Joining me today, as always is Landon McCool PERSON. You can follow him on Twitter at McCool PERSON, BCB.On today's show, we are taking a look at three of the top undrafted free agents that the Cowboys signed after the 2024 NFL ORG draft. And just off the top, Landon PERSON, I got to say this is a weaker class than what I think we are used to seeing from the Cowboys ORG. Yeah.

Speaker 3150.78s - 209.48s

And honestly, I would say that this is a weaker class across the league, right? Because of everything that's happened with the COVID years and the extra extensions that this group got. I mean, the last three years has been so kind of wonky with talent because, you know, the kind of push and pull of people taking the extra COVID year, you know, fourth and fifth year seniors. So what it's ended up doing is draining this yearspecifically undrafted free agent class, right? Like because guys ended up even getting a year early, they got an extra year. And by the time the kind of class got down to the sixth and seventh round, it was pretty slim pickets. So I think what you see is a lot of guys that normally would be undrafted free agents getting selected in the six and seventh round. So yeah, I do agree that it is kind of a weaker class. But I think it's something, it's more to do with the class being weak overall as opposed to the Cowboys ORG,specifically struggling to sign folks. All right,

Speaker 2209.48s - 213.96s

let's start with the first, the biggest of the signings that we had, and that's a,

Speaker 3214.42s - 214.78s

yeah,

Speaker 2214.78s - 221.82s

I don't know, well, literally, figuratively. Uh, it's a tight end from Minnesota ORG, Brevin,Span Ford. What did you see when you turned on his tape?

Speaker 3222.34s - 258.5s

This guy's very raw. You know, he is a, he's kind of, uh, what you would expect from an old school kind of raw tied end, right? Uh, he is big body.Like, look at those numbers. He's 6,6 plus. He's 260, you know, at the combine. So like that he really probably was paying closer to 265. Uh, he's got, you know, good arm linked. He's got big hands.Uh, and he's got all the kind of, you know, elements that you want for a tight end in the NFL ORG. Now, he doesn't have, you know, elite speed. You know, as you see here, he's a 477 guy. Doesn't necessarily have.

Speaker 2258.52s - 259.06s

Faster than Jake Ferguson.

Speaker 3259.56s - 264.14s

But I don't know that he's quite still the kind of athlete.

Speaker 2264.42s - 268.3s

He doesn't play. Ferguson PERSON plays so much more athletically than.

Speaker 3268.38s - 299.18s

Yeah. And this guy, you know, it's one of those things, too, where he's like, he's really raw in a lot of different ways, right? Like, even the, the, the selling point for this guy that the top line for this guy is a developmental run blocker who could eventually maybe be a very solid tied in two or three right uh i think that where he has the most work to do is as a as a receiver uh he to me he is not a natural catcher of the football like the actual art

Speaker 2299.18s - 305.5s

of receiving i don't know how can i push back back that on a little bit? Please, please.

Speaker 3310.74s - 310.82s

Because I think if you watch only his 2023 tape, you're 100% right.

Speaker 2313.32s - 313.4s

I mean, he had nine drops according to Dane Bruehler in the Beast.

Speaker 3314.74s - 323.18s

I mean, it was horrendous. But if you watch some of his early stuff like 2021 and 2022, I mean, nobody's going to confuse him from Rob Grankowski PERSON or anything like that.

Speaker 2323.3s - 365.2s

But there were several times on his tape. Like he would make an unbelievable contested catch on the back, you know, on his back shoulder with a guy draped all over him. I have no idea what happened last year. Like he,as a receiver, he looked significantly worse than he did the first two years or the last two years. I don't know what happened. I just want to point that. And even the PFF grades agree. If you're looking with us on YouTube ORG right now, you see the percentile, right?16th percentile receiving grade from 2021 to 2023. If you remove the 2023 season, that's like in the 90th percentile. But he was atrocious this year and it brought that grade way, way down.

Speaker 3366.88s - 380.64s

Yeah, I mean, honestly, the drop numbers was not something I was aware of. To me, when I watch him on tape, and again, you're right, I have only watched this year's tape. It looks like he's not natural receiving the football, you know?

