRODUCT looks foolish on it. He's able to adjust his swing barely because it was wet out in front. He ends up getting a piece of it to stay in the at-bat. But by mixing in that split change, he then helps set up the next pitch, the fastball, where Rose Rana PERSON, a good fastballhitter can't just be geared up for it. And he blows it right by and gets that first big strikeout. And then next pitch throws that gyro slider, gets a double play ball out of the inning, having only allowed one run. And he was fired up and rightfully so. And then from that point on, he settled in.And it was the guy that we've been seeing in AAA ORG carve up lineups. He was just excellent. An eight pitch second inning, a seven pitch third inning, a nine pitch fourth inning. So at the running the pitch count up in the first, for one, he gets three outs on a couple of pitches there. And then 24 pitches to get through the next three innings. And all of a sudden, he's sitting with a tidy pitch count working deep into that game. Fifth inning, he gave up a base hit, stolen base that ended up with the ball into the outfield, allows her owner to be on third base. Doesn't matter, Stranzon PERSON with an inning-strikeout. Sixth inning, he does lose Isaac Paredes to a two-out walk, but Stranza PERSON gets the next guy out. And after getting the first two outs to the seventh inning, he finally gives upanother base hit and his pull from the game at 94 pitches, 67 of which were strikes, Reed Garrett PERSON, Strands that walk ends up being another situation where the runner ends up on third base base stolen base Ball that gets into the outfield but Garrett PERSON gets a big strikeout and that closes the book on Scott who again goes six and two thirds allowed five hits three in the first inning three in the first three batters so two hits after that walks one strikes out six all of his stuff was working got 18wiffs eight of them on fastballs, six of them on the sweeper, four on the slider. All those pitches had a whip percentage over 35%. The only pitch that he didn't get a whiff on was that split changeup, but he got a pretty ugly swing from Randy Rosarena PERSON on it. He's got a four pitch mix,and he can throw any of those pitches for strikes in any count, and he is not scared to attack the zone. You hear his comments after the game said he was calm out there in complete control, said he slept like a baby last night. I mean, he just seems ready for this. He said multiple times that he trusts his stuff. He trusts that it's going to play up against any hitter, and he was excited to just attack the zone and see what happened. And it was a great start by Christian Scott PERSON, a team that so far this year, it's been a struggle to get guys through six innings. It hasn't happened often. You know, Severino, late Lee Kintana had the eight-in-in-ing start.Jose Budo PERSON has been very good at that. But it has not been a consistent thing by any stretch to get guys deep into games. And here's Christian Scott PERSON in his debut. We were wondering if there was an innings count or a pitch count. Maybe it was 95 pitches. He ends again with 94. But I mean, that's, you'll take 95 pitches from Christian Scott PERSON for sure. That's what most guys are going to get these days. And he almost gets you through seven. So looking forward, I cannot wait to see his next start. Carlos Mendoza PERSON said after the game, he's going to get another start. Of course he is. I think he's in this rotation. And how long he's in the rotation? What is the ultimate innings count? All that stuff. Look, we're early in the season. That'll be sort of figured out at a later date. We don't know what the Mets ORG plan for him. But right now, until you get Sangam Peterson PERSON back, he's going to have a runway here to get more starts. And if he keeps throwing the ball like this, you're not going to pull him from the rotation. You're just not because he's going to give you a much better chance to win than a Tyler McGill or a David Peterson PERSON, certainly an Adrian Hauser, even a Joey Lucchese PERSON. This kid's stuff is really good. I think right now, if you look at this rotation, stuff-wise, it's Severino, Christian Scott, and then everybody else. Those two guys are the ones that have plus stuff. Now, can Jose Cantana PERSON make things work and put together some quality starts? Of course he can. Does Sean Mania PERSON have some good swing and miss stuff? Yes. Is he going to pitch deep in games? No, because he's relying a lot on movement and a lot on pitching outside the zone.Sevi and Scott are two guys that can fill up the zone and can go out and just trust their fastball to get out early in counts and pitch deep into games. And that's just so valuable to a team. So it was as good of a debut as you could have asked for. It's unfortunate the lineup didn't come