David, what do we got today? Welliel jim harbaugh said competitors are welcome and there's going to be a ton of competition and that chargers wide receiver room it is going to be a blazing battle in this training camp and that means they're interested in another wide receiver man there's a lot of bodies in there is there anybody from last year's wide receiver room that is going to be safe and could this be the season that tuli tuli

Speaker 291.2s - 148.26s

polo to breaks out yeah it's a great question because i think he will be much better in 2024 but today's episode is brought to you by fan duel make every moment more right now new customers get 150 dollars in bonus bets with any winning five dollar bet. That's $150 with any winning $5 bet. Visit fandul.com slash locked on to get started. David, I don't think anyone was surprised very much that the Chargers ORG were still interested in wide receiver after the draft. Even though when you do the numbers game, it's still like, okay, well, DJ Shark probably balances out one of those seventh round picks potentially, right?Either Cornelius Johnson or Brendan Rice PERSON. And then after it was reported that DJ Shark PERSON had a contract with the Chargers before it was officially announced, you see R.A. Merov from the 33rd team reporting that the Chargers had Marquez, Valde, Scantling, MVS, visiting with them on Monday. So at this point, we're recording this on Tuesday night. There is no deal done. But it was interesting, David PERSON, to see that nonetheless, because it's like it doesn't feel like that long ago when we were talking about this wide receiver room having like three dudes in it.

Speaker 4148.26s - 224.88s

And now it just seems like they just are going to add even more to it. Yeah, I was really, really surprised. Honestly, after the Chargers signed DJ Chark, I thought that was going to be it. I thought they were done at the wide receiver position because there's already a ton of bodies in that room. Like I said, the competition's going to be insane. Uh, but hey, they probably want another fast wide receiver, another guy to be able to stretch the field. MVS is definitely a guy that can do that. Last year, 21 receptions on 40 targets, 315 yards and only one touchdown. Uh, and had three drops last year as well. He didn't see a ton of action despite, you know, playing in 16 games. He didn't really have any games where he had more than five targets in any one game. The one thing we know about MVS is he's a guy that does one thing extremely well. He runs down the football field and he stretches the field. He is a big play machine in 2020 he averaged over 20 yards per reception which is ridiculous yeah like that's uh like massive massive numbers there is some drops in there for for mvs in his career for sure that is something that you have to uh account for for you're potentially looking at bringing him in yeah and i know some people have

Speaker 2224.88s - 264.58s

wondered you know why get mvs you know, why get MVS ORG? You got DJ Shark PERSON, ran a 4-3-9, right? Do you need another kind of four-three speed, deep, field stretcher type of player? I think they're different kind of players. I mean, to me, I think it would be like DJ Shark would play more in the Mike Williams role, whereas someone like MVS would probably play more on the Jalen Guyton PERSON role. That's kind of how I would see it if we were basing it off the last year, right? And then Lab McConkey is Keenan Allen PERSON and so on and so forth. If you're going through it like that. But I don't know, man, I think it is like you obviously trust the process and you, if the chargers want to add a ton of competition to that room, you understand it. Yeah. But I just haven't felt like he's a very good player, to be honest, right?

Speaker 0264.68s - 273.28s

Like, and maybe Justin Herbert could bring out something out of him that Aaron Rogers and Patrick Mahomes PERSON couldn't, but like, it's not like this dude's been lacking for talent at the quarterback position. Yeah.

Speaker 4273.58s - 278.24s

He just hasn't been able to make it translate into any really big season. You know, it's always

Speaker 2278.24s - 285.76s

one of those things, whether it drops, whatever it is, he's never had a super successful season. So I think we'll see if it even happens

Speaker 0285.76s - 289.02s

because that's an important part of it because no deal has happened yet. But I do think just the

Speaker 2289.02s - 312.72s

interest, I think in a way kind of fuels like an indictment of what they felt like they had in that wide receiver room already. Right. So today we are getting into our chargers by yourselves. I'm saying like Canadian chargers by yourselves today. And this is the first one I have here. Quentin Johnston, Joshua Palmer and Darius Davis are all locks to make the 2024 roster.

