issues with the derby and uh bob bafford you name it but it's quite a tradition 150 years of anything in a row it's pretty amazing and as 150 years of anything in a row. It's pretty amazing. And as far as sports go in this country, there's not much that's been going on longer than the Kentucky Derby, which I think does say something and speak to the, I think the, I don't know, the power of the horse and the relationship between humans and horses, which is pretty profound. So there's that, and I'm going to choose to try to look at the Derby EVENT and the Oaks DerbyWeek that way and try to take a positive spin on it, get excited. The Oaks, obviously, on Friday, the Derby on Saturday will, of course, be with you a week from today, Derby Morning. A lot of things have happened, Derby Morning. Hopefully of course be with you a week from today derby morning a lot of things have happened derby morning hopefully it'll be a quiet one um a reminder that churchill downs opens their meet today uh at three o'clock california time six o'clock eastern time and um they have a pretty nice card and uh steve is going to talk about one of those races from a thoroughgraph ORG perspective.I think thoroughgraph is a little disappointed to see the Keenland meet-end after yesterday when they took almost all the money out of the pools. So I'll talk about that a little bit later, but wow, what a final five races from the thoroughgraph handicappers. Anyway, Churchill Downs opens today, but in addition to their first race card of Derby week, they are going to draw the Oaks and the Derby EVENT, I believe the whole cards, but certainly the Oaks and the Derby today this afternoon. So for the first time, we're going to have a full week where we know the post positions.Everything is pretty much set. The final workouts will be today. So I think that's great. It's a long overdue for them to have finally figured out that that's going to be beneficial to everybody, but they did. So there you have it. We'll know later this afternoon. Who got screwed down in the one or two hole and where everybody is and what that might mean and everybody can have their opinion on that and that will certainly affect the early odds and then we'll go from there so that's that's some good exciting stuffand a lot of tracks have figured that out now and I'm glad that the derby is on board with really really early post positions and past performances. So we can get after it. I'll be doing my work. Steve and Jay will be doing theirs, Thoreograph, of course, all over it, doing their thing. And there we go.So Derby Week, a couple quick Derby notes. Obviously, we'll find this out later today where they're going to be in the starting gate, but endlessly the California-based horse trained by Michael McCarthy, owned by the Amhermans PERSON. We've been in the game for a long, long time. He's a turf horse, and McCarthy PERSON said he prefers to run him on the turf, but the owners ended up winning that battle. If you want to call it winning, we'll find out a week from today. Endlessly will run in the Kentucky Derby EVENT.Owner, Mr. Hammerman is, I believe, 92 years old. And I think that I think that carried the day here. He may even understand that it's probably not the best thing for his horse, but he wants to be at the Derby EVENT. He wants to have a Derby runner. He ran great last time, and he's in. So endlessly will be running on the dirt in the derby next Saturday, and the Hammermans PERSON will be there to enjoy thewhole experience. And in a way, they kind of deserve that. They put an awful lot of time and money into the game, and I hope it doesn't do anything to the horse, probably won't. But that's what's going to happen there. So endlessly is in. So California has two horses. A stronghold trained by Phil Domato PERSON and endlessly will be in. Also, Encino. Impressive winter of the bluegrass, although that hasn't meant much for the Derby in the last 20 years. Encino is in, and that has a little bit of extra note for me because Ancino PRODUCT is a good dolphin horse, owned by Sheikh Mohammed PERSON.And I wrote the book from the Desert to the Derby about Sheikh Mohammed's billion-dollar quest to win the Kentucky Derby EVENT, and that goes back to the 90s, he has been unsuccessful, even in the past 23 years since the book was published in winning the Derby, and Cino PERSON has a shot. He kind of came out of nowhere. He was running on synthetic.They put him into the bluegrass, and he ran great. He beat the horse. I like the wine steward he kind of rebroke a little bit which is not a shock from a Brad Cox PERSON trained horse they tend to do that find more in the stretch when you're not sure they can but anyway excuse me Encino GPE is in so he adds some more speed to the race he's very wellbred horse very lightly raced. And we will see him in the starting gate a week from today, given Sheikh Mohammed one of his better chances, actually. He hasn't had a lot of great chances. Recently in the Kentucky Derby, and as of three weeks ago, he had no chance. And all of a sudden he does.And Ceno PERSON's in. He ran a good number on thoroughgraph too he is one of i'd say six two three four five seven horses on thoroughgraph that have run a number fast enough to make them a really serious contender in the kentucky derby just uh going from a thoroughgraph perspective uh horses only one or two, maybe three, are going to run their best career race next week. There's just too much going on, too many horses in the race.It's a mile and a quarter. And so of the 20, just again, one or two are going to run their all-time best. And they usually do it by one, two, maybe three points from the thorough graph scale. Again, mostly because it's a mile and a quarter and very stressful, all the other reasons. So you have to have run pretty fast already to be a contender here. The only horse not to do that was Rich Strike PERSON, and that was just a crazy, crazy race race and a crazy result and he ended up not doinganything after that so uh i'll just throw it out there the horses that have run fast enough so far to really make them serious contenders are fierceness mystic dan but he did it in the slop forever young but he did it in japan and dub just steel, Sierra Leone, just a touch, and then Cino PERSON, and maybe catalytic. That's it. Anybody else who wins this race is going to run at least a three-point new top on Thoreograph. The next three would be resilience, society man, and maybe catching freedom. Hard to see anybody else running fast enough based on what they've done previously to win this race.So it's an interesting one of the ways to look at the derby that I've kind of developed over the years. It's pretty simple. But that's the story. So again, we're going to know today. Fierceness had his final workout yesterday. It was what they were looking for.I watched it. I don't know how much you can learn from workouts of really good horses that are supposed to work well and do. But that's what he did. And the talent is there. The questions are also there. The two times things have not gone his way out of the gate. He has struggled and did not do much running at all. If that happens again, he'll be off the board. So he's a veryinteresting favorite in that he's one of those that absolutely could win the race. He probably has the best chance to win the race. But again, there's two races