So of course, today we are recapping day two of the 2024 NFL ORG draft for the Atlanta Falcons in which they selected two defensive players up front, you know, which is what we've been clamoring for, you know, so they got the pieces.Could they have gotten more? Okay, we'll talk about it, you know. But, you know, let's talk first about the second round pick, Rook, Aurora PERSON. The Falcons used the, I think the third round pick they got in the Calvin Ridley trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars ORG, that sort of conditional pick that everybody was sweating about,you know, wound up being worthless. Not worthless, but like, you know, it didn't turn into, you know, some high end started. It was part of a trade up in round two, move up eight worthless. Not worthless, but like, you know, it didn't turn into, you know, some high end started. It was part of a trade up in round two, move up eight spots to the beginning of round two, to Nabruk Aurora, to defensive defensive tackle from Clemson ORG. And that kind of started a run on detackles in round two.Three of the four next picks were detackles. And then there were three more guys that picked after where the Falcons originally held that 43rd overall pick. And the Falcons ORG got their guy. Right now, certainly there's a healthy debate on whether or not their guy is the best guy that was available at that point in the draft with Johnny Newton, Illinois and Braden Fiske of Florida State, Chris Jenkins of Michigan, where guys that the Falcons ORG passed on, guys that were higher rated on the consensus draft boards, you know, out there,Arifasan PERSON, our good friend who collated over 100 draft boards, you know, Rook was 68th on that. So 35, that's,you know, maybe a little bit of a reach. But yeah, what else is new with the Atlanta Falcons ORG? So, you know,that's light work. That's a light reach as far as I'm concerned covering this team. So let's talk about Rook PRODUCT as the player, right? Big powerful guy, a case for him versus some of those other guys that the Falcons passed on is, you know, with his frame, with his link, with his power, maybe he's a little bit more of a natural fit as a five tech, three, four defensive endversus, you know, those other guys like Fiske PERSON and Newton that are maybe more that three-tech defensive tackle that in an ideal four-three, you know, you've heard me talk a lot over the years about hybrid fronts and how, you know, three-four, four-three don't really matter all that much. And, you know, it doesn't. And so does that sort of really, you know, move the needle in a major way?Probably not. But we'll give the Falcons ORG the benefit of the doubt. Let's pretend it does matter. And getting a sort of classic three, four defensive in was what they wanted. And they got that. They got a powerful player, good athlete.You know, in this case, you can believe his RAS score, his relative athletic score. I think he was in like a nine-nines at this point when he tested in like the 80th and 90th percentile, pretty much across all the combine metrics for D-tackles. And so, you know, his score, unlike some, maybe some other players that we've talked about this off season, isn't inflated just because he's tall, you know? He's like a legit high-end athlete. You know, Clemson ORG recruits a lot of those guys. I watched a little bit of Rook last year when I was scoutingMiles Murphy and Brian Brissy PERSON, right? You know, and so I saw, you know, some flashes that I liked. I didn't get to really watch a ton of his 2023 tape, but what little I have seen, he kind of reminds me to David on Yamada PERSON, right? You know, very impressive run defender, very strong, powerful, can hold double teams, control the line of scrimmage, right? I think his pass rush isn't quite where David on Yamada PERSON is right now, but, you know, David on Yamada wasn't that guy coming out of Canada when I think the Saints ORG took him in the third round back in like 2016 or whenever that was.So, you know, at least based off what I've seen so far, this patch rush seems a little raw, you know, he's just out there. I'm just a bully. I'm, you know, I'm bigger, stronger, faster than you. That's fine, right? You know, I haven't really seen any pass rush moves in the film I've watched so far, but, you know, obviously I'll watch more film to see if more of that kind of shows up. So I think the expectations for Rook is coming in. He'll be part of the rotation, similar to kind of what we saw was Zach Harrison, what we've seen from Tequan Graham PERSON. I think he's kind of in that same mold of player. You know, similar sort of both of those guys are kind of, you know,big physical, athletic, long, you know, sort of high-end athletes. And so clearly we've seen Terry Fontano PERSON and company sort of keep dipping into that well. And I think it makes total sense, especially given, you know, some of the age that you're dealing with, with, you know, David on Yamada getting up there in age and Grady Jerry getting up there and age. And I've talked to some Volcker PERSON fans that are speculating that, you know, one or both of those guys might not be back next year, you know, after this upcoming season,you know, I'm not ready to go there because I'm just like, who, who are you going to get better than those guys, you know? So pay those guys the $20 million that, you know, is on the books for. So we'll see on that front. But, you know, we those guys the 20 million that you know is on the books for