Speaker 4312.9s - 343.78s

Are you buying or selling that? Yeah. I mean, despite, you know, what the charges have done in that wide receiver room, I'm going to buy it. I do feel like they are all locks and, and all for very different reasons. So for Josh Palmer, I think he's been the most consistent wide receiver that the charges ORG currently have on their roster. Also has chemistry with Justin Herbert after, you know, that took a little bit of time to build. But I think it's pretty obvious that he's put to work in before practice, after practice, and in games to be able to make enough, enough plays to be able to get that.

Speaker 2344.06s - 351.06s

I mean, yeah. And I think that he's the best wide receiver on this team right now. Like I truly do. But at the same time,

Speaker 4351.72s - 355.58s

when you look at the other guys, it's a numbers game like we talked about. So I went back and

Speaker 2355.58s - 450.76s

looked at the Ravens ORG, right, just to see how many wide receivers they kept, especially during the Greg Roman times. There was one year that they kept seven wide receivers. Will they do with this? I don't know, because every other year was six or five. So like, you know,do they have Darius Davis PERSON in kind of a special category? But if you're talking about Josh Palmer, man, like I don't know how you, I guess you could, you know, say he's been banged up and he's never, you know, put together a really, really good season. But to me,he's the best wide receiver that they have right now. He has the best rapport with Justin Herbert, like you talked about. And I think that when he has had to be the guy in short spurts, he's kind of showed that. Yeah. I mean, five games over the last couple of seasons with at least 99 yards. We've seen them put up some hundred yard games over that span with Keenan Allen PERSON and MikeWilliams getting injured. But when those guys ran him being the third fiddle to them. Quentin Johnson PERSON is an interesting one because he had a very bad season, his rookie season. Same like we saw with Mike Williams once upon a time. But it still feels like it would be shocking to move on from a first round pick, David, after one down season. You said something funny to me the other day when we were talking about this. And I was like, it would feel totally crazy for Quentin Johnston to get cut or for something to happen to him, considering how he's the first guy they bring up in a post-Keehan world when they talk about their wide receivers. You know, Joe Hortiz PERSON, after the don't sleep on Clinton Johnson now, right? That's one of the things came out of his mouth. But as you said, he also talked about Keenan Allen PERSON pretty much every every time he got a chance to, too. But it still feels like it would be a shock if Quentin Johnson wasn't on this team in 2024.Yeah.

Speaker 4450.88s - 457.26s

Also, I think you have to consider the message that that would send to the first round picks that the charges would bring in. Right.

Speaker 0457.38s - 471.52s

I mean, I know it was not his pick from his, you know, his regime. But this is his second year. I mean, to be able to sit here and say that it's impossible that Quentin Johnston does not get better in his second year in the NFL ORG, I think

Speaker 2471.52s - 475.34s

would be a lot. I mean, this would be a cut too, right? Like nobody's thinking that he's going to get cut

Speaker 4475.34s - 495.8s

before the Chargers ORG going to training camp, right? Like, even if MVS comes in, you assume that all of these guys are going to have it, let it play out through the preseason, through training camp and all these things. It's not like, you know, they're going to bring an MVS and to make a roster spot for him, Quentin Johnston, the first round pick ends up on the street. And honestly, like, to the sentiment of like, what does that say to your first round picks?

Speaker 2496.64s - 508.88s

I know it's a different regime. If you're terrible, though, and it's your second season and you still don't look at their training game preseason, maybe you don't want to hang on to that guy. I mean, I don't know, you know what I mean i mean it's a little different but i think we would both be

Speaker 4508.88s - 515.76s

shocked right yeah there's no way at the same time dearius davis PERSON feels like it would also be pretty

Speaker 0515.76s - 523.36s

shocking too because like i'm going to sell it that they're all roster locks if they add mvs

Speaker 2523.36s - 526.9s

and i'm going to put that caveat in it because at a certain point, it's a numbers game.