in his short career where he was off the board. And if you can get the nine to five, two to one, five to two favorite off the board, wow, you know, scores can be made. So he's a big, obviously the key decision in this race is how you feel about fierceness and how you play him in this race. He is clearly the fastest horse in the race by three points, three and a half pointsfaster than anybody else in here, his Ford Derby. And he also ran faster as a two-year-old than any of these horses have run three and a half points faster than anybody else in here, his Ford Derby. And he also ran faster as a two-year-old than any of these horses have run as a three-year-old. So pretty significant advantage that way for fierceness and trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Mike Rapoli PERSON. I've talked about him quite a bit, a huge ego, extremely arrogant, but also a huge New York GPE Mets fan like me, his colors or New York Mets colors. I want to like him.I don't. He's taken to calling himself the commissioner of racing and tweeting and getting invites with people and saying he's going to reform the game and change the game. So far, not a whole lot. But hot air has come from that angle angle he's done a little bit so he's he's the man again and remember these were the connections of forte last year so they were on the favorite last year right up until the morning of the derby and then we had the big controversy and that controversy still rages because he and his ego won't let it goand here he is back again with the strong favorite in the Kentucky Derby EVENT. So I don't know what that says about karma or what, but he spends a lot of money. He's got a good trainer, or at least a trainer who really, like Bob Bafford, tries to get horses ready for the Kentucky Derby EVENT. They really don't do much afterwards. So an interesting study by one of the Thorograph people about the Todd Pletcher PERSON horses after the derby. And man, a lot of them don't run again.Very few win again. But that's really not the point. Unfortunately, that's the way the sport has gone is that the big money that's spent and the big trainers focus on getting these horses, pushing these horses very hard to get them ready for the first Saturday in May. They're not even, I'd say the equivalent of about an 18-year-old at that point. But that's the prize.That's the one that all the rich owners and serious owners seem to want. And so here we are. So Rapoli is back, Pletcher PERSON is back, and fierceness is the one to deal with. It's hard to get that Breeders' Cup EVENT juvenile romp and the Florida Derby EVENT romp out of my mind.Just extraordinarily impressive efforts and way better than anybody else in here is done. So there you have it. So that's it. We're a week away from the Derby EVENT. Oh boy. What else? Well, racing today, like I said, Churchill Downs FAC is running. They have their meat open today this afternoon. Jay has his full card from there after doing Keenland ORG fortheir meet. Thoreograph, of course, is ready to roll. I'm feeling really good off their ridiculous domination of the final five races yesterday at Keelan GPE. Santa Anita has a nice card today. Two stakes races, and ironically, one of them is the cone of gold. That's ironic because once again, Kona Gold did not get into the cone of gold. And that's ironic because once again, Conan Gold did not get into the Hall of Fame ORG. He fell, I believe, four or five shorts, vote four or five votes short last year.And I'm sure it was pretty close again this year. But there seems to be a pretty strong bias against the horses from a while back with the voters now. Anyway, Conan Gold PERSON did not get in. It's a travesty. It's a joke.But those of us that saw him run, knew the connections a little bit or very well. He was a dominant sprinter. He was the epitome of a Hall of Fame ORG sprinter. And he should have a race named after him. He does. It should be a sprint.It is. And it's running today in race four. And here's some good karma. It wasn't going to be much of a race named after him. He does. It should be a sprint. It is. And it's running today in race four. And, and here's some good karma. It wasn't going to be much of a race because we just don't have that many top sprinters here in California anymore, which is really amazing considering the history. But the cow-bred superstar, the chosen Ron, worked so well last week. The trainer Eric Crueljack PERSON did something more trainers should probably do and said, you know what? Instead of waiting, he's doing so well, I'm putting them in.He's running. So the Chosen Ron is number four in a five-horse cone of gold in race four. Excuse me, seven horses. I don't know what I was saying there. There's seven horses in here. The Chosen Ron carries high weight, seven horses. I don't know what I was saying there. There's seven horses in here. The Chosen Rahn carries high weight, 124.Pretty much everybody else carries that as well. There's a couple horses carrying 120. The Chosen Vron has won three in a row, and what, 11 of his last 12? The only loss coming in the Breeders' Cup sprint. So, well done by Eric Crueljack PERSON. I mean, he has done such a fine job with this horse. I think it's just always an interesting reminder that there's alot of trainers that know what to do with a great horse. The great horse kind of carries you if you listen to the horse. And Eric Crueljack PERSON is a great example of that. He has really listened to this horse, watched him work, made decisions based on how the horse is doing, been fairly conservative with him, but just a brilliant, brilliant training job. And we're planning on running, I think about a month from now, and I loved his quote. He said, hey, look, you know, he's doing so good that there's a race now.Let's run him rather than putting three or four more works into him. He's a six-year-old. Here we go. Let's do this. So not a cow bread race, and he's got to deal with Forbidden Kingdom PERSON, extremely talented, five-year-old down on the rail for trainer Richard Mandela PERSON.He hasn't run much, but when he does, he's awfully fast. So this is going to be a fun race. Again, race four, the Kona Gold ORG. The Chosen Bronze shows up to honor Kona Gold, I think. And I hope that this race brings back some memories of the Kona Gold ORG Collar One rivalry or the Kona Gold big jag rivalry. There were a few horses that took their shots at Kona Gold ORG. Very few beat him more than once or twice and usually beat them.But boy, we saw some phenomenal races between some of those top sprinters back around the year 2000, 2001, 2 in that zone. And we've got two really good ones going out of today. So that's race 4 at San Anita PRODUCT. Again, a nice 10 race card today. Full field, especially in the Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6. Field size 8, 9, 9, 9, and 10 in the Pick 6.So that's really nice. The other feature, the co-feature, is Race 9. It's another one of my all-time favorite horses, Royal Heroin PERSON, who was just a ridiculously good turf miler. And she is honored with a mild turf race. So they got that right, too.Some of the races that they've, you know, name horses for just seem wrong. Both of these are right on. So well done. The Royal Heroin is a grade three for Phillies and Mayors four and up. This came up a very nice race. I believe there's nine in here.