Speaker 2380.84s - 396.42s

Which is so weird. He's fighting the football, a lot of the times when he's catching it. And there's definitely times when you see it, too too on tape where he's a big body and he's getting hit as he's catching the football. And he can definitely hold on to the football even when being hit.

Speaker 3396.84s - 458.38s

It's more the, you know, when he's on the run, can he, you know, contort his body and then get his hands where he needs to and and you know bring bring allow a soft landing for the football and then bringing in like that's where it just looks unnatural compared to when he's trying to move bodies now the other element side of this too is that you know the the kind of top line like i mentioned is that this is a blocking tight in but he's not ready to block in the NFL ORG right now.Like, he's still, like, is learning that aspect of the game as well. His technique is, you know, not perfect. He's a big body, and he's got strength, and he can move folks. And I think that that's something that you can't teach. And that's why he was so highly regarded, I think, because these types of tied-ins that come into the NFL ORG with sort of ready-made strength is pretty rare, right? And especially to kind of get that guy in the undrafted free agency, it's pretty rare. But there is a lot of work left to be done with this guy.

Speaker 0458.38s - 468.08s

And I feel like he is a, you know, very much a project at tight end that's going to need at least a year plus to kind of

Speaker 3468.08s - 475.5s

get to a point where he's going to be useful as a tight in three or, or two in an offense for the Cowboys ORG.

Speaker 2477.36s - 490.5s

All right, Lan, so let me ask you about his role in the NFL ORG. How do you think his game is going to translate to the Cowboys ORG? Do you believe this is somebody that can make the roster as a rookie? I think it's going to be tough.

Speaker 3490.86s - 535.76s

You know, I mean, you know, it's funny because on Twitter, I've been seeing a bunch of people talking about like, Hindershot PERSON better watch out and, you know, these guys, this guy's going to take jobs. I think he may be a little bit further away than that, right? Like, I think, you know, if hinder shot can get,you can put on the field right now in a certain couple different roles. And, you know, look, maybe he's disappointed us that he's not what we expected after his first year of exposure in the Cowboys ORG offense. But I just have a hard time seeing Spanford PERSON kind of being a regular contributor soon in this offense. Like he just, there's a lot to his game that still needs to be developed for, you know, you'd feel comfortable putting him out there as a blocker or as a receiver, I would think.

Speaker 2536.2s - 542.06s

See, I think he is going to make the 53 man roster because I think he can block in line.

Speaker 3542.06s - 547.62s

And I just don't know after Jake Ferguson and after Luke Schoonmaker PERSON, like,

Speaker 2548.04s - 570s

would you rather have Peyton Hender Shots's PERSON versatility or would you rather have Span Ford's PERSON ability to block in line? And I just have a feeling the Cowboys are going to prefer, first of all, the guy that has more years left on his on his deal and the guy that maybe has a little bit bigger of a body with more power, even if he's a little bit raw. So I do think he's going to make the 53-man roster.

Speaker 3570.64s - 577.36s

I see him as a guy that they're constantly trying to shield.

Speaker 2577.8s - 582.62s

Maybe he makes the initial 53-man roster gets cut and he spends the rest of the season

Speaker 3582.62s - 608.7s

on practice squad, and then he gets his call up call ups for a couple games i could see that i just you know i have a like even if hinder shot isn't on this team next year i i would have a hard time like feeling like he's reliable enough to be part of the game day roster as opposed to a guy that i have on the practice squad that i call up a couple times um we'll see i think that's going to be part of the game day roster as opposed to a guy that I have on the practice squad that I call up a couple different times. We'll see.

Speaker 2608.86s - 628.32s

I think that's going to be a really interesting battle after Ferguson, after Schoonmaker PERSON, who makes the team as that third tight end? Is it Hennershot PERSON? Is it John Stevens who was going to make the 53 main roster last year? Or is it span forward? We shall see.I want to talk about a running back who I know at least is intriguing to you,

Speaker 0628.7s - 630.78s

to put it nicely.

Speaker 1630.78s - 633.4s

Let's talk about Nathaniel Pete PERSON next.

Speaker 0636.68s - 639.9s

This episode is brought to you by Fanduil ORG.