Speaker 0527.2s - 539.06s

Sure. They went out and handpicked three receivers. Two of them are seven three on picks could they try to stash both of them in the practice squad short. They went and handpicked those guys. Yeah. They went in handpicked DJ Chark PERSON. They went and handpicked if it happens MVS.

Speaker 2539.86s - 543.24s

So that means the three guys that were already coming into it when you're talking about

Speaker 4543.24s - 585.5s

five other guys and we know they're not keeping eight wide receivers. You would think be the guys that they liked right why bring those guys in why draft them if you don't think they're going to make the team but dari davis i know matt money smith is hinted at you know hey maybe he's on the bubble are you gonna get is ryan ficking going to let you let go of an all pro punt returner especially with the changes in the the kickoff rules i think that the kickoffs are going to be much more part of the game. And with Dary Zavis already showing you, and I know he didn't really excel as a kick returner, but no new rules. And his quickness and his speed, I think we'll excel with those new rules in place this year. I think it would be an absolutely horrible decision to get rid of an all pro returner. I don't care what you say.

Speaker 0589.9s - 594.14s

Yeah, I think the thing is, is just like he doesn't bring potentially anything to this new offense. We don't, we don't know if they're going to use them. They have so many wide receivers now.

Speaker 2594.2s - 598.82s

It'd be hard to imagine. They imagine a big role for Darius Davis PERSON. If you're trying to get

Speaker 4598.82s - 604s

Josh Palmer and Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey PERSON and all of these guys on the field, right?

Speaker 2604.06s - 745.22s

Like in a run heavy offense potentially, right? Also, they brought in some guys that have punt returner experience in college, Lab McConkey, Brennan Rice PERSON, both of those guys, good punt returners in college, not all pros at the NFL ORG level. But he's not going to be out there blocking. I mean, Darius Davis PERSON at his size, right?Like, I just don't see him being a part of the offense. Do they keep an extra guy because he's such a special team's phenom? I'd say you find a way to do it. But just their actions are saying there's probably someone they don't like nearly as much as the perceived notion outside of that building. And that's just what it feels like when you see the MVS ORG news come out like that. But we still have some more by yourselves to get into, including a tier making a wild claim that the charges could have the best offensive line and running game in the first eight weeks of this season. So we're going to talk about that and much more about this wide receiver room and more in today's locked on Chargers podcast. First, so I need to tell you guys about FanDuel because it's winner take all time in the NBA and NHL ORG. And FanDuel ORG is giving you a shot to bring home a big win of your own. Right now, new customers get $150 in bonus bets with any winning $5 bet. That's $150 to bet on spreads, money lines, player props, and more. But that means, David, you could literally find the biggest favorite when you go on Fanduel. For example,Thursday night's game, you could go with the Celtics ORG just to win the game. They don't have to win by the spread, right? There are 13 and a half point favorites. If you put $5 on the Celtics and they win the game they don't have to win by the spread right there are 13 and a half point favorites if you put $5 on the Celtics and they win that game you get 150 bucks in bonus bets but that is for me especially non football season the way that i make my sports more interesting is definitely with fando ORG and i think another great thing is the live in game betting because i think as chargers fans you always know like i know the ending of this game and this isn't going to be the final score so i can actually put my money on what I know is about to unfold in front of me.But if you guys want to get on the action in this playoff season, visit fandwell.com slash locked on and make every playoff shot count. Fan duel, America's number one sportsbook. All right, David PERSON, we have some more by yourselves and we're going to get more into this wide receiver room, including if the Chargers have a thousand yard wide receiver on this roster. Or also just, you know,if they really have put so much emphasis into everything around Justin Herber outside of wide receiver, that maybe that won't happen. But A Tier thinks Justin Herber PERSON is going to have one of the best supporting guests in the NFL and his buyer sell the day is definitely a bold take for sure.

Speaker 3745.34s - 776.9s

Hi Dan. Hi, David. This is a tier. Okay, I'm going to have two voicemail this week. Be prepared. I'm not playing. Now to my buy or sell Tuesday, the charges will have the number one rushing attack and the best offensive line and the NFL by week eight. How about style? I am buying it what says you. Let me hear you.Thank you. Love you. I love you, it here.

