Speaker 50s - 11.76s

It's the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. Hey, everyone.

Speaker 411.88s - 30.44s

Welcome to Locked on Lakers 4 Thursday, Brian Komenetsky, Andy Komenetsky PERSON. Could Darwin Ham's PERSON total lack of popularity make it really hard to hire the next coach, depending on who that guy is? We'll tell you next.

Speaker 032.1s - 42.66s

You are Locked-on Lakers ORG, your daily Los Angeles Lakers ORG podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network ORG, your team every day.

Speaker 444.46s - 85.22s

Thanks to everybody for making Locked- Lakers. First listen of every day, Monday through Friday, no matter how or where you get your podcast, this one's always free and never behind paywall and locked on Lakers on YouTube ORG. So we're over 24,000 subscribers are all hanging out, talking Lakers ORG, getting themselves ready for an off season. They came a little early. So a few things that we want to get into as we turn our attention back towards the coaching search. Some people on the YouTube channel have been asking us really for years about Mark Jacksonand this percolates, you know, given how often the Lakers ORG turn through coaches. I was going to say they've unfortunately,

Speaker 585.84s - 100.96s

whether you like the idea of hiring Mark Jackson PERSON or not, there have been way too many opportunities just to ask, why not Mark Jackson PERSON? And so that is a bigger problem than Mark Jackson PERSON himself, again, whether you want to hire him or not.

Speaker 4101.82s - 106.78s

The problem isn't Mark Jackson, it's Mark Jackson's PERSON season. So.

Speaker 5107.2s - 108.68s

Yes, very much so.

Speaker 4109.54s - 142.04s

For those who celebrate, which is apparently the Lakers ORG. It comes far more often than like eclipses or comments or things like that, that's for sure. So we'll get into that and respond to the collective question that we're gettingon the YouTube page. We'll get into some advice respond to the collective question that we're getting on the YouTube page. We'll get into some advice, some sound advice that has been given to the Lakers ORG about what they need to do regardless of who they coach. But first, we have a piece of data or data. Are you a data or a data person?

Speaker 5142.44s - 150.9s

I usually say data, but I don't know why. For this show, I've been going data. I think it's because of Fisdale, David Fisdale PERSON. Take that for data.

Speaker 4151.7s - 159.7s

But yeah, anyway, but that really indicates an interesting wrinkle in who the Lakers ORG might need or

Speaker 5159.7s - 165.66s

might not be able to bring in to replace Darvin Ham. We'll get to all that in a second,

Speaker 4165.76s - 167.26s

but first I do want to let you know

Speaker 5167.26s - 170.78s

that today's episode is brought to you by Monopoly Go PRODUCT.

Speaker 4170.86s - 201.74s

We've got to talk more about Monopoly Go PRODUCT. It's a fast-paced game that lets you team up with friends for tournaments to unlock awesome prizes, like unique stickers for trading, cool playing pieces, and hilarious emojis for taunting your friends. So download Monopoly Go now for free on Google Play ORG or the app store.Andy PERSON, democracy is an interesting thing. So we were talking about especially these days. It is. Monday? Was it Monday show?We were talking around.

Speaker 5201.92s - 272.84s

It was it was during, I believe, it was either Monday show or were talking around, potential? It was, it was during, I believe, it's either Monday's show or Tuesday's show. We ended up, we were not planning on this as a topic. No.Somehow we ended up on the idea of whether or not Darwin Ham PERSON being seen rightly, accurately as a Mike Budenholzer PERSON disciple. He spent many years on two different staffs with Mike Boodenholzer PERSON, the hawks, the bucks, whether that time under Bud PRODUCT would make Bud a very difficult sell as the guy who replaces Darwin PERSON, because again, you would be replacing guy you fired with the guy who taughtthe guy you fired everything he knows. And it ended up leading to the question of whether or not fans in an either or, I want to make it clear, this is an either or you have to pick one, even if you want neither, you have to pick one. Either Mike Budenholzer PERSON, who is a far more sensible hire and does have a ring a few years ago, but again, the connection to Darwin, or bring back Phil Jackson, who's almost 80 years old, has been out of coaching.