All right, Lana, the Cowboys only signed one free agent running back. They did not draft the running back. So that means we get to talk about Nathaniel Pete PERSON at length. What did you see when you watch this tape?

Speaker 3739.62s - 778.16s

Well, it's a real tale of two cities with this kid, right? You know, he comes, he's from Missouri ORG. He comes out of college and was, I think, you know, one of the highly ranked running backs out of the state of Missouri ends up going to Stanford ORG of all places. Freshman year, because of some injuries and some other stuff, ends up becoming the kind of primary runner at Stanford and had a pretty decent little career there. And, you know had I think he had something like 600 yards rushing and and I think he still potentially holds the the record for the longest rushing touchdown in Stanford ORG history or or one of the longest ones he had an 87 yards yeah

Speaker 1778.16s - 784.82s

yeah and and I think what you see is a guy that's very similar to kind of what you're seeing on

Speaker 0784.82s - 785.44s

the razz here is that this is a guy who's very similar to kind of what you're seeing on the RAS here,

Speaker 2785.44s - 791.2s

is that this is a guy who's explosive and it can move a little bit, that 4-5-1,

Speaker 0791.36s - 793.4s

that's the estimated 40 time there.

Speaker 3793.7s - 841.78s

Apparently he ran a 4-3-2 or a 4-34, depending on who you ask, at Missouri Pro Day ORG. So, like, the guy can run, but I also think that that 10-yard split kind of beliles, you know, some of his other issues, right? Is that it's a little bit of a build-up speed, right? Yeah. And so he's, and he has some explosiveness. I mean, you can tell by the vertical and broad there. But when he's trying to get through the hole, it can take a little bit of time. And I think what you see is that he may be a better man gap, you know, kind of power scheme guy than he is a, you know, put your foot in the ground in the wide zone scheme. And I think that kind of played itself out a little bit at Missouri ORG, right? He, he transfers to Missouri ORG. I still think it's probably because he just wanted to graduate closer to home, maybe.

Speaker 0842.34s - 850.2s

He got the opportunity to be the starter right away at Missouri ORG, had some kind of mixed results, including, you know, as an Auburn ORG Tiger fan,

Speaker 3850.2s - 912.76s

I talked about the fact that he famously fumble lost the game against Auburn ORG in an overtime game in which he was trying to die for the pylon and fumbled the ball in overtime out of the back of the end zone, basically ending the game. And a couple of other series of fumbles and kind of miscuesthat finally resulted in by the fourth or fifth game of his senior season, basically having all his touches taken away. And given to the other running back at Missouri ORG, who I can't remember off the top of his name with this, touch with an S, but he ended up being like the leading rusher in the SEC after this and was they were basically a completely a wide zone scheme so yeah I mean it's justa very weird kind of of of of a pathway to go from starter as a freshman and like this kind of phenom and and Stanford ORG to transferring to Missouri where you basically are benched before the end of your senior year. He's tough to figure out because.

Speaker 2912.76s - 913.48s

Really tough.

Speaker 3914.04s - 915.44s

Because you could see it.

Speaker 2915.56s - 919.54s

Like I watched mostly his Stanford tape, which was 2021.

Speaker 3920.54s - 924.48s

I mean, like he would have an unbelievable cut and then would break off a defender.

Speaker 2925.08s - 927.22s

And then he would try like one too many moves.

Speaker 3927.66s - 930.02s

He's twirling, twirling, twirling to a freedom.

Speaker 2930.26s - 944.62s

Yeah. Exactly. And it would negate all this great stuff that he did ahead of time. But what's interesting to me is like he really doesn't have that much college production, he doesn't have that much of a college workload. No.

Speaker 3944.62s - 961.48s

Even if you look at the snaps, like for as many years that he was in college football I think he played like 700 career snaps which is not that many there's clearly talent here i've got no doubt that he's a talented player it's just to me it doesn't look like he is a very

Speaker 2961.48s - 991.78s

mature runner like it's you know how sometimes like these really good high school kids will come into college and like, they'll think they can outrun everybody to the sideline. Or they can string together three, four moves. You just can't do that, especially in the NFL ORG. You've got to make one cut and then go. And that's your move. I am interested here because you can tell that there's talent. The explosiveness is off the charts. And if you're watching with us on YouTube ORG right now,41 inch vertical and then there's a 10-8 broad jump.