uh so we'll we'll see on that front but um you know we've talked before like you need to start preparing for life after grady jerry and and taking swings like this with graham and harrison and rook PERSON now um you knowtotally makes sense in that regard and this is a guy that if you can kind of you know i was telling jarvis davis earlier today on the locked oned on Sports Atlanta football party reacting to this is like you can kind of take a similar model that we saw last year with Zach Harrison kind of being mentored by Calais Campbell PERSON. And that sort of pay off for the Falcons at the end of last season. You're kind of, you know, I'm kind of envisioning maybe, you know, Root can get that same treatment from David on Yamada PERSON, given some of their similarities. And maybe that pays off for him. Yamada PERSON, given some of their similarities. And maybe that pays off for him.And so he can be a rotational player. I know Clemson ORG kind of moved them all around their defensive front, playing some nose, playing some D-N, playing some D-Tackle. And so, like, you know, he'll, he should be able to find a role at some point in this D-line rotation along with, you know, Harrison and Graham to try to keep Grady Jarrett and try to try to keep David on Yamada PERSON fresher for those passing. You know, as much snaps as he can take on early downs so that those guys can put out their best work on third downs where we know we're definitely going to need those guys to put their best foot forward this upcoming season,given all the question marks we have at the pass rush, you know, I think this is a solid pig even if you felt like, hey, you know, maybe Johnny Newton PERSON or a solid pick, even if you felt like, hey, you know, maybe Johnny Newton or Braden Fis PERSON could take some of the pressure off of Grady and David on Yamada to be those difference makers on third downs, given that there may be a little bit more polished patch rush.So it's fair, I think, to criticize the pick and criticize the tradeup, we'll talk a little bit more about, you know, whether the trade op was worth it at the end of today's episode, but I do want to talk a little bit more about the Falcons third round pick, right? This was Brayland Trice, the edge rusher, out of Washington ORG. And so, hey, the Falcons ORG added an edge rusher. We've been talking all offseason about, hey, when are we going to get that edge rush? When are you going to get that edge rush?Well, they got somebody today, right? And, you know, if you go back to early January, I guess it was, the late December, whatever it was, uh, Trice PERSON's stock was red hot back then, right? He had a dominant game against Texas GPE in the playoffs,playing for Washington ORG. And then he had a pretty quiet game against Michigan ORG. And I think his stock kind of cooled a little bit there. And so it'll be interesting to go back and revisit the film. You know, obviously I watched the games live. Um be interesting to go back and revisit the film you know obviously i watched the games live um but to go back and revisit the film and and look at why he was sodominant against a good texas offensive line that has you know a couple of guys that maybe you know high picks or a left tackle that may be a high pick next year uh and why he was quiet against michigan it's sort of like hey this is one of these games is kind of the floor. One of these games is kind of the ceiling for him. So we'll see about that. If you're curious where he fits on the consensus board, he was 64. So he was a little rated higher.People seem to like him a little bit more than they liked Rook Aurora PERSON. But sort of similar tier of player as sort of those late two, early three type of prospects. And, you know, he's a big edge. He's kind of a bully from what I've seen. We'll love to go back and watch the film to see if there's maybe a little bit more finesse to his game that I'm missing. But, you know, I remember watching him during the fall and feeling like, man, this guy is a great fit in the Ryan Nielsen PERSON defense.As that sort of four three in that Ryan Nielsen PERSON loves, you know, a guy that has length and can, you know, just get physical, you know, kind of similar to Marcus Davenport PERSON in that regard, which we saw, you know, the Saints trading up for in round one, you know, Trice isn't on that level as an athlete as Davenport PERSON to merit that high pick. But kind of a similar type of player, if you ask me. But, you know, with Ryan Nielsen being gone and the Foxalkins moving to a three, four, you know, you wonder alittle bit if you're going to like twice as much on the edge, right? You know, he doesn't necessarily have the bend. He doesn't necessarily have the change of direction that you ideally want in terms of his ability to drop in the coverage. Now, he was listed at 275 at Washington ORG, and he used that effectively. They've got he used that effectively. There's got to be that bully. Then he kind of slimmed down the 245 for the combine and try to run a fast 40. He didn't really run a fast forward.He ran like a 472 type of 40, which is, you know, perfectly fine, you know, for like a linebacker, but isn't necessarily going to be like, hey, man, that guy's got real juice off the edge, you know, that type of player. And then he was back at around 260 for his pro day. And, of course, didn't run at that weight. So I think he'll probably be a little bit more in that 260, 265 range at the next level. That probably feels like