The co-host of the NFL Stock Exchange ORG, alongside who you've heard from Trevor Sycamma PERSON. And, of course, he covers the draft for NBC ORG sports. And he was a person that we mentioned sort of being probably highest on Michael Penness based off of where he ranked them in the top 20 on his final big board compared to most people who had him in the 30s and 40s at the various big boards. I looked at.So without further ado, let's get Connorson on Michael Pennix, why he was so high on him, as well as the rest of the Falcons ORG trap right now. All right, everyone, welcome back to another illustrious episode of the Lockdown Falcons ORG podcast, and we have nothing but illustrious guests here. Speaker 1168.06s - 170.62s

Aaron, thank you. I appreciate the lovely intro. How are you?

Speaker 2171.02s - 211.82s

I'm doing good, man. You know, we've been talking about Michael Pinnock's for a couple of weeks, and, you know, I feel like we're now reaching the end point, but I think you're a good person to sort of sort of put a button on the whole Michael Pinnock's PERSON conversation because I know you are higher on Pinnock PERSON's conversation because I know you are higher on Pennix than basically consensus looking at your final big board. You had him ranked 19. I think you goand look at Arif Hassan's sort of consensus boards that looks over 100 boards. I think he was like 34, 35 on that. And, you know, I can't, I know you can't speak to what others saw Michael Pinnock's PERSON and beauty is always in the eye of the holder. But, you know, what are some of the things that you saw in Michael Pennix that led to you being higher on him and maybe other people are underrating?

Speaker 1211.82s - 393.44s

And I think what hopefully will give people some confidence in that ranking too is that we do summer scouting on NFL Stock Exchange. Michael Pennix was my QV3 coming out of summer scouting. So the fact is he never moved. It was always Caleb Williams, Drake May, Michael Panix PERSON. Now, you know, tip of the cap to guys like Jaden Daniels PERSON and J.J. McCarthy who really played their way up the rankings this year and just had fantastic seasons. But, you know, Aaron, what surprises me with Pennix PERSON is it felt like he did a lot of the things that he did in 2023. He did them in 2022. And no one cared. I remember when he was going through his process of, you know, exploring returning to school or going to the NFL ORG draft.I talked to a couple of teams that he didn't get any crazy grades back if he had declared for the draft. It felt like the All-Star Circuit ORG was not chasing him. Like they usually chase a lot of these quarterbacks. And I was sitting there and I'm like, man, I get it. Like he doesn't look like necessarily a first round quarterback right now,but he looks really improved. He's taken the rain since transferring from Indiana and really had this Washington ORG offense humming. But hey, he goes back to school. Let's see what he could do this year because I really like the tape in 2022. Not only does Pennix PERSON do that again and looks great with howitzer of an arm. I mean, a four-time team captain, somebody that even through all the injury history,it never felt like the injury is affected as really unique tools, right? He doesn't really need to load up to throw the ball outside the numbers. He kind of has all this power in his forearms and his wrist. The grip strength of the football, this is a quarterback with really, really big hands that just the control of the football is very, very different. And that's how he can throw at those levels of velocity. But I think what he doesn't get credit for, in my opinion, enough is how smart he is before the ball is ever snapped. And that's a really hard thing to scout, right? Because you don't always know what the offense is asking them to do. You don't always know the play call. You don't always know everything on the line. But it's no accident that a guy like this was only sacked 16 times over the last two years. And we're in this weird land of when a guy takes a lot of sacks, a lot of offensive line analysts and former players are like, well, that's a quarterback stat. And then the people that defend the quarterbacks go, well, his offensive line was bad.So I felt like with Pennix PERSON, oddly enough, he was a guy that the constant criticism of him was, well, it's not going to be this easy at the next level. His offensive line's great. And I love Troy Fittano PERSON. I like Roger Rosengarten PERSON.But what Pennix PERSON does pre-snap allows him to get the ball out and avoid sacks. Him and Bo Nix PERSON were excellent at that. And I wasn't even the biggest Bo Nix PERSON guy in the world, but you have to give him credit for that ability. So that's something that to me translates to the pro game, that field awareness, that pre-snap IQ, reading coverages and attacking coverages. And that's the beauty of drafting

Speaker 2393.44s - 479.16s

an experienced quarterback. Yeah, I think that makes a ton of sense. And we'll talk about, you know, how all those skills translate specifically here in Atlanta ORG as well as sort of get your thoughts on the sort of reaction to the Michael Pinnock's PERSON picks, which seemingly shocked the world and we'll do that as we continue today's Lockdown Falcons ORG. I'm curious, what was your reaction to that selection?