Speaker 2777.02s - 796.82s

And to anyone who wants to get in on with their voicemail on a fan mail show or a buy or sell day, 323, 524, 794, leave us a 30 second question or buy or sell. It's likely to get on the show. David PERSON, I'm interested to hearing your take on this. I know we are kind of hoping for improvements in both of those areas, dramatically even. Number one is tough, though.

Speaker 4797.6s - 830.5s

It's too tough, and that's why I'm going to sell it. I think they'll both be much improved in both areas, but I can't sit here and commit to number one units. The interior of the offensive line has to dramatically improve. Like, it's got to get a ton better. Greg Roman PERSON will have this running game humming. That's what he does. His track record is there from pretty much every single stop. I will say this. I will say that both will be top 10 units in the league.

Speaker 2830.5s - 846.16s

You'd buy that. I think that I will buy. And I think that is still a dramatic improvement in within itself. Yeah. I think it's just the amount of middle ground that would cause me pause here. Right?Because I think that with where you're coming from

Speaker 0846.16s - 865.24s

that's really tough because i don't think anyone would put the chargers in the top 25 offensive lines last year pretty much the only player that exceeded his expectations or even lived up to his expectations was risholns later and that was it right in the running game they're 27th in the nfl in yards per carry at 3.8 25th in the NFL ORG and rushing yards per game.

Speaker 2865.24s - 870.2s

So, like, that's jumping up 24 and 26 spots, right?

Speaker 0870.26s - 871.74s

In both of those. That's a lot.

Speaker 4871.74s - 872.82s

I could buy top 10.

Speaker 0873.04s - 877.16s

And that would be still an insane, insane improvement.

Speaker 4877.36s - 881s

But I think that, like, I've seen this a lot, like the Chargers ORG having the best

Speaker 2881s - 946.84s

offensive on in the NFL ORG. And it drives me crazy, man, just because it's like you added one piece who's a huge unknown in Joe All PERSON, who I think could be really, really good. Yeah. And I would expect him to be. You know where Sean Slater PERSON's good.Yeah. What else do you know? What else do you know in that group? I'm expecting Greg Roman PERSON to improve this group. But to think that, you know, Bradley Bozeman, who I think is a great fit for Greg Roman PERSON, I have less questions about Bradley Bowman after giving up, up you know a ton of sacks last year than Ihave about Zion Johnson or Jamali Samari Sawyer PERSON if he is ends up being the starter at right guard the hard thing is there's no competition for those dudes unless they get pushed by an undrafted free agent unless they try to move Tray Pipkins PERSON inside to right guard who is the competition so yeah if you don't have that competition if you don't have somebody pushing those guys for their starting job how how can I fully buy in on it improving I think as a unit it's gonna be somuch better I just to say best in the in the league best in the NFL ORG that's so much harder for me to buy I think we're assuming a lot of things and putting a ton of faith in this coaching staff which I have maybe not number one in the NFL ORG faith, right?

Speaker 0946.9s - 963.5s

But if there was anyone who could do it, I think it would probably be the guys they have doing it right now. So let's get to this next buy yourself from Big Daddy E, who says, by yourself, Justin Herbert will have at least one thousand yard wide receiver this season. As always, great show fellas. David PERSON, do they have a thousand yard receiver on this team right now?

Speaker 4964.18s - 968.1s

I got a hot take for you on this one. And I think, I think people are going to,

Speaker 2968.1s - 983.5s

gonna like this one here. Let's see. I'm gonna buy it. And, and the, and it's actually gonna be a rookie. Keenan Allen and John Jefferson PERSON are the only rookie wide receivers in Chargers history to eclipse a thousand yards receiving. And Brendan Rice is gonna do it this year.

