All right, transfer quarterback, Brendan Sullivan PERSON, now a Hawkeye. What does it mean? Plus, we have other portal news at Indiana ORG and some interesting basketball stories for you as well. Plus our Big Ten classics and live action going into the weekend. But let's start off with the Hawkeyes ORG and their football team. I love talking about Iowa GPE football on this podcast, as you can probably tell. I just think they're one of the more intriguing teams in the Big Ten.I know a lot of people complain about their style and you go, what do you mean? They're interesting and intriguing, but they are. They really, really are. Add this week's announcement that Northwestern Transfer quarterback Brendan Sullivan announced that he's coming to Iowa GPE. And they once again become one of the more interesting stories of the Big Ten this year. I'll explain this and connect the dots in just a moment. But if you follow the Hawkeyes ORG, you know the drill, you know the storyline. You know what's been going on there the past couple years. No offense. Zero offense. And yet they find a way to win. It's incredible. You can't take your eyes off. You don't know what they're going to do next. You don't expect much. And then a lot of stuff happens. Last year to say that they had no offense was an understatement of the year. Remember old coach Herm Edwards PERSON. He used to say, you play to win the game. Doesn't matter what the stats are. It doesn't matter if it's ugly or pretty or style points. None of that matters. You just need to win an Iowa won 10 football games last year and found itself in the Big 10 championship that was pretty good at the drama that the head coach had to fire his son theoffensive coordinator and the Hawkeyes ORG were a team that nobody could take their eyes off of certainly not me certainly not us here at lockdown big 10 now they may have a good old-fashioned quarterback battle on their hands all of a sudden. I don't know that they expected to have one not too long ago. But Kate McNamara, you know, he's yet to actually live up to the fanfare since transferring. He transferred in after leading Michigan to a Big Ten ORG title and a college football playoff in the pre-J.McCarthy era. However, he arrived coming off an injury there. He was limited during his first spring camp a year ago. He suffered a new injury in summer camp that slowed his development and his chemistry with the football team. And it went into the season, not quite right. Then in week five, he suffered a season ending knee injury, another injury altogether against Michigan State ORG.He still has not fully recovered from that injury, although he should be good to go for summer count. That's what they're saying anyway. However, for the second straight year, he was very limited during spring football. He threw a couple of weeks ago, but still can't drop back and plant and throw. So that's where he's at right now. This upcoming season is it for McNamara. He has one last year of eligibility left. He's running out of time. And it's been presumed that he would be the starter all along because frankly, last year's backup quarterback, Deacon Hill PERSON really wasn't good enough at the time to replace him. But he had to come in when the injury took place. And he'll just left, by the way, hitting the transfer portal. So there really wasn't anybody who's ready to step up and either push McNamara or step in and play for him if McNamara isn't quite right to start the season this year. But that's down the road. So what we're going to do in the meantime? Well, Sullivan's coming in from Northwestern and his arrival, I think, brings two different storylines. Now, perhaps Sullivan came in with an eye on being part of the team this year, backing up a McNamara learning the system, and maybe having his eye on the 2025 season for being the starting quarterback. Maybe because after all, he has two years of eligibility left. Or he may see McNamara's vulnerability here and his lack of ability to remain healthy. And maybe he's coming to Iowa and he's gunning for that starting job right now in 2024. That is a strong possibility.Strong possibility. Now, let's not forget, we talked about this a little earlier in a previous podcast that Iowa's new offensive coordinator, Tim Lester PERSON. You know, he has, he tried to recruit Sullivan PERSON. He's got a relationship with him back when Lester was the head coach at Western Michigan ORG. He tried to recruit Sullivan PERSON. He was a three-star player out of high school in the state of Michigan ORG.So there's a relationship there. There's a comfortable relationship between the two. Now, let's put yourself in