Speaker 4273s - 275s

It'll be 79 at the start of the season next year.

Speaker 5275.36s - 296.18s

He has been out of coaching for more than a decade at down the tail end of his coaching career, which Brian and I covered. We were around that team every day. Phil Jackson PERSON was making it clear then that he was having a difficult time relating to the kids who are now even younger. And Phil PERSON was struggling to get around then, much less now.

Speaker 4296.54s - 303.62s

He projects a very strong these teenagers need to get off my lawn vibe. So, yeah.

Speaker 5303.78s - 335.62s

So who would Laker ORG fans rather have? Brian insisted, well, of course the answer is going to be Mike Boonholzer PERSON because Phil Jackson PERSON makes no sense. I said, you're correct. But if we put this to the listeners and the viewers, Phil Jackson PERSON's going to win. So we did a poll in the community section of the YouTube ORG.And lo and behold, 738 votes show that Phil Jackson, 64% over Mike Boodenhulzer PERSON. Checkmate, dummy.

Speaker 4336.56s - 343.9s

I had much more. I think this poll was filled with outside agitators. This poll was filled with outside agitators.

Speaker 5351.46s - 360.44s

Even if 20% were just trolling to make you look foolish, it doesn't change the fact, then it just shifts to 60, 40 bud, which is still insane. That's ridiculous.

Speaker 4362.52s - 363.16s

But I told you it would be the case.

Speaker 5365.96s - 367.1s

And I guess it's just that,

Speaker 4370.52s - 388.08s

Darwin PERSON's just that unpopular. And so while you could look at it and, you know, in maybe the sense of like the Lakers are firing Anakin and hiring Obi-Wan PERSON, he was the teacher and like, you know, he's pretty good. You know, maybe there's a way to look at it that way. But another guy whose pupil didn't work out.

Speaker 5388.46s - 389.56s

Yes, it's true.

Speaker 4391.42s - 393.62s

His pupil caused a lot of damage.

Speaker 5393.82s - 394.8s

He came through in the end.

Speaker 4394.94s - 399.38s

He did come through in the end. A lot that needed to.

Speaker 5399.76s - 401.3s

A lot of dead people later.

Speaker 4401.72s - 404.36s

A lot of dead people, a blown up death star.

Speaker 5404.44s - 408.14s

Like, do we have to blow up El Segundo GPE in order for this thing to work out?

Speaker 4408.52s - 413.44s

A little late for the folks on Alderon FAC, but yes, he did come around in the end.

Speaker 5415.4s - 424.04s

It is indicative just of how unpopular Darwin Ham PERSON is that the, you know, the guy, you know,

Speaker 4424.1s - 473.44s

certainly the highest profile former head coach that has been circulating. And we'll get to Mark Jackson here in a minute. But like of the guys who are sort of in the market currently whose names, you know, recently been a coach as opposed to, you know, the Bang Gundy's and Jackson PERSON's of the world who are or I was thinking Mark Jackson PERSON but also Phil Jacksonwho have been out of the game for a little while in that regard. My question to you is this though. Okay, so people aren't thinking super rationallyright now about whether or not Phil Jackson PERSON also insulted LeBron James's PERSON like entire you know support group you know is the agent.

Speaker 5473.44s - 479.2s

I mean there's management team they're like I'm just like all of it it's like the the entire

Speaker 4479.2s - 488.16s

infamously years ago he referred to Maverick Carter and Rich Paul PERSON and others that control

Speaker 5488.16s - 491.52s

LeBron PERSON's business interests, his careers, all this stuff.

Speaker 4491.58s - 493.12s

And by the way, do it very well.

Speaker 5493.58s - 501.44s

Referred to them as LeBron PERSON's posse, which has all sorts of just terrible connotations to it.