Speaker 1479.7s - 629.18s

I was pretty stunned. And here's the crazy part. I had heard that they liked him even before they signed Kirk Cousins PERSON, that they liked him even before they signed Kirk Cousins PERSON, that they liked him a lot. But every team does quarterback evaluations, right? Like I hear teams that have top five quarterbacks in the NFL ORG really like this quarterback, but it doesn't matter. Like if you have Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen, it doesn't matter what they think of anyone, JJ McCarthy. It just doesn't, it's just interesting. Now, then when they signed Kirk Cousins PERSON, I was like, man, that dream probably just died. It's death. And so it came full circle. And, you know, it's interesting to me. It's a very hard one to unpack, Aaron, because I, like, there is the fair criticism of if you knew you lovedMichael Penix and they clearly didn't know they loved Michael Penix when they signed Kirk Cousins PERSON. They fell in love with Pennix after signing Kirk Cousins PERSON. They always liked his talent. But when you draft a quarterback in the top 10, you love the guy. Like you are saying this is the future of our franchise. We are betting the house on you. When you do it when you have an established veteran in place, that it took a lot of recruiting and money to get there, it shows you how much they really liked Michael Pennick PERSON. So I was shocked. I knew it would create some drama. I do.There's no way around it. Like, is there an argument that they should have got a player that would help the Falcons ORG now and gone all in on this Kirk Cousins PERSON era? Yes, but you can evaluate things in a vacuum. Are we going to be saying in two years? Well, thank God they drafted Michael Pennix. He looks awesome. Like they're going to run this division now where this division doesn't really scare you when you look at what's under center. That's the funny thing to me is that why you can't, you can. You can do whatever you want. I won't overreact where people are like, this is a disaster. This is the worst pick we've seen in the NFL draft in five years.I grew up in New York, okay, as a New York Jets ORG fan. I know about bad draft picks. I would consider myself having a PhD WORK_OF_ART in puzzling draft picks. This is one to me that it's been very hard for me to unpack because if you like the player and he's a quarterback, the most important position in football, you can't sit there and say this is a horrific draft pick, right? Because at the end of the day, if he is the future of this franchise and I thinkhe will be, then the pick was worth it. But the road to get here is what's very, very hard to process. And quite frankly, it's going to be very hard to process as long as Kirk Cousins PERSON is in town. Well, I think it's interesting that you use the word process because I think the main

Speaker 2629.18s - 649.52s

criticism of the Falcons ORG in this election is people don't love the process. But if the result is good, I think as you're pointing out, like no one's going to really care about the process. And that's the hard thing to kind of figure out with the quarterback. Because like we're all just sitting here evaluating. We're all just guessing at the end of the day it's hard in terms of who we think is going to

Speaker 0649.52s - 669.8s

be good and a lot of those guesses are wrong a lot of those guesses are right um and when it comes to michael pinnox and sort of his fit in Atlanta ORG i've heard some people question whether or not the Atlanta matches is a good one because of the expectation that Zach Robinson PERSON, you know, is going to be running a Sean McVeigh offense. And a lot of people sort of look at Pinnix PERSON is like,

Speaker 2670.1s - 691.04s

oh, he's not really that quote unquote Shanahan PERSON style quarterback that is going to attack the middle of the field. He's much more of that vertical passing attacked offense. I'm just curious from your perspective, where do you see the fit with Pinnock in this Zach Robinson PERSON offense? And who knows even if Zach Robinson's still going to be around when Pinnock PERSON gets on the field. But I'm just curious, what are your thoughts on that?