through for him. But Christian Scott really announced himself with this start. And moving forward, it looks like the Mets ORG have a fixture in their rotationfor a long time, which is a huge thing for a farm system that hasn't developed a quality starting pitcher since what? The Stephen Matt's Noah Cinderguard PERSON year, that's the last time they've had guys come up who have gone on to have good careers. It's been a long while. I mean, Tyler McGill and David Peterson PERSON have been the best development, you know, stories they've had. And these are guys who still haven't even completely established themselves as rotation fixtures.Jose Budo PERSON in that same conversation now. But Christian Scott PERSON, he looks like he is not going anywhere outside of innings limits for a long time. Also, just a little note while we're on the prospect side of things. A couple other Mets prospects had great starts today. Blade Tidwell, eight scoreless in AA, five hits allowed, two walks, nine strikeouts. Lower to zero A on the season two, one, two, three. And Noel McLean in high A, five innings scoreless, nine strikeouts, lower to ZERA on the season to one, two, three, andMcClein in high A, five innings scoreless, three hits allowed, one walk, eight strikeouts, lower it hit ZRA to 2.84. So that's the one bright side with what's going on to the Mets ORG right now is they are developing some really good pitching, and that bodes for a bright future. The problem right now, they can't hit. So we'll talk about the rest of the game. The fact that the Mets ORG still lost and lost another series. We'll go through all of that in just a minute.First though, today's episode is brought to you by prize picks. Prize picks is America's number one fancy sports app with more than 3 million members. You do have to acknowledge that Zach Lattell PERSON looked unbelievable for the raise. I mean, he was as good as Scott PERSON, really. I mean, those two guys were going back and forth. I also want to shout out Adam Wainwright because I think all of us were a little disappointed when S&Y ORG did not have this game. It was a Fox ORG game.So as much as you would have loved to have Gary on the call with Ron PERSON, that would have been the ideal booth to watch a pitching prospect, make his debut. I got to say, Adam Wainwright PERSON was a treat to me. I don't know how other people felt about it, but I thought he called a great game as a color guy,you know, really just did an know, did an amazing job, kind of take you into the mind of a pitcher, a guy who probably not quite a Hall of Fame or definitely in the Hall of Very Good and to kind of go through his thought process and to see how blown away he was by Christian Scott PERSON. That was pretty cool. But he was as encouraged by what Lettel PERSON was doing. So I want to acknowledge that at times we just get frustrated. The Mets ORG can't score. You have to point out a great pitcher performance on the other side. With that said, you got to scratch at least two runs across. And the Mets ORG had their opportunities against the bullpen. Seventh inning, Jeff McNeil leads off with a walk on four pitches against Garrett Clevenger PERSON,the first reliever out of the pen, a lefty. Harrison Bader PERSON comes up. He's supposed to feast against left-pin of pitching, right? Well, he gets the first pitch of the ball, second pitch called strike, and then he swings at two pitches inside that would have been balls. So you help this guy get back into the game after being wild early. He strikes out, Brett Bady strikes out, Tomas Nito PERSON strikes out, and Jeff McNeil never gets off first. Eighth inning, Strauss-Martre draws a one-out walk, steals second base. Francisco Lindor, sitting 3-0. He swings at ball four, which I like the aggressiveness. Lindor swinging the bat better than most hitters on the Mets ORG,which he might, you know, come back at me on that. But we'll talk about the stats over the last two weeks of the next segment. He really does have the best numbers, and he has been the best RBI guy. So in some respects, I can give him a pass for looking to swing 3-0, but you got to swing in a strike. And if you are going to swing in a pitch, that's off the plate outside. You got to go with it.And he just didn't. He rolls it over. And unfortunately, you know, that, you know, that's off the plate outside. You got to go with it. And he just didn't. He rolls it over. And unfortunately, you know, that, you know, gives the raise and out on pitching the Pete Alonzo. Not that Alonzo has been good, but first base was then open. They intentionally walk him. They go up against J.D. Martinez PERSON. He grounds out to end the inning. And that was really their best shot at it. I will say that I thought the Mets were going to win in the bottom of the 8th inning when Francisco Lendor PERSON made an