Speaker 4501.88s - 509.22s

Phil did eventually apologize, but word on the street was LeBron PERSON was very rightly insulted by it.

Speaker 5509.74s - 512.72s

And I also doubt Phil PERSON meant it.

Speaker 4513.26s - 518.8s

I will question without going back and hearing it, looking it up, whatever,

Speaker 5519.06s - 522.72s

I will go ahead and question the sincerity of Phil Jackson's PERSON apology there,

Speaker 4524s - 599.64s

just from being around Phil PERSON. The question that I have, though, is let's say, you know, this is sort of reflective of the general feelings about Bud or a, you know, Charles Lee PERSON. They wanted to go with another assistant from the Bud PRODUCT tree. Bud PRODUCT, by the way, comes from the pop tree so it's not like he they just found like buddnholz PERSON are under a rock somewhere i mean he's got a pretty goodpedigree of his own does it matter that lakers fans before we get to lebron FAC and ad and all the other people all the other stakeholder here stakeholders here do think, Andy PERSON, that it matters if fans are that much against the higher from the jump as this poll might indicate? Because again, people voted for the 79-year-old who insulted LeBron and really does not seem to connect all that well with today's youth. So that's my question for you next. Lockdown Lakers is brought to you by Yahoo Finance ORG.

Speaker 3687.18s - 689.06s

This is Jake from Lockdown.

Speaker 5689.4s - 693.98s

Lockdown has teamed up with State Farm to spotlight some of the greatest supporting players in NBA ORG history.

Speaker 3694.36s - 750.3s

You know Michael Jordan won six NBA titles and Kobe won five titles with Phil Jackson PERSON running the triangle offense, but did you know that Phil Jackson PERSON didn't invent that offense? There's one man behind the scenes that helped Michael Kobe and Phil win 11 championships in a supporting role. His name was Tex Winter PERSON. As a Navy veteran serving in the Second World War, Tex returned to college at USC ORG, where his coach Sam Barry PERSON taught him the triangle offense. As a coach, he worked his way through the ranks in college starting at Kansas State and as assistant to Hall of Famer Jack Gardner PERSON. Tex would later become the head coach at Kansas State ORG and wrote a book about the triangle offense. In 1985, Tex joined the Chicago Bulls as an assistant and helped teach second year guard Michael Jordan how to run his triangle offense. Three years later, Phil Jackson PERSON became the head coach and the rest is history. Even legendary coach Phil Jackson PERSON needed someone like Tex Winter to support his team success. Sometimes you and I need that kind of support too. Think of State Farm ORG likea pivotal team player. When you need help protecting the things that matter most, remember the jingle and just say, like a good neighbor,

Speaker 2751.18s - 756.72s

State Farm ORG is there.

Speaker 4757.44s - 758.66s

All right.

Speaker 2764.4s - 769.1s

Being the coach of an NBA ORG basketball team is not necessarily like running for student council president where it is ostensibly a popularity contest.

Speaker 4769.1s - 771.6s

But, you know, optics matter.

Speaker 1773.16s - 781.84s

It's the, the, it can get directly into the type of media coverage you get and all this.

Speaker 4782.04s - 807.24s

So I'm wondering how much you think it matters how on board Lakers ORG fans are. And if they are already off board with a guy like Budenholzer PERSON, who again, if you want to hire a coach with some experience is as accomplished, really is the most accomplished coach that's out there and available to hire.