Speaker 4983.5s - 985.72s

Mad McConkey is going to be the next Chargersaned rice is going to do it this year mad macaunkey PERSON is going to be

Speaker 2985.72s - 1000.68s

the next chargers wide receiver that is going to join that list i love it yeah i hey i love it i love the the hot take it's either him or josh palmer to me those are two most likely people and

Speaker 01000.68s - 1020.76s

i think the hard thing about that is both of them have injury histories that would concern you the reason that georgia at georgia ladock PERSON, he never put up bananas numbers was not just because he was behind Brock Bowers PERSON, because he had a list of injuries that he went there. Joshua Palmer, when the Chargers kind of needed him to step up and be wide receiver one without Keenan and Howe and Mike Williams for parts of last year, he was also banged up and it has been

Speaker 21020.76s - 1043.5s

banged up the last couple of years, even though he's played through a lot of it. I'm going to sell it. But it's not as if it can't happen. I mean, I think when you look at, you know, I went back and looked in Baltimore, there was only one year in the four years that Greg Roman was the offensive coordinator that they had a thousand wide, thousand yard wide receiver or tight end. But just that wide receiver, DeMarcus Robinson led that team in 2022 with 450

Speaker 41043.5s - 1046.72s

at receiving yards. That was the top receiver that year.

Speaker 21047.68s - 1076.08s

Hollywood Brown, a thousand and eight just got there in 2021. He did not get there in 2020 or 2019. He led the team with 769 in 2020 and 584 in 2019. So pretty hard to be a thousand yard receiver, but that's also Omar Jackson PERSON. That's also a much more run heavy offense when you have a quarterback who's running it a couple hundred times a season. Then in San Francisco, Michael Crabtree did it once in the four years. And then

Speaker 31076.08s - 1081.26s

Anquam Bolden did it twice. Talk about Michael Crabtree PERSON? Michael Crabtree, put some respect on his name.

Speaker 21081.66s - 1140.8s

Anquan Bolden did it twice. So three out of the four years with Greg Roman roman in san francisco they had a thousand yard receiver so i think it can happen in this offense but it was only ever one guy and it only happened you know four out of the eight seasons between san francisco and baltimore GPE so hard to do it hard to have multiple guys do it like the charges had in 2021 with mike williams and keen PERSON and i just don't see the guy on this roster with the health concerns that could do it i'm not going to buy in on, you know, Quentin Johnson doing that in year or two. And just not there. Let's get to this next one here from Nick Skipper PERSON, who says, buy or so the team will look to trade some of their wide receivers. So I would buy the fact that they would listen. I just don't think that they would get anything back for them. Like, I don't think they have anyone on this roster right now that would fetch them very much, you know, maybe Ladd McConkey PERSON could land you a, you know, a future second round bake or something like that. But like, I don't see where, I mean, King PERSON now went for a fourth round pick, David. So that, that's the hard thing. Like, are you going to trade Josh Palmer for a late seventh round pick or a pick swap? Like, I wouldn't do that. That's what I was going to say.

Speaker 41140.9s - 1153.72s

I mean, first of all, it takes two to tango, right? I mean, you got to have somebody that's going to be interested in one of the guys that you have. And I think you might be able to get something for Josh Palmer, but honestly, I think he's more valuable with the chargers, with the chemistry that he has with Justin Herbert.

Speaker 21154.48s - 1170.26s

Yeah, I mean, I think if you look at the guys who have seasons similar to that, like to Josh Palmer's PERSON best season, which is, you know, over 700 yards, never over 800 in any of his three years. Like, I mean, Jerry Judy went for a fifth and a six, and he's had three seasons that are better than Josh Palmer's PERSON best season. Right.

Speaker 01170.26s - 1182.7s

You know, you look at other guys, Michael Hardman, Van Jefferson, Chase Claypool PERSON, all kind of project guys that, you know, never really lived up to the hype. All those guys were traded for, like, them in a seventh round pick for a sixth round pick.

Speaker 21182.8s - 1196.3s

Like, the wide receiver market's not there. I know we all like Joshua Palmer to think that with Keenan Allen getting a seventh round pick for a sixth round pick. Like the wide receiver market's not there. I know we all like Joshua Palmer to think that with Keenan Allen getting a fourth round pick and what some of these other guys are getting moved for, that you could get anything outside of this sixth or seventh round, I think, is you're just not going to get it.