Tim Lester's shoes, all right. There's been all this outcry about offense at Iowa GPE. I mean, Kirk Ferrence had to fire his son, Brian Farrant's the offensive corner. So Lester comes in four or five months ago and he's planning for the season. All eyes are on him and make sure the offense is better. And here's McNamara. No fault of his own, but McNamara is still healing. Can't do much. All right, now we're going through springfootball, getting rid for the season. I'm the new offensive coordinator, Tim Lester PERSON, still don't have my quarterback. Deacon Hill PERSON, leaves. Got a couple young guys, not ready to go. What are we going to do?We got to get somebody. We got to get somebody. Oh, you know, Sullivan just entered the portal. He entered the portal late this spring out of Northwestern. But Lester's like, let's go. And maybe who knows, behind the scenes, maybe Lester was calling him. Say, hey, I got a panic situation here at Iowa GPE. I got a quarterback. I haven't even even seen play a single play yet here in practice. He may or may not be ready to go. I think he is, but I don't know. I got questionmarks. I got to hit the ground running. I know what you can do. You have a little bit of experience of Northwestern. Once you come over here to Iowa GPE. All right? I think that's what happened behind the scenes. I really do. I think I think Lester was starting to get a little uncomfortable with what was coming down the pike here to start the season. He wanted to shore up that quarterback room. So that's exactly what he has done. And so Lester then goes to Kirk Farrant PERSON says, look, let's give this kid a look. Let's bringhim in. I know what he could do. They must have liked it. Everybody must have liked each other because Sullivan announced now that he is coming to Iowa GPE. So look, it's not like Sullivan is the second coming of Tom Brady PERSON. It's not like all of a sudden that Iowa GPE's going to start airing it out. Well, let's talk about it. We mentioned he was a three-star recruit out of Davidson High School in Michigan ORG.He was at Northwestern for three years. He redshirted the first year. It's got a good size. It's good size. Six, three, two hundred and twenty-five pounds. During the past two seasons, he appeared in 13 games. He was not the regular starter there. He mostly backed up Ben Bryant PERSON. But he's an accurate thrower. Completed 134 out of 195 passes for 1,300 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions when he was on the field. Also ran for three touchdowns. So there's something there. Best case scenario for the Hawkeyes ORG. Cade McNamara PERSON returns at full strength. It comes a solid, steady influence on the offense like he did at Michigan ORG, and maybe they win some games. And Sullivan can be a backup, and maybe Iowa will have a nice succession plan going into 2025. All right, that's in a perfect world.Or maybe Sullivan finds its comfort zone actually beats out McNamara for the job. That'd be a nice problem for Kirk Ferrence and Tim Lester PERSON to have. Also possibility. But regardless, who takes the snaps there at quarterback, there are still a ton of question marks, offensive line, a wide receiver, all that that Iowa GPE needs to overcome. But if there's a team that can overcome it, it's Iowa because they do it year after year after year. Nevertheless, I think it's going to be one of the most interesting stories to keep an eye on here this summer, the quarterback battle between those two at Iowa. What do you think? especially you every dayers out there. Meanwhile, be sure to subscribe on YouTube, share, and follow and like Lockdown Big Ten ORG, your team every day. And don't forget our website as well. You can check that out at TalkBig10.com ORG. All right.Let's get back to Iowa GPE. Let's talk about Iowa GPE. And I want to finish up some other stories about Iowa because former Iowa football player Cooper DeGine PERSON. Now Philadelphia Eagle wants a pretty good high school basketball player back in the day. And he was having some fun, taking some shots in fun.He said that he could beat former Iowa women's basketball player Caitlin Caitlin Clark PERSON, one-on-one in hoops. Now, Dijin recently said in an interview that Clark PERSON texted him about that matter and said that he's wrong and that she would beat him. So Dijin did say that he's the utmost respect for Clark, and perhaps the two will be able to play some one-on-one hoops in the future. All right, more good news for brand new Indiana football coach Kurt Signati PERSON. Former Ken State defensive lineman C.J. West says he's coming to Bloomington to play for the Hoosiers NORP. So another