Speaker 5807.24s - 958.22s

Well, if your accomplishment bar has a championship on his resume, Mike Boodenholzer PERSON will be your first and only choice. There is nobody else who will realistically shake out that is going to be a remotely sensible choice. So it's basically Mike Boodenholzer PERSON or somebody that maybe was an assistant on a championship season, but not the head coach. As far as the fans, you know, sentiment towards it and that sort of feedback, the excitement, if you really truly think Mike Boodonholzer PERSON is the best option, and we'll get more into detail about it, but you have enough player approval that you feel like you're going to be going, you're going to be moving forward just with everybody on the same page in a positive place, then I don't think fan sentiment should stop you from doing it, but you need to be extremely aware of the marketing challenge and the selling challenge that is going to be there with Mike Budenholzer PERSON.And this is something I got into a little bit of, I want to say a back and forth because it wasn't hostile or anything like that, but a discussion with somebody in the comment section of the YouTube page who thought that me bringing this up was ridiculous. And I'm like, no, it's not. I have seen enough sentiment and I've spent enough time around Laker ORG fans to know that there is going to be some great apprehension, if not flat out unhappiness with Budenholzer PERSON, right orwrong because of his connection to Darwin Ham PERSON. I can promise you that's going to be the case. Do I think it's enough of a reason not to hire him? No, but I do think it's something you have to consider because this being your seventh try at a coach since 2011, it's probably time that you got it right. And if you want an example of how fan sentiment can get things off on the wrong foot in a very poisonous way from the beginning, look no further than Mike Dantone PERSON.When they brought in Mike Dantone to coach Steve Nash, they messed this up in a way that made it seem like a decision between Mike Dantone and Phil Jackson PERSON. a decision between Mike Dantony and Phil Jackson PERSON, Dantone PERSON was never going to win that. And it got everything off to a very bad foot that ultimately, you know, Dantone PERSON made some mistakes of his own,but I don't think he ever recovered from that introduction.

Speaker 4962.02s - 967.08s

Now apparently they're choosing between Boone and Holzer and Phil Jackson again. Like we're right back to the same place, Andy PERSON.

Speaker 5967.44s - 977.52s

Let's make it clear. The organization is not doing that. This is a false choice we presented. I want to make sure there's a thousand different ways.

Speaker 0977.52s - 978.8s

Calm down aggregators.

Speaker 4979.86s - 982.4s

There's a thousand different ways.

Speaker 0983.04s - 985.44s

Clearly the franchise can F this up.

Speaker 5985.44s - 987.5s

Let's not make up reasons. Local,

Speaker 4987.62s - 994.3s

local podcasters declare Phil Jackson and Mike Bodenholz are leading candidates for Lakers ORG job.

Speaker 5994.6s - 1002.58s

Like, let's at least limit it to all the mistakes that they're organically going to make, not the ones that we choose for them.

Speaker 41006.7s - 1007.82s

It is reflect.

Speaker 51008.02s - 1008.44s

I don't,

Speaker 41008.66s - 1009.06s

I think,

Speaker 51009.16s - 1009.84s

I think you're right.

Speaker 41009.94s - 1025.6s

I mean, it matters. Like the vibes matter. They don't matter. They don't matter. They don't matter so much that if you really like, bud, you don't hire him or you think Charles Lee PERSON is a great up, up-and-coming assistant, that's where you want to go. I mean, look,I think Mike and Norrie PERSON, um, he is made a strong. He is a very strong. My vote, man. I think Mike and Norrie PERSON made a strong

Speaker 51025.6s - 1027.42s

my boat, man. Right.

Speaker 41027.62s - 1079.6s

As a lifelong supporter of Mike andori PERSON, for people who don't know Mike Anori PERSON is the assistant in Minnesota who is essentially doing the walking for Chris Finch whohad a knee surgery after he's collided with in the first round. And so Mike Anori PERSON has been really literally out up and in front for the Timberwolves over these first couple games of the series where they've done very well and is considered an architect of that defense, which is as good as any in basketball by a lot. So, you know, people probably didn't know who Mike and Norrie PERSON was. Many people are looking at those first two games and thinking, that's a heck of an audition tape. And so, hell, we might be able to get Chris Finch if he keeps this up.

Speaker 51081.44s - 1083.04s

Chris Finch might be available.

Speaker 41083.46s - 1088.28s

Just roll them all, roll them on over in that little cart he's got.

Speaker 51088.78s - 1092.42s

Put him in his rascal and send him on his way.