Speaker 01196.32s - 1196.52s

Yeah.

Speaker 21197.02s - 1342.96s

I would rather keep him than get a sixth or seventh round pick in 2025. That's just, like I said, I think he's right now the Chargers ORG best receiver. And David PERSON has him, you know, in the same regard, right? Except where I mean, I guess maybe he has Ladd-McConkie is the best receiver now if he has him going for a thousand-yard season. But we do have more by yourselves to get into because we have to get into if this could beTully PERSON's breakout season. I know I would love to see it, but can he do it behind guys like Joey Bosa and Kalee-O-Mack PERSON in front of him? So we're going to get into that potential needs still for the Chargers. Will Justin Herbert hit 4,000 passing yards this year and more on today's locked-on charges podcast? First though, I do need to tell you guys, the game is off right now. We've got to pause here to talk more about Monopoly Go PRODUCT, and I know what you're saying.Flag on the play, you're always talking about that, but there's just so much good stuff to get to in this game. But David PERSON, let's continue these buy or sell years with a big one that we got from boomer who's saying buy or sell, Tully breakout season. This one's tough, David PERSON, because I think a lot of it has to do with opportunity. And he has two really good rushers in front of him. Yeah. I mean, first I would pose the question,

Speaker 41342.96s - 1348.68s

what would what would constitute as a breakout season? I mean, I think last year, I mean, I think you're talking

Speaker 21348.68s - 1352.88s

edge rushers. You're probably talking double digit sacks, right? Like to me, that that's

Speaker 41352.88s - 1406.34s

probably the standard of what a breakout season looks like for an edge rusher, even though it's, you know, a flawed metric. Right. So we're talking about about Tully who had this season last year, 53 tackles, four and a half sacks, two force fumbles, and seven run stuffs. I think he's in for a very good year. I can easily see him double that sack total from last year, but I think his true breakout isgoing to be in 2025 because of what you just said of who's in front of him, Callio Mack and Joey Bosa PERSON. I just think that he needs to wait for him to be one of the guys, one of the premier edge rushers, one of the top guys on the team. And right now he's just not that, you know. And I think you want to hope that you can get, you know, a full season out of Joey and Kaleal PERSON probably not going to happen.Just what history has told us. But I think his true breakout year will be

Speaker 21406.34s - 1433.56s

2025. Yeah, I'll sell a full breakout season just because I'd hate to project an injury, even with Joey Bose's PERSON injury history. Obviously, if you were to get hurt early in the season, Tully PERSON would have a great chance to break out. And I think that he could definitely do it under Jesse Minter as one of the top two edge rushers on this team. And I also think with someone like Jesse mentor, he's going to be doing whatever we can to get all three of these guys on the field at the same time, which was an unstoppable trio when the Chargers had them all together in 2020.

Speaker 01433.56s - 1435.4s

Even with Brandon Staley PERSON coaching this team.

Speaker 21435.52s - 1448.62s

I do think that if he can make the leap he had from his last year in college to his first year in the NFL, like that'll be as close to a breakout you're going to see with as many snaps as he's going to get on this team. I mean, where he was last year compared to his final year

Speaker 01448.62s - 1493.24s

at USC ORG, insane. I mean, the body type was totally different, kind of committed fully to just being an edge rusher, wasn't rushing as much on the inside anymore. And I think the other thing here, too, is just like his game hit a rookie ball last year. Playing more games than he'd ever played in any kind of college season was, I think, something that definitely affected him later on in the year. And I think that his past rush arsenal is only going to develop over the off season because if he works in the off season, anywhere near how he plays when he's on the field, you know that dude has a crazywork ethic and is putting everything he possibly can into improving his game every off season. So let's get to this next buyer cell here from Mark Catlin PERSON, who, by herself, the chargers still need to address cornerback, safety, and defensive tackle. David E. Byron PERSON or selling that. Yeah, I'm going to buy it. I definitely feel

Speaker 41493.24s - 1522.56s

like there's still work to be done. I think, you know, personally, the chargers might feel like they're done at the cornerback position, but I wouldn't, would not hate them grabbing another veteran to add to that room. I think it is still pretty young, pretty inexperienced there. They definitely need a free safety. I've been saying that for a long, long time. They just don't have anybody that's proven at that specific type of position.Alohe Gilman and Derwin James PERSON are mostly, both the strong safety. So and then defense.