a comfortable weight for him.And it's probably actual speed at that weight is probably closer to like 4-9 than it is, you know, a 4-7 or something like that. But he's not necessarily a guy that all that to illustrate. He's not necessarily a guy that you're going to want to sort of play in space a ton and drop in the coverage. You want him going forward, right? And so I could see that ability to go forward leading to Trice PERSON kind of getting some early run,maybe even as a starter, not necessarily a starter in the sense he's playing, you know, 60% of the snaps, but started as, you know, starting games playing in the base defense just because he's going to be able to hold up against the run a lot more, right? And that run defensive ability is still kind of a question mark with Arnold Leverickety and D. Njimlo. We had those questions with those guys two years ago when they came out of school. And so far, we haven't necessarily seen it blossom. That was a big reason why they were not gettingas many snaps last year as I think Falcon ORG fans were hoping from those guys just because a lot of what Ryan Nielsen wants to do defensive. We talked about it a ton last year was he's going to play with light boxes so that he can keep that safety out of the box so he can play deep. And so you need, you know, more physical guys to kind of deal with the sort of numbers advantage that the offense is potentially going to have if you're only going to have, you know, six and rarely more than seven guys in the box to play the run. And Trice PERSON fits into that.That's basically what I'm saying. And, you know, that's a question on whether or not that's going to be something that, you know, Jimmy Lake PERSON and Rahim Morris do, speaking of Jimmy Lake, obviously, Jimmy Lake was the D.C. in Washington when Trice was recruited, you know, Trice's career kind of blossomed after Jimmy Lake was fired as the head coach there. But, you know, one of the questions is like, what are the Falcons ORG going to, you know, that's why, like, we talk about three, four, verse four, three. It's not really what that's all about. Like, again, that, that matters a littlecons going to, you know, that's why like we talk about three, four versus four three.It's not really what that's all about. Like again, that matters a little bit, but not to the degree that I think people make. It's really about like, what are you doing the coverage?What are you doing on back in, right? Is that second safety? Is he playing deep, right? And if he's playing deep, right? And a lot of cover two,cover four type of things, cover six type of stuff, right? You know, then you need more butt kickers up front, you know, with those lighter boxes. But if you're going to play, you're going to drop that safety into the box so that he canbe that eighth defender in the box and that's going to help you stop the run, you know, playing more cover three, cover one type of stuff, you know, then maybe Trice PERSON isn't fit. And so I think the fact that the Falcons like Trice PERSON kind of tells you that they're maybe looking for having that safety play a little bit deeper than necessarily be a true box safety. But again, maybe the Falcons raft of safety tomorrow that we're sitting here going like that. That fits the box safety type of then.But we'll talk about that a little bit more later. So, you know, I'll eagerly go back through the film to watch Trice PERSON to see sort of what exactly, you know, his film is, is sort of a similar conversation that we had last year with Zach Harrison PERSON. Like I watched a little bit of Zach Harrison PERSON. I was kind of mixed on him.But as I went back after the draft and watched more of him, I gained a newfound appreciation for Zach Harrison's PERSON game. And hopefully it's the same thing with Brooke and Braylin Trice PERSON, having watched a little bit of film of these guys, you know, I understand sort of the basic of what they are. But we'll see, you know, over the coming weeks as we pour through the film, sort of, you know, if their stock goes up or, you know, it sort of levels out or goes down. We'll see how that goes. But my general impression, at least at this point in time, you know, he's probably going to be more of that power rush or that bull rusher that typically translates more into a pressure guy, right, as opposed to a guythat's going to rack up a ton of sacks. So in terms of like really moving the needle for this Falcon ORG's bash rush, or we're obsessed with sacks at this point in time right now, the collective unit at this point in time, not counting the rookies is looking at about like 31 sacks from last year. So, you know, every little sack that we can get at this point in time that, you know, 31, I think would be like bottom two, bottom three in the NFL last year. So, you know, every little sack that we can get at this point in time.But I think sort of projecting at least my preliminary sort of look at Trice PERSON is he's more of that four to six sack guy that kind of maxes out. And I think in a lot of ways, he kind of is a similar player to Bud Dupree PERSON. You know, the main difference is he's making like 70% you know, less money than what we paid Bud Dupree last year and obviously is as much younger player. So, you know, I think it's a good move.Obviously, it's not going to necessarily, you know, change the narrative in terms of the Falcons ORG pass rush. But, you know, we've been talking all off season long that, like, the only thing that they