Speaker 3991.78s - 999.14s

Both of those numbers are in the 98th percentile or 98th percentile, 96 percentile. Like he is an explosive athlete,

Speaker 2999.46s - 1011.3s

but he doesn't have the startup speed. You're right. Like he is a buildup speed runner. And it's just a really interesting body type, an interesting style for an SEC ORG running back.

Speaker 31011.94s - 1015.18s

He's compact Darren McFadden PERSON, right?

Speaker 21015.18s - 1024.32s

Like where in a sense that he needs that runway to get going a little bit, he's probably not going to be a great zone runner because I think what's the,

Speaker 31024.32s - 1043.08s

what you're struggling to what you're struggling to kind of quantify as his problem is to me instincts I don't think he has any instincts like I don't think he has any running back instincts or understanding of like that kind of predate natural ability to see the shifting lines like in front of you he doesn't anticipate

Speaker 21043.08s - 1046.02s

anything that's coming no no no he's got to see the hole

Speaker 01046.02s - 1082.76s

And then he'll get through it. And that's what it is, right? Is that he, that's why I think he struggles in zone schemes, right? Is that it is very simple, but you also have to kind of feel how the, the hole is developing and then get through. If you pull a guy in front of him and you downblock and create a hole, he'll get through that. Like, you know what I'm saying? That's why I think he's more of a man gapkind of guy. The other issue is, is the hand stuff, right? The fumbling, the, you know, he has small hands. I think he's eight and a half inch hands. And he fumbles a lot at times. So there are like,

Speaker 31082.76s - 1155.58s

you know, very fundamental running back issues with him, but him with the ball in his hands is explosive. Like, and I think beyond that, too, the other thing that we haven't really mentioned is that not only is the running back, he's a very good kick returner and punt returner, but on top of that, he played a lot of special teams at Stanford ORG, like as a, not just as a kick and punt returner, but as a gunner and other things as well.So I think that's something that really appeals to the Cowboys ORG as well is the fact that potentially get some special teams usage out of him as well. Yeah, I just, it's interesting to see a guy who is the juice. That's like the undrafted free agent, right? Because he has the juice, but it's like, it's, yeah, you could easily see you turn around handing the balland then him running right into the butt of your offensive linemen and then going, oh, and then getting tackled for a loss or slowing down his feet while he waits for a hole to develop and then a lineback are getting through the line of scrimmage of tackle him. So I think that that's where that kind of second nature ability to get away from people to keep his feet clean away from trash. Like all that stuff is still not, you know, natural to him.

Speaker 21155.92s - 1157s

I've got a cop for you.

Speaker 31157.06s - 1159.38s

And then I want to ask you what you think his role is going to be in the NFL ORG.

Speaker 21159.96s - 1163.12s

He reminds me a lot of another former cowboy, briefly.

Speaker 31163.24s - 1164.5s

Oh, dude. I just thought of it.

Speaker 21164.56s - 1167.38s

I just came up in a name. Is it Christine Michael PERSON?

Speaker 31167.66s - 1168.68s

No, you know what?

Speaker 21168.7s - 1171.3s

That's funny because that was one of the ones I wrote down. So that one's good.

Speaker 31171.6s - 1174.66s

But a different former cowboy who played in the Big 12 ORG.

Speaker 21175.46s - 1177.58s

Lake Seastrunk LOC. Do you remember Lake Steastrunk FAC?

Speaker 31177.58s - 1179.84s

Oh, yeah. Of course.

Speaker 21180.26s - 1216.42s

I'm looking at Seastrug LOC stuff right now on mock draftable. 451, 40-yard dash, 41-5 inch vertical,, 134-inch broad jump, 5-9, 200 pounds. If you remember at Baylor ORG, like put up huge numbers at Baylor, but he got to the NFL ORG and it was just no instincts at all. And it's the reason why he bounced around a million different teams, despite being that talented.I think Nathaniel Pete PERSON's got a little bit of that in him. But I'm hopeful that when he plays behind a better offensive line and he's not just the center of attention for every opposing defense, maybe there's something here. Yeah.