unbelievable play on a basis-loaded situation. Adam Madovino, not great tonight.Gets a strike out on the first batterer, but then gives up a hit. Was it walks two to load up the bases? Oh, no, sorry, walks a batter. And then there was that play where it was the chopper to Pete PERSON and Adam Anafino doesn't cover first. So that was brutal too because if he covered and they get that out,the Mets ORG might get out of that inning. But you're sitting there with bases loaded one out. Lador PERSON playing in because obviously you have to cut down the runner at home. And it's a ball that he has to go back on to field it with a backhand, kind of a chopper. And to field it and to come up firing in pretty much one motion, deliver a strike to home to get that out. It's as good of a players you're going to see a shortstop making. Not many will make that play. And I thought that that was sort of a momentum changing play where the mats were going to somehow strand those runners and get out of that play. And I thought that that was sort of a momentum changing play where the Mets ORG were going to somehow strand those runners and get out of that inning. But then Adam Madovino PERSON kind of kills the momentum because he walks in a run and not only is he walk in a run. He walks in a run against Austin Shinton PERSON, who's a rookie who's hitting 171, the only left aid they had on their bench. But he's not a great hitter. And yes, I understood the thought process from Adam Madovino PERSON. And look, Adam Wainwright PERSON even said it on the broadcast. He said he's sitting three, two, you know, is he going to throw the sweeper again to try to get him to swing and miss? But, man, attack the zone. Attack the zone. Throw a sinker in the zone and let the guy put bat on ball.If he beat you, he beats you. He's hitting 171 on the year and your defense just made a great play behind you. Trust those guys. Because guess what? If Shen hits a shot up the middle, maybe Lindor PERSON makes a diving stop and get you out of the inning for all you know. Instead, you take it out of the hands of your defense. You walk in a run, and then Sean Reed Foley comes in, he walks in a run, and then you're losing three to one. The Mets ORG couldn't score anyway, so ultimately it's a moot point, but that was a little frustrating how that ended up unfolding, and that's how you lose the game. Beyond that, though, Harrison Bader draws a walk in the ninth, and you couldn't do anything with it. So you have base runners in each of the last three inings and you just couldn't catch any of them in. So this lineup has been abysmal and we're going to talk about it in the next segment, but just looking at what this Mets team has been this year, they start off O and 5. They went 12 and 3 in that great stretch, that 15 game stretch. It was awesome. They won 5 series in a row. It was just great baseball. They get themselves to 12 and 8. Since then, they're 4 and 9. Now, they might just win the final game of this series. Avoid getting swept. Hopefully with Severino on the mound versus Ryan Pepio PERSON. You get a good pitching performance because Pepio is a really good young starting pitcher. We'll see how the Mets ORG fare against them.Hopefully, they score some runs for Sevi PERSON. They get a win and then that would bring them right back to 500, I believe. But if you look at that stretch, right, and where they're at totally. So you have horrible start to the season, great 15 games. Now you've played bad over these last, you know, four series. You've lost three of them already because you already lost the series. The one series you didn't lose was the four games split against the Cubs ORG. So now your series record on the season is 5-5 and 1, and you are pretty much 500. Now with Christian Scott in this rotation now, with Kodai saying coming back with Severino pitching as well as he has Jose Budo, some combination of Shaw and I, Tyler McGill, David Peterson PERSON. I do believe in this rotation figuring it out. I really do. And the bullpen has been great. The pitching has not been the problem for the New York Mets ORG. They have to hit. So what's going on there? That's where we're going to close the show talking about what this offense has done over the last two weeks here and where everything has gone wrong. So I'll get to that in just a minute.First note, today's episode is brought to you by DoorDash ORG. Want to make Mom smile on Mother's Day? And if you sort the stats at NMDB.com, look at the last 15 days, which is the last 14 games. And you try to find the culprit for why this offense has struggled, you pretty much look at the entire team. I mean, seriously, Francisco Lindor, Brandon M.O, and Strangley-Marte are the only three hitters that I would say are having a decent go of it over these last couple weeks. And the first day you have to