would possibly could have done that would, would maybe, you know, we've been talking all off season long. Like, the only thing that they would possibly could have done that would maybe, you know, hitting on on that first round pick. But we all saw that ship sale the other day. So, you know, I'm making peace with Brayland Trice PERSON of like, hey, you know, as far as day twobets that you can make in terms of improving the pass rush, this is probably one of the better bets that the Falcons ORG could have made at this point in the draft. So we'll talk a little bit more about, you know, whether the bet that the Falcons ORG are making in terms of trading up in the draft was the right move, right? And sort of what's also in store for day three?Like are the Falcons ORG going to get a cornerback? Where's that secondary help? So we are wrapping up today's day two recap, and of course tomorrow we'll be coming with a day three recap and then I guess we'll be doing an overall draft review and we'll probably get into the opportunity cost conversation on probably Sunday night here on YouTube and Monday on whatever your preferred podcast platform, which is going to be the buzzword this year. Like, positional value was the buzzword last year when it came to Bijan GPE. And so that's going to be something worth revisiting. But, you know, that'sfor future conversations. We'll live in the present. And let's talk about the trade-up, right? You know, again, the criticism the Falcons ORG are going to have is reaching on players and did they need to trade up for a Rook and all that stuff. right? You know, again, the criticism the Falcons ORG are going to have is reaching on players and did they need to trade-up for Rook PRODUCT and all that stuff.And, you know, the question is maybe they needed a trade-up, right? Clearly, the Falcons had intel that detackles were going to go early in round two, and they did. And, you know, they felt like, you know, we're not convinced Rook PRODUCT is going to be there when we're, if we stick and pick at 43, so they went and got their guy. And, you know, the general rule on trade-ups is, you know, in general, it's probably not the best strategy just because overwhelmingly the data from many people that have studied the draft basically tell you that your ability to evaluate playersis not probably as good as you think it is, right? You're all at the end of the day, I've said this before, like you're just guessing, right? Maybe you're making educated guesses, you know, at the end of the day, like drafting is, you're just making bets, right? And like, some bets are better than others, right? And your ability to be like, oh, this, this bet is definitely going to hit, probably is not true. You're lying to yourself. And, and so essentially,it boils down to, you know, get as many swings of the bat because that's going to be the thing that is going to increase your hit rate more so than anything. You know, basically that baseball analogy is like, you know, your batting average is probably 250. And, you know, any given NFL ORG team is probably not straying that far from 250 above or below, right? You know, maybe some teams bat 275, maybe some team bat 225,but, you know, the difference in those batting averages really only stand out over the course of like 40 at bats. And so the more at bat you get, the more likely you it is that you're going to get, you know,maybe a few more hits than the team that you're going to face and obviously that's going to give you the competitive advantage. But that's the general rule of thumb. So I think it's more than fair to criticize the Falcons ORG for trading up just because on principle, trading up is generally not something that you should do. But, you know, the Falcons ORG did it.You know, I expected them to be aggressive today. Terry basically said it in the post Michael Pinnock's PERSON presser, you know, saying we're going to be aggressive with the defense and then try to walk it back. I'm like, oh, in offense too. But it's like, Tara PERSON, we know. We know you got to go defense. You have to go defense. And, you know, the fact of the last couple of years, the Falcons have traded up in round two for Arnold DeBacetti PERSON and Matthew Bergeron, to me basically like, okay, they're probably going to trade up again. And I made peacewith it, you know, ideally I was kind of the to trade up again. And I made peace with it. Ideally, I was kind of the ideal trade-up situation, given that it felt like it was probably going to come was, you know, maybe stick and pick at 43 and then use maybe your two-thirds to move back into the back end of round two, maybe to get to like pick 50 or something like that. So you can have sort of two picks in the middle of the second round as a way to maximize it, as opposed to getting a pick at the beginning of the second round and then at the middle of the thirdround. So that was kind of the vision I had. But, you know, again, who knows? It takes two to tango, all that sort of stuff. So, you know, you guys know my motto. Set your expectations low when it comes to the Atlanta Falcons ORG and you'll never be disappointed. So that's basically what I went to do. It's like they're probably going to trade up. I'm probably not going to like it. But as long as they get good players like at the end of the day, what am I going to complain about?And they got two players on the defensive front, right? We talked about this with Jarvis Davis PERSON, right? You know, I want to see them take