Speaker 1691.7s - 819.66s

I like the fit. And I get why people are, it's always hard to try to project what you haven't necessarily seen enough of. Now, I think with this offense, number one, Pennix PERSON was really, really good off of play action, right? And that's going to be a big, big staple of this offense and what it's built on. How do we develop the run game to open up our play action pass game? And the beauty of an actual offense that's effectively using play action is the ability to have a guy that can push the ball down the field. And we know Michael Pennix can do that. And this is someone that off of play action in 2023, 18 big time throws, zero turnover worthy plays. Like the comfort mechanically under play in play action and the ability to really hit his spots at all three levels of the field stands out to me.So I think that's the number one takeaway I'd have with that. Now, a lot of people bring up the beauty of the outside the number is throwing, but the questions of if he could throw over the middle of the field, Washington constructed an offense under Ryan Grub PERSON, who's now the offensive coordinator of the Seahawks ORG. That's how good of a job he did in Washington for those couple of years with Pennixand those guys, that they wanted to challenge every area of the field. And challenging every area of the field puts so much stress on a college defense because whether they don't have the range, whether they're just not used to defending that, because typically a college quarterback is not going to reach certain areas like that. It puts so much stress on them that it worked effectively.I don't know if the outcome of that is, well, Michael Panix PERSON can't throw over the middle of the field. I think to me it's Michael Pennix was so effective throwing outside the numbers. They didn't really, they weren't forced to do a lot of other things in that way because it was so effective, it was so dangerous. So it's an area I think he can grow in because of the coaching, but I also think the coaching will adjust to his strengths to kind of open up the offense differently than what we're accustomed seeing this coaching tree doing. And I think it's no coincidence. There was multiple coaches of thatcoaching tree that really, really liked Michael Pennix. And I think it kind of tells you that they think he's a better fit in their offense than consensus did. Yeah, I think that's more than fair.

Speaker 2819.66s - 931.26s

And, you know, we talk quite a bit about Michael Pennis PERSON because, you know, he's the guy. You know, he's the lightning rod for the Falcons ORG draft. But, you know, we've talked quite a bit about Michael Pius because, you know, he's the guy. You know, he's the lightning rod for the Falcons draft. But, you know, the Falcons drafted seven other players. And I want to pick Conner PERSON's brain on those guys, especially looking at, you know, them seemingly going with a scattershot approach to address their past rush needs. And we'll do that to wrap up today's Lockdown Fawkins. Now, guys, it is the most exciting time of the yearbecause it is playoff time in the NBA ORG. I know another polarizing decision you might call it is their trade up in round two for Clemson defensive tackle Rook Aurora, taking him over guys like Johnny Newton PERSON, Braden Fiske, Chris Jenkins, guys that people were generally higher on than Rook, yourself included. What did you think of that decision

Speaker 1931.26s - 1055.6s

to trade up for Rook Aurora PERSON? Well, it was definitely surprising to me. It shows you how much they like the player because I thought Johnny Newton PERSON was a first round player, right? And I thought Chris Jenkins, there was a higher floor than what a Rororoh ORG has if they were looking for there was a higher floor than what a row row has if they were looking for stability up front. And instead, they made an aggressive play for a guy that he's a ball of clay, right? You look at the length. You look at the explosiveness, the pure athleticism.I believe he's a late bloomer to football coming from a scheme that you watch. I've watched enough of this Clemson scheme over the years with their different top defensive line prospects. It never really lets guys pin their ears back and into stat compile. That's not a way to judge them. So with the row, row, there's times where you see the play strength. There's times where you see the length and the ability to get off the ball, but it doesn't get an opportunity to do that a lot. I think he's really raw instinctually. I think there's times where he could be a bit of a guesseragainst the run and kind of get washed out of plays against the run. And I think with the pass rush ability, with the lack of opportunity compared to other college defenses, it's, you know, is he going to develop? Is he going to, you know, get his hand placement a little bit? Or is he going to utilize that length and explosiveness? So they went with the guy with the most upside rather than, in my opinion, taking two guys with way higher floors in new in and jenkins i'm interested to see how that works out and erin what fascinates me the most is as someone that had rookat 74th overall i had brandon doorless at 72nd overall so they took and i thought they were really similar guys where they have length you could play them up and down the line of scrimmage i think that at times they didn't have their explosiveness utilized enough. So they completely reached on one in a trade-up. And then they got incredible value with the other, where I think the outcome for both range of outcomes is exactly the same.So I'm really fascinated how it works out between doorless and a row-a-row. It feels like one of them will be a hit. But just the process of being that aggressive to get him, when, in my opinion, you got a similar, almost the same player in doorless PRODUCT that much later, that's the part that left my, you know, me scratching my head a little bit. Yeah,