transfer. That's a plus for the Hoosiers NORP. He's 6-2. He's 305. He was also considering a lot of other good schools, Wisconsin, LSU, Michigan, Ruckers ORG. He's getting interested from all over the country, as a matter of fact. He's a grad transfer. He's already got four years of experience. He's got one more year of eligibility. Got 110 career tackles, 19 and a half for loss, seven sacks and 36 games. So a very experienced player coming to Bloomington GPE. That's great. And the announcement by Westcomes on the heels of former James Madison ORG defensive back and transfer DeAngelo Ponds committing this past weekend to the Hoosiers. Remember, Signetti's from James Madison ORG. So that was one of his players. So a couple of nice defensive pieces coming in. Both guys should start two of your 11 guys announcing this week. That's a good week for the Indiana Hoosiers ORG, don't you think?Absolutely. Also, while we are talking about the Hoosiers NORP, we got some people with some Indiana ORG basketball background in the news here. First of all, you may have to go back in time for this one. Former player Steve Downing, remember the name? Some of you might not. It was a while ago. He was one of the earliestBob Knight recruits in the early days at Indiana in the early 70s. And now he's the athletic director at Marion University. He just hired former Hoosier player Pat Knight, who is the son of Bob Knight PERSON, and he's going to be Marion ORG's new head basketball coach. So congratulations there. A couple of fun notes about both of them. Downing, by the way, he led Bob Knight's 1973 team to the final four.He was named a Big Ten MVP. This is Lockdown Big Ten ORG, right? A little history lesson for you. He was a Big Ten MVP back in the day, averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in the early 70s. Now, back to Pat Knight. It's 53 years old. You haven't probably seen him in a while. Remember, he was an assistant with Bob Knight when Bob Knight left Indiana and went to Texas Tech, was an assistant there. And then Knight decided to retire, Pat and I took over that program for a couple of years. And then he went to Lamar, a much smaller school, but I believe he got him into the NCAA tournament one year. There he's been out of coaching for a while and he's been a scout with the Indiana Pacers ORG ever since. Now he's going to be the head coach of Marion ORG. So it's good to see Pat Knight back into coaching, I think, and I'll be interested to see how he does. Indiana ORG Hoosier fans. Let me know what you think about that move. In the meantime, if your person's got TV on in a daytime at work or at home, maybe you've just kind of got it on his background noise, Fox Sports FS1, ESPN, and all the talking heads going back and forth with all those daytime talk sports shows. So always check the old grid for the weekend and point out a few highlights of things you need to know, like Big Ten classics, classic games from the past, or some live action, which is going on this weekend. And by the way, to round off our features on Fridays, we always have picks, picks, pigs, skin picks, basketball picks, odds for certain things coming up in the future, all that. So we always have a big feature that we like, bookmark it each and every week. We've got it right here.So it's Thursday. We're going to do a look at the Big Ten ORG classics on the Big Ten Network and live action coming up this weekend. It's all right here on Locked on Big 10. Let me tell you about FanDuel ORG. Again, I'd like to tell you about it all the time. It's winner, take all time now in the NBA ORG playoffs. It's getting serious. Stanley Cup EVENT playoff as well. Fan dual America's number one sportsbook. Couple things I like here on Thursday night.A couple NBA ORG games are going to focus on. Cavs and Celtics ORG. Celtics had their way with the calves in game one. Really clapped down the defense on them. And Vegas has even got a bigger point spread for this one in game two. It's 13 and a half.I still like it. I still like it. I don't know that the calves can score against the Celtics ORG. Over under at 2.11 and a half. Take the over on that one, just on the strength of the Celtics ORG alone, although the calves may struggle again to get to 100.So be wary of that. Meanwhile, the Mavs and the Thunder ORG. Thunder have a 1-0 series lead there. Thunder of 5.5 point favorites at home there and the over under 2.18.5. I like the over in that one. I think I like the thunder at minus five and a half. You decide for yourself. Anyway, visit fanduel.com slash locked on. That'sfandual.com slash locked on. And Fanduel is America's number one sportsbook.