Speaker 41094.58s - 1100.36s

Look, I mean, they play at UCLA ORG. They practice it like UCLA Health Center ORG or whatever it is.

Speaker 11100.36s - 1102.6s

Like there are doctors all over that place.

Speaker 21103.6s - 1108.22s

And so like, but the assistant coach thing is, is, is always a really interesting

Speaker 11108.22s - 1121.12s

one. And, you know, David Adelman PERSON is considered, you know, an architect of, of what they're doing offensively in Denver GPE. And so, like, people probably are looking at the series and going, well, David Adelman's the wrong guy.

Speaker 41121.24s - 1165.42s

It's like, well, you know, and I was, if Mike and Norrie doesn't make himself a lot of money this offseason, he's put himself in position to be hired somewhere pretty darn soon because Minnesota ORG's just looked that good. But like, this is the the this is both the problem and like the box you're in when you keep churning through coaches is you lose credibility really quicklyon the decisions you make. And now like people are rightly questioning Rob Polinka PERSON is like, well, you're the guy who hired Darwin PERSON. I thought it was a good idea. I was a good idea. Most people did. Well, you're the guy who hired um, Darwin PERSON. Okay,

Speaker 01165.46s - 1167.52s

I thought it was a good idea. Right.

Speaker 51167.86s - 1167.88s

I mean,

Speaker 01167.88s - 1168.8s

most people did.

Speaker 51170.32s - 1179.1s

Um, and you're the guy, you know, certainly he was, he was involved with the Frank PERSON thing, right?Yeah. Magica quit. Right. So, you know, and that was there, being like,

Speaker 41179.14s - 1186.88s

you don't even really get tons and tons of credit for Vogel PERSON necessarily because he was your third choice. Of course.

Speaker 51187.02s - 1189s

They really wanted kid. They just didn't like the object.

Speaker 41189s - 1190.14s

That's true. So fourth.

Speaker 51190.66s - 1198.44s

At best. Remember, they hired the guy they wanted just to be around. I mean, when Frank PERSON failed.

Speaker 41198.94s - 1302.52s

This is where we've talked about this before, where you knew that the organization was never truly behind Frank Vogel PERSON and never ever bought in even after the championship because they gave him the fake extension. Right. Part of his last season with the Lakers, they gave him a one year extension. You don't do that with a coach that you respect who just won you a championship. So, you know, Rob, you know, Frank PERSON turned, it worked with Frank. But, you know, it's not like this was the guy they circled and said. And they also, you know, were with the crew that lowballed Tyloo, which is why I saw a great quote. I believe it was from Zach Lowe that says the Lakers are smitten with Tylo PERSON. I am also smitten with Tyloo, but he should be their coach right now, and we shouldn't be going through this. And so, you know, it's legitimate to question the people who are doing the hiring. And so it puts things, you want to make sure you're doing stuff in a way that it empowers the next coach. And if you are doing it in a way where half the Lakers ORG fans are going, wait a minute, you just hired the same guy you just fired. And I don't think that's accurate or fair, but people are going to think that. You can argue whether or not you're really empowering him. I want to get to this Mark Jackson PERSON thing and then get back to this question of empowerment. So a couple things to come in the third segment next. Lockdown Lakers is brought to you by Monopoly Go PRODUCT.

Speaker 51303.02s - 1355.54s

Speaker 21358.16s - 1363.38s

Hi, I'm Jake from Locked On ORG. There's a lot to say when buying a new home or car, but really the

Speaker 31363.38s - 1413.9s

first words you want to say are, like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. And trust me, as someone named Jake PERSON, that is a fact. That's the phrase that will help you feel good knowing that you have people who could help you find the right coverage for the things you want to protect. Insurance doesn't need to be complicated with a State ORG Farm agent. With so many coverage options, it feels good knowing you can find what fits you because your situation is unique. And State Farm ORG is there to help you feel supported with the coverage agent. With so many coverage options, it feels good knowing you can find what fits you because your situation is unique. And State Farm ORG is there to help you feel supported with the coverageyou need for your car, your home, and even boats, motorcycles, RVs, and other things that matter to you. And when you need ways to get help, don't yell or be angry because State Farm ORG gives you options there too. In person or on the phone with your local agent or on statefarm.com ORG or their award-winning app, State Farm ORG lets you do things your way. So when you need help protecting the things that matter most, remember to say, like a good neighbor,

Speaker 21414.1s - 1415.02s

State Farm ORG is there.