Speaker 21055.64s - 1102.32s

I think that's definitely fair. And, you know, speaking of guys that you kind of had a clustered in the same range, like Braylin Trice PERSON, the Foxx got in round three, the Washington ORG edge edge rusher i think you had a similar rank in thatsort of range and i'm curious what are your thoughts on brayland trice as well as maybe the falcons sort of scattershot approach you know you could certainly go to an alternate universe or whatever and they could just take johnny newton and be like okay we we solved our detackle needs but the falcons are seemingly taking the, you know, scattershot, shotgun approach, whatever you want to call it, where it's like, as you say, you know, between him, Rook and Dorlis and now Brayland Trice PERSON, you know, at leastone of these guys is going to work out and potentially be a major contributor on their defensive front. So what are your thoughts on Trice PERSON? What are your thoughts on that scattershot approach?

Speaker 11102.72s - 1215.86s

Trice, I had 67th overall. They take him 74th. Like, I have no problem with that pick. I mean, he's an unconventional pass rusher. The way he kind of rushes is a little unorthodox. It almost feels like he's really this kind of like, you know, bull in a china shop or he's bouncing off of blockers. He's really violent. Um, his hand placement and power, it knocks guys back. And the pass rush win rate was consistently very high across two years where he was always productive. And with pass rushers, it feels like even the really good ones. There's always a game or two where you're like, man, he just did nothing. Like he just didn't have it today. It felt like Trice brought it every single week for two years. And I think that really says something about his motor effort, sheer power. There was a lot of times where running backs knew to shade to him when the lineman got beat and he'lljust run right through the running back. So listen, he's not overly agile. He's not twitchy. It's a lot of straight line speed and power. But I don't think he's somebody that that will limit him. And I don't think he'll ever be a like your ideal number one pass rusher, but if he's your number two, he'll have a lot of cleanup sacks, he'll have a lot of effort sacks. And I think he'll consistently give the opposition a difficult time for four quarters. And realistically, that's where these guys go. Like the top pass rangers in the league are always taken in the first round. If you get one on day two, that becomes a starter for you, that's a value. Now, if you set this up, like you said, if you took Newton at 35 and ended up with Trice PERSON, it just to me looks a little bit different. So you're right. The shotgun approach is kind of interesting where it's like, okay, we think two of these three are really going to hit and improve our front seven. And I think in a class where the front seven talent was just okay, they did get guys in my, they were all in my top 100. There's no egregious risk. I see them all as starters. And it felt like the Falcons ORG knew, like we have to kind of put our foot on the gas here right nowbecause we don't see the depth in this year's class that we could do that outside the top 100.

Speaker 21216.76s - 1224.58s

Yeah, I think that's fair. So we've already touched upon a little bit on Brandon Doris PERSON, but you have any other thoughts on any of the other day three picks for the Atlanta Falcons?

Speaker 11225.16s - 1259.24s

J.D. Bertrand PERSON's interesting because he's the classic linebacker. You feel like instincts are over athleticism at times with him where, you know, those guys just find a way to make it sometimes. So he was an interesting pick to me. I thought he went a little earlier than I thought. I didn't think he was a great athlete, doesn't have great size, but he feels like he always knows where to be. He understands how to get his teammates in the right places at times. He's got some ball skills because once again, he understands his own coverage. He understands how to read the run. So I'm kind of interested if after that rookie year where he's probably

Speaker 01259.24s - 1263.32s

going to be a special teamer, if he could actually find his way into this front seven that seems to be

Speaker 11263.32s - 1273.96s

getting younger and younger. And then that was really it for me. I mean, McClellan PERSON and I had ranked. They took him 186. I saw him as a committee back. This isn't a backfield that you're looking at and go, man,

Speaker 01274s - 1286.66s

we really need help right now. So good for McClellan PERSON because the committee backfield is kind of ideal for him. If that one of the top two guys gets hurt, he'll be ready to play. I mean, he comes out of Alabama where he's responsible is how I'd call it.

Speaker 11286.7s - 1304.14s

It feels like he knows how to set up his blockers. He knew he does the right thing as a runner. It's never going to be overly flashy. It's never going to be overly explosive. But that's kind of what you look for when you build depth of your backfield. But I didn't, we've made it this long, Aaron. What was your reaction to this draft? At least the first two picks.

Speaker 21305.1s - 1314.56s

Yeah, it was it was questionable because I had basically been operating. There's no chance they're going to take a quarterback. They'll get a guy maybe on Michael Pratt or something on day three or something like that.