multiple bites to improve this defense front. I want to see this team invest the resources to really make this, you know,defense front better. And they did that, right? I can't be mad at the football team for trying to make the team better, right? You know, that's kind of how I sort of view it. So, you know, that being said, overall, it's not necessarily a blow you away type of draft through the two days.Maybe things get better on day three. And, you know, they were able to get a six-round pick back in that trade with Arizona at the beginning of round two. So now they have pick 186, 187 and 197. So we'll probably see a flurry of guys go in round six that can sort of shore up some depth in some key areas, maybe on the offensive line, you know, they, we've talked about it all of the C-Long. They need depth pretty much everywhere. Like, you know, at this point, the only position that they don't need depth is quarterback.Right. And it's like pretty much every other position is up for grabs. So as long as you get good players, you know, I'm not going to complain too much. Let's say too much. You know, you guys know, I'll find a way to complain a little bit. But, you know, they also have that fourth and fifth round pick, pick 109 and 143 respectively.And, you know, I'm sure a lot of people who are wondering, you know, where's the secondary, right? Where's the help in the secondary, right? We talked about this defense potentially, uh, needing, you know, two starters in the secondary at corner and, and safety. Now, I'm not as disappointed with the lack of secondary picks so far, um, just because, you know, I wasn't like enamored with taking the corner as so many othershave been these last couple of years, you know, pushing for the, hey, let's use one of these top ten picks on the corner. I'm just like, all right. You know, I'm not as worried as other people are about, you know, AJ Terrell, his long-term future in Atlanta. You know, again, if the Falcons want to let AJ Terrell PERSON walk in free agencybecause they're unwilling to pay, I don't know, $19 million a year because they're like, well, he's only worth $15 million. Like, okay, good luck, guys. That's a, you know, I don't know if that's a good plan, but hey, you know, you don't have too many guys under the age of 30. Other than it's Jesse Bates and it's AJ Terrell PERSON. And you're going to let that guy walk out the door just because like, I don't know if I feel like paying him.You know, I want to pay, I want to save, you know, three million dollars, you know,like, all right, good luck with that. So I, you know, as naive as it sounds at this point,you know, I refuse to believe that the pockets are that stupid to let, you know, one of the few, you know, studs that they've drafted over the last couple of years,just walk out the door just to save a couple of bucks at a position where, you know, it has been, they have had very little stability. And it's like he's the one stable thing that they've had at that position for the last five years. And it's like, you're going to let him walk. So that's why, like, to me, the cornerback need is not as pressing as other people think like oh we need to get an insurance policy in case a j tarrell PERSON walks do they do we need that i mean if if a j tarrell's gone then you know boy we got we got we got so many we got so many problems so i don't i don't think it's evergoing to get to that so that's part of the reason why like to me like cornerback has not been as pressing a need. Like you need an upgrade at CB2 ORG. I think you can still have an opportunity to get some of those guys. I haven't really looked at the board to see who's available who, you know, again, as I say, set your expectations low and the Falcons ORG will never disappoint you. So you sit there. I know T.J. Tampa, I think is out there, the Iowa State ORG corner.And a lot of people thought was going to go around too. But I sit here and I go like, you know, I'm not going to sit here and have expectation for them to land a corner. So I can be disappointed. No, I'm going to be like, they're not going to draft the corner at all so that when they do draft the quarter, I can be like, oh, good job, Falcons ORG, right? You know, and then the safety position is a position. We talked about this earlier this month. Like, that's a position that theypossibly could put on, right? We talked about how the safety class isn't great this year. You know, there's like seven good guys. I think four of those guys have already been drafted, if I'm not mistaken. And like next year's safety class, maybe a little bit better, right? We talked with Max Chadwick of PFF earlier this offseason, and he basically said that. And you got Richie Grant PERSON for one year. I'm not as down on Richie Grant as the rest of the fan base is. Like I think he's a perfectly okay starter.Like not good, but like he's functional. Maybe, maybe, you know, with Jimmy Lake and Rahim and another year of Jerry Gray PERSON and Justin Hood and all those guys that maybe we get better production out of him in a contract year,especially now that he'll be motivated because it's like, this is my last shot here to show that I belong in this league. And so, you know, the idea of running it back with Richard Grant PERSON is to me not the worst idea in the world. I've seen worst ideas from the Atlanta Falcons ORG, right?So, like I sit here and I go, if they take a safety, great. If they don't, all right,you know, I'm not losing any sleep over it.