Speaker 21522.56s - 1524.3s

There's just only two guys you feel good about, right?

Speaker 41524.38s - 1547.98s

Right. And that's pretty much it. Yeah. And then defensive tackle. Yeah. They, they could add another body there. I mean, I think somebody brought up a Clayas Campbell. That might, you know, make a ton of sense there as a former Ravens guy there and a veteran to add to that defensive line rotation. Yeah. And I mean, not an obvious short term stop gap until you can kind of get more players in there that resemble what Jesse Binter PERSON wants the interior of that line to look like. You only drafted Justin Boyd being the four. And I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, an obvious short-term stopgap until you can kind of get more players in there that resemble what Jesse Binter wants the interior of that line to look like.

Speaker 21548.1s - 1617.82s

You only drafted Justin Boyd being the fourth round who were bullish on. Besides that, it's Puna Ford Morgan Fox, Tito Abonia and Scott Matlock PERSON, a lot of unprovens, a lot of, you know, kind of balance back candidates potentially, but you're going to need a lot of those guys to bounce back if that's going to be a formidable interior. I mean, I don't think there's one single guy in that room right there that blows you away by any means or that you feel like you could totally trust 100% being on the field for all three downs. I think it's going to be a committee. But yeah, I think you'd feel comfortable, more comfortable at every single one of those spots. If you had veterans there pushing the backups at the very least and getting better depth at those spots because safety, your depth is, you know, emergency lights flashing everywhere. Defensive tackle. You feel maybe you have some depth, the top end talent you're not really sure about. And cornerback, you know, Christian Fulton, you're hoping for a bounce back. Asande Samuel Jr. PERSON hoping fits. You don't have a potential starting slot right now outside of Jaseer Taylor PERSON who got benched to that position last year outside of rookies and guys that are going to be trying out forthat spot. So I think all of those you'd feel better if you had a veteran. So we do have a voicemail here from Griffin who's calling into the show today. Let's hear what Griffin PERSON has for us.

Speaker 01617.82s - 1627.12s

Hey guys, Griffin PERSON here. I was wondering if you were buying or selling Justin Herbick getting 4,000 yards this season. Thanks. Bolt up.

Speaker 21627.98s - 1635.5s

Bolt up to you, brother. David, this is kind of like the 1,000 yard receiver thing to me a little bit because I think the offense has a lot to do with it. Are you buying or selling it?

Speaker 41636.18s - 1650.8s

Yeah, I'm going to buy it. I mean, the lions, I think, would be a good example here. They ran the ball 92 more times than they threw the ball last year. And Jared Goff still went over 4,500 passing yards and there are going to be games where

Speaker 01650.8s - 1661.2s

Justin Herbert is going to cut it loose and you know we we know that he has the capability to take over a game when he's hot he can make any throw on the football field he has that type of ability

Speaker 21661.2s - 1672.76s

so I am buying it for sure unfortunately Unfortunately, Greg Roman is not Ben Johnson PERSON. There's a reason we wanted Ben Johnson PERSON. And I think that, you know, if that's kind of what you're hoping that the chartered offense.