Speaker 31216.48s - 1251.94s

I mean, I think the idea is let's get him the ball and some space to see what he can do with it. Let's give him a couple of carries with some schemes that fit his play style. Maybe he can do do with it. Let's give him a couple of carries with some schemes that that fit his play style. Maybe he can do something with it. And, you know, that combined with the fact that he has some special teams background, maybe that's enough to kind of cobble together. Again, another kind of practice squad guy that, you know, you'll use up all his call-ups. And he becomes a guy that is a valuable special teams component who can maybe give you a carrier too if you want to kind of change it up in the game. So I think that that would be a good goal for Nathaniel Pete PERSON.All right. Let's talk about a defensive player.

Speaker 21252.04s - 1351.94s

The Cowboys ORG did not do a great job of loading up talent and undrafted free agency on defense. But there is one linebacker that I think is at least somewhat intriguing. We will get to him next. This episode is brought to you by Monopoly Go PRODUCT. All right, game off. We are discussing three undrafted free agent signings that the Cowboys ORG made. And our final one here is Jason Johnson, a linebacker from UCF ORG. Lanham PERSON, what did you see here?

Speaker 31353.14s - 1393.02s

Yeah, so it's a guy that looks like he's going to be a special teams player for sure. He's, you know, you see that here, not super athletic linebackers don't get drafted, right? But I think this guy has some good instincts to him. He can take on blocks. He's not afraid to get physical. You know, I think he's just a limited athlete, but he's got good upside in the sense that he's a smart player, it seems like. He was a dot guy for UCF ORG.Clearly, you know, he was the defense of MVP at the Hula Bowl EVENT, which is, you know,

Speaker 01393.02s - 1394.64s

the Hulah Bowl EVENT is an interesting situation, right?

Speaker 31394.64s - 1404.26s

Because it takes place in Orlando, which is funny because it's called the Hulah Bowl EVENT. But it also features a ton of UCF ORG players because they're trying to get people.

Speaker 21404.8s - 1407.64s

Yeah, well, and they're trying to get people to go to the game, right?

Speaker 01407.7s - 1412.88s

And so the best way to get people to go to the game is have the local team super populated

Speaker 31412.88s - 1443.62s

into the bowl so that local fans will show up to the game, right? But even having said that, he had a really good game there. He was the guy that was, you know, calling the plays. It seemed like he had the play wrist on. And he had a good game. He was able to make a bunch of tackles.I think for the most part, you know, he is, he's going to be kind of a guy who is a contributor. He's going to be a solid player. That mistackle percentage is like, you know, that's probably part of the reason he's

Speaker 21443.62s - 1445.26s

number one in the country. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 31445.26s - 1451.72s

He had the lowest mistackle rate of any player, not just linebacker, any player in college football last year, which is impressive.

Speaker 21452.1s - 1454.2s

Which is probably why the Cowboys ORG liked him.

Speaker 31454.3s - 1455.7s

You're bringing a guy in.

Speaker 01456.1s - 1458.46s

Can he play on special teams and can he make a bunch of tackles?

Speaker 31458.6s - 1462.28s

Sure. We'll figure out everything else. We'll figure out a way for him to make the defense.

Speaker 21463s - 1468.18s

But if you can play on special teams and make tackles and don't miss them, you're going to have a role in the NFL ORG.

Speaker 31468.8s - 1468.9s

Yeah.

Speaker 21469.06s - 1480.38s

And he's good enough athlete, not like, you know, he certainly is good enough athlete for what he's, this looks is very poor. But again, these are all, you know, numbers of players that are in the NFL ORG, right?

Speaker 31480.5s - 1483s

This is a lot of it is because of the size.

Speaker 21483.14s - 1486.9s

He's just over six foot, 228 pounds.

Speaker 31487.44s - 1491.54s

465 is not fast. Certainly not slow, though, either.

Speaker 01491.7s - 1496.9s

It's more than fine for a special teamer. The shuttle and the three cone are less than ideal.