Speaker 41418.86s - 1468.78s

Mark Jackson's name always pops up, you know, whenever the Lakers ORG are going through coaching churn, which means Mark Jackson's PERSON name always pops up, you know, whenever the Lakers are going through coaching churn, which means Mark Jackson's name always pops up. I am, I am not a fan of Mark Jackson PERSON as a, really, I'm really not a fan of him as a broadcaster either, but as a, as a head coaching candidate. And I, you know, it's, it is related to the time he's been away. It has been related to the, you know, at least the reporting on how his tenure ended in Golden State GPE.And, and just a feeling that he is not a modern coach. So I have not been a big fan of the idea of Mark Jackson PERSON. I get the fascination. I just don't think it's a good idea.

Speaker 51469.74s - 1491.8s

Yeah, I tend to agree. I actually left a comment in the couple shows ago in the YouTube ORG section, just because before we were able to address it, we'd just seen so many, what about Mark Jackson PERSON? What about Mark Jackson PERSON? Like you, I am very wary aboutbringing people back who've been gone that long. Like you mentioned Jeff Van Gundy PERSON. He'd be

Speaker 41491.8s - 1496.9s

the same way. Obviously, we've established we would not rehire Phil Jackson PERSON.

Speaker 51498.02s - 1503.96s

To Mark Jackson's credit, he is not 79. So he doesn't have that going for. But he has been gone

Speaker 41503.96s - 1507.12s

for a decade. The game has changed a lot in a

Speaker 51507.12s - 1514.44s

decade. He's, you know, he's traveled during his time as a broadcaster, but it's not the same

Speaker 41514.44s - 1521.96s

wear and tear and grind of being a coach. And if you've been gone from that for a while,

Speaker 51521.96s - 1526.38s

I think that can be a lot to reacclimate yourself towards that,

Speaker 41526.86s - 1528.06s

if I'm being perfectly honest

Speaker 51528.06s - 1529.08s

when he was a broadcaster,

Speaker 41529.18s - 1552.12s

there was a lot of his commentary about the game that, you know, acknowledging Mark Jackson PERSON knows more about basketball than I ever will, but there was a lot in the way he expressed how he saw the game that I just flat outdisagreed with him. He also has, you alluded to this a bit, Brian. He has a reputation is very difficult to get along with and a conflict seeker.

Speaker 51553.04s - 1561.76s

And given how much of a struggle it has been for the Lakers ORG to land on a coach,

Speaker 11562.46s - 1567.32s

somebody of that temperament feels like a big time red flag to me.

Speaker 51567.88s - 1572.9s

Like putting aside some of the, you know, I'll just address the elephant in the room,

Speaker 01573.06s - 1580.9s

the reports of Mark Jackson PERSON being homophobic, of him being overly religious in the way that

Speaker 11580.9s - 1585.84s

he would coach the team in ways that are inappropriate for a workplace.

Speaker 01586.02s - 1586.62s

Right, right.

Speaker 51588.14s - 1590.92s

Those are things that if I'm being flat out candid,

Speaker 41591.22s - 1595.5s

I don't agree with and I don't think, like you said, are appropriate.

Speaker 51596.22s - 1605.2s

But in some respects, they're the least of what would make me apprehensive about firing them because some of that stuff is just report.

Speaker 01605.48s - 1606s

Excuse me.