talk about is Pete Alonzo PERSON, because he's been brutal. He's hitting 154, 250 on base, 308 slug. He's got two home runs in his last 52 at bats. And this is a contract year for Pete PERSON, not only to show every team that he's worthy of getting that big deal, but to show the Mets ORG and approve to the Mets that he's worth that contract. If you ask a Mets ORG fan right now at the way he's swinging the bat, they're going to come around and say, no, don't sign this guy. Obviously, he's going to put up his numbers by the end of the year. But it's how he puts up his numbers. You look at what he did last year. Let me pull up those stats again for exactly how poorly he hit and sort of the breakdown of it because, you know, Pete Alonzo PERSON got to the home runs and the RBIs, but how he got there, it's no wonder why the Mets ORG line struggled so much because he went from being a 271 hitter in 2022 when he drove in 131 runs and hit 40 homers. So that year, he was a more complete hitter, got on base at a 352 clip.Last year, he hit 217, 318 on base, 504 slug. This year, right now he's got eight home runs. And on the surface, you say eight home runs, 32 games. That's not bad, right? 32 games, what, about a fifth of the season? So eight times five, oh, look at that. That's 40 home runs. These are fangor stats, so it's a game behind. But the point still is his home run pace is fine. Even his RBI's, 16, that's 40 home runs. These are fan grass stats, so it's a game behind. But the point still is, his home run pace is fine. Even his RBI's. 16, that's a little bit light, but it's not horrible. But hitting 220, and that's not even counting today's game, so I'm sure that averagedropped a little bit more. You need Pete Alonzo PERSON to figure it out. And I will do a deeper dive on Pete throughout this upcoming week. I will spend an episode where I break it all down. But looking at the numbers last year, he had a 10 home run May, a 10 home run March in April. So he had 20 home runs before the calendar got to June. And he had a brutal June. That's when the Mets ORG struggle. That's also when he got hurt. July, not the best numbers. August had nine home runs. That's when the Mets struggle. That's also when he got hurt. July, not the best numbers. August had nine home runs. But there was no month outside of March Nipp or where he hit over even 2.30.So you need to see Alonzo PERSON get that average up. When Alonzo PERSON is a complete hitter, that's when he is the real dangerous threat. And that's when the lineup can go. Because when the power is not there, at least he's doing other things. You look at 2022. He had a 250 month start the year. Then he hit 315. Then he hit 265 exactly in June and July. His worst month when it came to the average is August, hit 254, 273 in September and October. I mean, he was a different hitter that year. The Mets ORG need to pay that guy. If he's the guy he was last year and who he's been to start this year, while I still ultimately side with giving this guy a contract and keeping him because of what he means to the franchise, you got to be really careful what that number gets up to. I'm not paying him more than Matt Olson or Freddie Freeman PERSON. I mean, come on. He's not as good as them as a hitter. So that's the big thing for this lineup. Pete Alonzo PERSON's got to figure it out, but it's not just him. It would not be fair to just say it's only on Pete Alonzo PERSON. You lost Francisco Alvarez, the combination of Omar and Reviz and Tomas Nadeo over the last 15 days, six for 43. It's a 140 average. And Nito PERSON did damage early in that stretch, I believe. Had the home run and the double in that one game from not mistaken. So, yeah, I mean, you're getting nothing from your catcher spot every night, which is why I think Nito should be starting more because if Nerva PERSON's hitting, he's killing you defensively. I think Nito PERSON is earning the backup catcher job because he is better with a glove. Then again, tonight, a couple just awful throws to second base where, you know, the pop time, the way that Christian Scott had held them or even, what was that second? It was the second one on on Havanaugh. No, it's Garrett PERSON. Garrett came to home pretty quick. That one should have been and out. Just an awful throw. So Nito PERSON, the catchers have to be better. I'm more focused on the defense, but you're not going to get much offense from them. Jeff McNeil, 245 average, 298 on base, 302 slugs, 600 OPS. He's been bad.Harrison Bader, 200 hitter, 243 on base, 200 slug. That's a 443 OPS. Tyrone Taylor, 219, 219, 375. That means he's not walking anymore. He does have a home run, but 594 OPS, certainly not the same guy he was, whether that's a red hot. DJ Stewart, you look at the 361 on base percentage. You think, all right, but he's sitting 148 with one home run, 620 