Speaker 11314.66s - 1316.86s

Spencer Rattler PERSON. Yeah, I get it.

Speaker 21316.9s - 1324.74s

Yeah. And then, you know, they have to get an edge rusher because it's like you look at their right now. And it's like the Angel Malone hasn't really developed.

Speaker 11324.86s - 1335.28s

Arnold Leverickety's made strides. But like I don't know if he's that number one edge that i think a lot of people thought he could be uh when he came into the league a couple of years ago and so it's like you got to

Speaker 21335.28s - 1358.22s

get that edge rusher and so for them to go quarterback and then go detackle and then go for like probably what most people thought was like the fourth or fifth best de tackle in the class over the guys that many people thought were like top three guys that was a little bit of a question mark but I liked their scattershot approach because I was just like the edge class is like there's like three guys and then there's a big drop off yeah

Speaker 01358.22s - 1363.44s

you know there's there's some depth at detackle but like you just need to get bodies in that room

Speaker 21363.44s - 1378.62s

and so I was content with once I saw the first four rounds play all but those first two picks sort of caught me for a doozy but the the pinnics pick caught me so much for a doozy that when they traded up for Rooka war I was like okay whatever like they've already done crazy stuff in this draft so nothing can

Speaker 11378.62s - 1384.18s

knock me off balance right now yeah okay that makes sense yeah it's been a fascinating

Speaker 01384.18s - 1385.42s

fan base to kind of,

Speaker 21386.2s - 1391.6s

because it's just you're so unprepared for like, you know, what they did. And it doesn't mean that

Speaker 11391.6s - 1398.28s

it's wrong. It just makes it, it requires more time to marinate and process. Yeah, I think that's

Speaker 21398.28s - 1445.94s

more than fair. Like it took me about a day to get over the Pinnock PERSON's pick. I was like, okay, like, we'll see. You know, because my philosophy with the draft is, like, you're betting today on bets that aren't going to pay off for, like, three years. And, like, Pennix PERSON is, like, the perfect embodiment of that. Like, you know, maybe that pays off in three years. We'll see.And so I was able to get over that relatively quickly, but, like, now that we're, like, two weeks in it, I've been grinding film of him. And, like, I'm starting to like him more as a prospect and then like some of the subtle things about his game. Because before I was just like, yeah, he just throws it deep and he's bad against pressure and like that was basically my opinion of him. And I was like, that can work in the league, but that's a limiting. But starting to see more of him, I'm seeing a little bit more subtle detailsand nuances of his game that I'm starting to like a little bit more.

Speaker 11445.94s - 1475.3s

I think he'll be one of the most exciting players to watch in the preseason this summer because he's just going to grasp the offense. He's going to get a lot of reps. He's, in my opinion, one of the more pro ready quarterbacks in this draft. If he gets to play with the ones, like those guys are really, they fit his style of play when you look at the big-bodied pass catchers. It's going to be interesting to see if like the tune kind of changes on this pickif Michael Pennix has a really hot August.

Speaker 21475.76s - 1480.46s

Yeah, I think that's definitely a possible. I'm personally looking forward to the quarterback controversy

Speaker 11480.46s - 1484.72s

that may be coming because it's just great for the content side of things. Like we can just talk about stuff.

Speaker 21490.9s - 1498.26s

So, you can build cities off of quarterback controversy yes you can and as someone who has covered the new york teams i'm sure it's how i keep my lights on but connor my friend um

as a person who is a hair connoisseur, you know, you and Trevor PERSON have, you know, the greatest hair game on the podcast game at this point in time in terms of the hair rankings. We are going to jump right into summer scouting, probably the beginning of June on NFL Stock Exchange this summer. Well, thank you, Aaron. We are going to jump right into summer scouting, probably the beginning of June on NFL Stock Exchange.I can't promise this year's quarterback class will be as interesting as the one we just had, but the other position groups are going to be really, really fascinating. Honestly, the fact there is no guy in the quarterback class probably makes it more intriguing because everybody's going to want to know the different names. So we'll get through all the position groups in June and July. At NBC ORG, we're still doing the fantasy show once a week, fantasy football, happy hour.Talking dynasty rankings, everything right now, how this draft flipped everything upside down. And then before you know, we will be talking about Michael Panix PERSON preseason football, and I am very here for that. There you go.