Speaker 11606.24s - 1606.64s

Sorry,

Speaker 01606.68s - 1609.18s

it's the Lakers ORG. You skipped to the end. Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 51610.44s - 1614.94s

Sorry, Mark PERSON. I'm just cutting the chase. You're getting fired.

Speaker 41614.94s - 1616.66s

One day, we will review the,

Speaker 51616.8s - 1619.88s

what went wrong in the tenure of Mark Jackson with the Lakers ORG?

Speaker 41620.6s - 1623.04s

I want to apologize to Mark Jackson PERSON there.

Speaker 11623.22s - 1624.52s

That was not fair to him.

Speaker 51624.6s - 1627.62s

He should at least get to coach here before he's fired.

Speaker 11629.62s - 1633.02s

Does Mark Jackson PERSON deserve as much blame as he's getting?

Speaker 41634.84s - 1636.6s

Since the Lakers ORG let him go.

Speaker 11636.8s - 1639.62s

Or finally we're going to pin blame on Rob Belinka PERSON.

Speaker 41639.62s - 1640.3s

Right.

Speaker 51640.5s - 1653.52s

But like those elements, again, not particularly my worldview in terms of whether you're talking about culturally, just the way to run an organization and run your locker room, stuff like that.

Speaker 01653.52s - 1659.12s

But some of that stuff was just reports as opposed to on the record. Some of it was so long ago.

Speaker 51659.12s - 1665.34s

He may have adjusted the way he would approach this. But again, it's the other stuff that is much more of an issue to me.

Speaker 41665.34s - 1683.76s

I always wonder to like, look, guys leave. They get burned out. It's very intense work. But you know, Mark Jackson PERSON's been available for a long time. And there's a reason probably there are people who think he's been blackballed for some of the stuff that I've mentioned.

Speaker 51683.76s - 1697.88s

Sure. But in very me and also I've heard, you know, guys like him in a situation making a ton of money doing what he does for ESPN ORG. It doesn't need to just take the first available job. Um, but also, you know, so I, he's,

Speaker 41697.88s - 1766.5s

he's been very picky, I think is also part of that. But I did, I think the window has closed. It just, there are so many young, um, dynamic, you know, I think more modern coaches that are out there and available or guys who have been inside the rooms working with these young assistants and doing all this kind of stuff really hands on in ways that broadcasters aren't over this time. So like, you know, you can stay flexible. You can have modern thinking while being a relatively old coach compared to the, you know, the 36-year-old assistant and stuff like that. But it helps to be in the game. It helps to be part of that. And I just don't, I don't think he's a good idea.I don't think Jeff Van Gundy PERSON is a good idea. For the Lakers ORG to pursue either of them strikes me as them falling back on old habits of we need to find a name. We need a, you know,

Speaker 01766.5s - 1775.44s

we need a star coach to handle our star players. And, you know, I think,

Speaker 41775.44s - 1779.72s

I think we've reached a place where you've got to be careful.

Speaker 01781.86s - 1789.28s

Like the Monty Williams PERSON cautionary tale of like how much you're paying this guy and sort of,

Speaker 41789.74s - 1837.74s

you know, the coach with enough gravitas who's going to come in and do the job and all these other things. Like you just kind of find the right person and then hope that the learning curve matches what you need. Because like the Lakers ORG are in a bad spot where, you know, if you want to hire a young coach or a first time coach because you thinkultimately they're the best candidate, you still have to maybe build in that, that learning curve time. And that might not be available to you. I mean, the flip side is Darwin's better year was the first one of the two. You know, Jamal Mosley hasn't been out of that long in Orlando ORG and was,it was damn near coach of the year this year.

Speaker 51837.9s - 1865.98s

So the guys do get it together pretty quickly. Taylor Jenkins PERSON, it was obvious from the beginning was very good. Mark Dagnow was obvious from the beginning. He was very good. Steve Kerr, it was obvious from the beginning was very good. Mark Dagnos PERSON, it was obvious from the beginning. He was very good. Steve Kerr PERSON, it was obvious from the beginning. Ty Lou PERSON.Like there are plenty of examples. I mean, showtime was largely architected by Pat Riley PERSON, who went from the booth to doing this. Like, there are plenty of examples of first timers who do a very good job.