Speaker 21496.9s - 1508.22s

451 shuttle 7383.3. But again, this is the reason why you're getting him as an undrafted free agent because he's not the biggest, not the fastest, but does make a lot of tackles.

Speaker 31508.44s - 1538.94s

And he's a solid player, skilled player. I mean, I watched an interview with him. And he seems like he's a really smart, heady guy. Like he's got his head on straight. He's a hard worker. He's an underdog type. You know, he's coming from a smaller, a little bit of a smaller school, you know, and trying to make it into the NFL ORG. You know, so, you know, you root for these guys, but obviously, like, these guys, they get it, they get in on their skill set. They get in on their, what's between their ears, not so much like

Speaker 01538.94s - 1552.48s

their explosive athleticism. If they had that, they would have been drafted and they would have, you know, been picked up earlier. So this is a dart throw for a guy that loves football that is a solid tackler, that maybe you can get some special teams of teams prowess.

Speaker 31552.48s - 1558.34s

And again, you know, a practice squad guy who you kind of hope to keep into your roster.

Speaker 01558.8s - 1572.62s

And for his career sake, he hopes to hang around the Cowboys for an entire season. And then maybe, you then maybe after his rookie year see what he can do with a leap and then maybe make a pursuit into trying to actually make the roster next year.

Speaker 21572.78s - 1585.42s

The last thing before we go, you had to rank these three players in terms of how you think, the odds of them making the roster, how would you rank them? I think we should talk about this too a little bit.

Speaker 31585.5s - 1596.26s

Like what are we referring to when we say making the roster? Are we talking about the 53 man, because the truth is is that the NFL ORG has really made this difficult now that everything's been expanded. They view rosters differently.

Speaker 21596.56s - 1599.24s

Okay. Let's say play the most snaps this year.

Speaker 31599.5s - 1599.8s

Okay.

Speaker 21603.52s - 1604.42s

I would go.

Speaker 31604.88s - 1608.78s

I would say Brevin Spade PERSON. I would honestly go the way that it is right now, probably, right?

Speaker 21608.86s - 1612.22s

Because I think obviously you paid Brevin Spanford PERSON a lot of money.

Speaker 31612.48s - 1616.86s

So you got to have an idea like if you want to continue this project at a certain point.

Speaker 21616.96s - 1625.3s

And I think, look, Spanford PERSON is raw, but he's not like so raw that putting him out there for a couple snaps on goal line or in special packages.

Speaker 31625.46s - 1626.2s

It's not going to hurt you.

Speaker 21626.36s - 1629.38s

So I think he's likely to be the guy that plays the most.

Speaker 31630.62s - 1631.36s

But I don't know.

Speaker 01631.36s - 1635.68s

Like I could easily flip Pete and Spanford PERSON simply because of the positions and the needs there.

Speaker 31635.88s - 1640.76s

But I would say that my guts goes with the order we have it here, Spanford, Pete, and then Johnson PERSON.

Speaker 21641.14s - 1644.04s

My gut says that Spanford is going to make the 53 man roster.

Speaker 31644.32s - 1661.28s

So therefore I think he's going to play the most snaps. I think this, to me, he's just the Sean McEwen PERSON upgrade, right? Like, I think the Cowboys like Sean McEwen PERSON, but it's time to move on to try to get somebody younger, maybe develop somebody else in that role. I think Span Ford PERSON, just surely because of size and body type, gives them something

Speaker 21661.28s - 1677.54s

a little different than what they have in the roster. And the other two guys, I think, are practice squad guys with Pete PERSON probably the most likely to eventually get a call-up under the roster. But I don't feel great about their chances either. Yeah.

Speaker 31677.64s - 1681.62s

I mean, I think these are all like, look, part of it is that the Cowboys ORG have a deep roster already.

Speaker 21681.74s - 1723.22s

They do have a deep roster. They have a lot of numbers at these positions. Despite, you know, what the need is for running back, they have a lot of people. Yeah, they've got bodies. Yes. Yeah.So it's, it's going to be an uphill climb for these guys to kind of, you know, try to snipe one of those bottom of the roster sort of spots and take it for themselves. All right.