Speaker 41672.76s - 1678.48s

Yeah, that would be the ideal. A team that runs the ball a ton, but still throws the ball a lot. Then again,

Speaker 21678.54s - 1756.62s

if you're on to look for, you know, direct comparisons, you can look at all the teams that Greg Roman PERSON has had without quarterbacksthat are like Justin Herbert in his specific way. But none of them ever sniffed 4,000 yards, right? Lamar Jackson only hit 3,000 yards once in the four seasons that Greg Roman PERSON was there. Colin Kaepernick, Alex Smith, never sniffed 4,000 yards in their time with Greg Roman PERSON. That being said, I'm buying it. I think Justin Herbert is different than those guys. I think, you know, even Lamar Jackson PERSON has an MVP season in there where he didn't sniff it.But Justin Herbert is just a different kind of quarterback. And like I think that with a more well-balanced offense, with the chains getting moved more, with a team that should be better put together for him. I don't know. You know, will he do it this year? I think so.But like, it's hard for me to imagine that like he's going to go his entire tenure with Greg Ran without hitting 4,000 yards. I mean, he did it with fractured rib cartilage in 2022. He would have done it with a broken finger last year had he not broken his other finger, right? And missed most of five games. So I think he'll do it, but I think it's going to be a lot tougher. And I think just because, you know, even if he doesn't do it, doesn't mean the Chargers ORG offense will be worse for it either. So yeah, let's get this last one here by yourself. The reason that Joe Hortez is signing so many one year contracts is though so that players can shine under Harbaugh scheme, then sign somewhere else next year for the beloved compensatory picks. David PERSON, buy yourself.

Speaker 41757.16s - 1772.06s

I'm buying it for sure. According to over the cap, they're already going to have three six round comp picks from the you know the the the people who left in free agency. Gerald Everett. Uh, uh, uh, obviously Austin Neckler PERSON. Yeah.

Speaker 21772.18s - 1777.62s

Yeah. So they're going to have a bunch. I mean, they, they signed seven or eight one year

Speaker 01777.62s - 1791.74s

contracts with guys this, uh, off season here. Um, I'm sure some of them they might resign, but several of them are them are not going to resign and inevitably they will turn into more compics. So absolutely yes. I sell that that's the

Speaker 21791.74s - 1828.88s

reason he's doing it, but I think that that's a very obvious upside to doing it this way. I think the reason he's doing it is because he doesn't want to see the charters put in a sap calorie, salary cap situation that they were this year. He's keeping flexibility for future seasons. I think when you have a quarterback like Justin Herbert, who's going to have the cap hits that he's going to have in 2025 and beyond, you don't want to do the JC Jackson PERSON type of contracts and really jeopardize how much space you have in the future. So I think all of these one year deals, yes, it's nice because you're kind of getting balanced back candidates and guys, you need a ton of guys. It was a depleted roster that they took over. They had to give out one year deals. Yes, it's nice because you're kind of getting balanced back candidates and guys, you need a ton of guys. It was a depleted roster that they took over. They had to give

Speaker 01828.88s - 1858.34s

out one year deals. They had to find guys that were willing to bet on themselves in Jim Harbaugh's system to go and be much better. But you're talking about who is going to be most likely. I'd say Christian Fulton has a great chance of having a good year, you know, much better year than he had last year and going and getting paid next year. I think JK Dobbins PERSON has a good chance of going out there and getting paid much more in 2025 than he did in 2024. Hayden Hurst. Bradley Bozeman, two other guys that are still at the age where they could get a couple of your contract next year. So I like it and I think that will be

Speaker 21858.34s - 1948.88s

a benefit of it. But I think it's mostly just about financial flexibility, keeping the big picture, the big picture and keeping that in mind instead of being being frivolous and doing things that are going to hurt you in the future which is what the last regime did and it kind of all in your last year and put joe hortiz in the spot where he had to try keen PERSON and allen basically so you hope to never have to do that again i think it's smart the way that they have done it and i think it's impressive the amount of guys they've been able to sell on that vision that hey come here We'll be able to recoup that value.Something we wanted Brandon State would do, right? Something we thought Brandt State ORG would do for a long time. But you come to Jim Harbaugh's team. You're going to be better. You're going to be tougher. You're going to be healthier. And you're going to get paid afterwards. And I think that's the message they're sending. I think it's worked pretty well so far with the guys they've gotten to buy in on it. But that's going to wrap things up for today. Show.