OPS. J.D. Martinez PERSON, You give him a pass. He's pretty much in an extended spring training right now, but numbers haven't been great.267 average, 290 on base. 333 slug. No home runs yet. 623 OPS. Brett Beatty PERSON had a big game, even with it. OPS of 694, 220 average.Starling Marte PERSON has been okay. 275 average. You'll take that 7 RBI second most on the team during this stretch, but 12 strikeouts and 40 at best. That's not great. Only one walk, 286 on base, 375 slug.Brandon Nimo PERSON, he's been decent. He's only hitting 234, so that's where he want to see an uptick and performance, but he has drawn 10 walks. So he's getting on base at a 390 clip, and his OPS is 773. It's not bad. He can still do more, but he's not what's dragging the offense down. And Francisco Lendor PERSON is not either. Over the last two weeks, 13 for 51, that's a 255 average, 296 on base, but a 529 is slugging percentage, five doubles, three home runs, a team best 13 RBIs. A lot of the games that they've won are the few games that they've won have particularly been off of the Bat of Lundor. So, you've got to give credit worth due to him. He has been turning around, and I still think there's another gear he can get to with a little bit more consistency.Funny enough, the best OPS on the team, Mark Viantos. Three for seven, limited to ample home run three RBSs, no walks, no strikeouts. The Mets of the team are 22nd and run scored over this two-week stretch, 23rd in OPS. They have to be better. Now, what will be better moving forward? What can we count on? I still believe that back of the baseball card, you're going to see more from Nimel Lundor PERSON, even though, and I think what they've actually showed in these last two weeks is guys thatare starting to figure out and starting to turn the corner. Pete Alonzo PERSON is going to be better than this. How much better we'll see. I don't know what is going to hit this season. He could hit 220, but the home runs will come. Hopefully he can figure it all out and get back to being the 2022 Alonzo PERSON. That's the guy that can really help carry this lineup. Gady Martinez is going to hit two. I don't think he's looked awful and he's at bats. He's still trying to get his timing down.So I think he'll produce and I believe that Jeff McNeil will be better than this, but how much better? I don't know. I don't because it's been a couple years now. Sands 2022, if you look at 2021, 2021, 23, you know, it's fair to have your doubts about what type of hitter and McNeil will be moving forward. I also don't know what you're going to get from Bader and Taylor PERSON offensively because those guys aren't good offensive players throughout their career. So even though they were great early in the season, a drop off sort of expected. Will they be better than the subsequentOPS for the two of them? Absolutely. But how much better? I don't know that. And then DJ Stewart PERSON, we'll see how long he can continue to know, continue to stay on the roster. I think you look at the on-base percentage. He's giving you good enough at bats where he doesn't really warrant dropping him off. As much as I'd like to see Mark Viantos on this roster, Stewart PERSON's better suited for this role. And honestly, to a certain extent, you almost wonder if the other guy struggle, at what point do they go offense in the outfield and putNimmo PERSON and center and their steward and left a little bit. They might have to. But this team needs to figure some things out offensively. That's what's going to make or break their season. And as much as we could talk about prospects coming up, Luis and Halicunia PERSON has not gone off to a good start this season. Drew Gilbert PERSON, hurt. Jet Williams PERSON, hurt. So there's not a top prospect coming the way Christian Scott PERSON just did to uplift their rotation. So these guys in house had to figure it out. And we're looking primarily at the star players. Nemo, Lador, Alonzo PERSON, they have to drive the offense. You need to continue to get some good contributions from Straly Marte PERSON, J.D. Martinez PERSON, I believe, will be better. Think Jeff and Gil PERSON will be better than this. And then also, I imagine Brett Beatty is going to produce good signs with that first game of this series. And then eventually you will get out for us back. And that's going to be a massive boost in this lineup. But this season, I really think the mats are going to have enough pitching. The lineup is going to make or break if they are a 500 team or a team that can actually stay in the wildcard hunt and make the playoffs. It's going to come down to the bats. So we'll see what happens in this final game of the series against the race.I'll be breaking that down tomorrow. I also might do that dive on Alonzo PERSON. So we'll see if you want to make sure you don't miss that show.