Speaker 41866.34s - 1881s

The difference is, the only difference is like, Danio PERSON, I'd have to look it back up, but like his first season, Jamal Mosley's first, like some of these guys, their initial seasons probably would not be filled with the same level of win now pressure. Of course.

Speaker 51881.18s - 1884.64s

As the guy who's going to take the job from Mark Jackson PERSON.

Speaker 41884.9s - 1885.04s

All I'm saying is that their competency was very apparent very quickly. sure. Of course. As the guy who's going to take the job from Mark Jackson PERSON. Sure.

Speaker 51885.22s - 1889.36s

All I'm saying is that their competency was very apparent very quickly.

Speaker 41889.52s - 1954.8s

That's all I mean. And I feel like we also are in a place where across sports, are really across everything because coaches have so much more access to game film. They have so much more access to numbers. They have so much, they are no different than everybodyelse with their 10,000 hours and being able to consume stuff faster. You know, the volume of, you know, just because the process, literal process of film study is so muchfaster now than it used to be. You have the ability to pull up individual clips that you might want from any game that's being played anywhere. It allows these guys to learn in ways, and the same is true as players, by the way. It allows these guys to learn faster. So I think there is less danger than there used to be. You just don't know. Part of it, you just don't know. It's Harry Stotz PERSON, you know what the flaws are. You know, Mike Boodenholzer, you know what the flaws are. I don't know what Mike and Norrie PERSON's flaws are as a head coach. I don't. Okay. Here's another example. He was not a first

Speaker 51954.8s - 2013.3s

time head coach, but he was coming, he was coming off a tenure that even though he had gone to the finals, I'm talking about Mike Brown, his initial stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers ORG that was largely seen as the product of LeBron carrying that sorry roster to the finals, I'm talking about Mike Brown, his initial stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, that was largely seen as the product of LeBron PERSON carrying that sorry roster to the finals as opposed to Mike Brown. Mike Brown will be the first to admit when the Lakers ORG had him for a season in five games, he was not ready for that role. And you and I covered that team. And as a person, we thought the absolute world of Mike Brown PERSON. And you could tell, that team. And as a person, we thought the absolute world ofMike Brown PERSON. And you could tell, I mean, he was even then a defensive genius, like somebody you would want on your staff. He was not ready then like he is now to command a room. Like he, that time with the Lakers ORG, he has said, and even if he didn't say it, it was obvious because you've heard enough players say it and you and I watched it, he was not ready for that role with this team.

Speaker 42014.7s - 2015.98s

It's just, there's a lot.

Speaker 52015.98s - 2021.42s

And the move from assistant, lead assistant, whatever it is, you know, offensive coordinator,

Speaker 42021.42s - 2025.5s

defensive coordinator to head coach where you have to assemble a staff.

Speaker 52025.6s - 2026.5s

You're responsible for it.

Speaker 42026.5s - 2026.7s

You're,

Speaker 52026.78s - 2027s

you know,

Speaker 42027.06s - 2083.14s

the, the ways in which you communicate with your players changes, the lines that have to be drawn between you and your players change. All these are the things. And so it's, you know, there are, there are brilliant assistants who, if the context isn't right, will fail, at least in their first head coaching. There's a lot of reasons guys kind of fail at the beginning and come back and do better the second time because they learn. But then again, not all experience is good. Sometimes you don't always learn the right lessons from stuff. Maybe you get a little more stubborn. Maybe you say, well, this thing happened to me, so I have to react the other way, like the next time when, you know, maybe you stick to your print. I don't know. Not all experience is good or pushes people in the right direction. So it's a tricky proposition for the Lakers, but I think we can all agree that the available Jackson PERSON's are the wrong way to go.

Speaker 12083.94s - 2091.44s