He's on number seven on corked today in the Royal Heroin. And the other horse that looks like has a big big big shot is the three Bella Bell for Phil Domato PERSON.

And his fast track races, Jason, are just not the same as that race that I saw on the muddy track. So those are two horses that I would throw out based on what I'm seeing that are probably going to get better a little bit.

Well, listen, Jason, it's probably a no for me, but this has happened twice before. We saw the horse that ran second last year, and we saw a horse wind years ago that had this exact same type of thing that looked like they were a turf horse or a synthetic horse and have done well. But to me, boy, endlessly is such a big, good-looking horse, and it just looks like a turf horse to me. Certainly bred to be a turf horse. I wrote down that he had an ordinary dirt pedigree. Really looks like a turf horse is what this horse wants to be.He's run great on the turf, and I am disappointed that they're running him in here. Hopefully, I'm Bertowris Bowley PERSON's certainly one of my favorite jockeys. I'd like to see them do well. We know Michael McCarthy PERSON is very, very good, but I just don't think it's a favorable spot for endlessly either, Jason. Yeah. So,

And for those of us that remember, I believe it was 2006 and 7, Joel Rosario started his career at Golden Gate in Bay Meadows FAC. He was a no-cow guy.That's where he got rolling and came down here pretty quickly, as I recall. I think he was leading rider up there or second leading rider, and came down to Southern California LOC and pretty darn quickly established himself as one of the top riders in Southern California and has been in that position for the next, what is it, 16, 17 years. Here he is. So I won a lot of big, what is it, 16, 17 years. Here he is. So I won a lot of big, big races, but he started up there.He sure did, Jason.

We're not going to see another race worth that kind of money. I don't think in Northern California LOC, period, unless things changedramatically. And this is a race you're going to talk about, right? You dug into this one, the locals against the shippers, and let's talk about it.

Jason, I like number 11 in here, Sumter PERSON, and Sumter is a horse that has not won a race in his last 10 stars, and it's really been a horse that's been an absolute project for none other than Rich PERSON for Mandela PERSON. And I just love what he's done with this horse. You know, this horse was struggling a little bit.They put blinkers on him, and they tried to change everything and go to the lead and try to win races, and he just couldn't do it. And then again, this horse of freshening. And when this horse came back in January, I think they just started over again and said, let's see if we can get this horse to relax. And I really just like the progression that I'm seeing. And I know this horse is five now, and it's hard to get horses better at this age. But boy, Richard Mandela PERSON has sure done it, because I really like the last three races from this one, Jason. On the thoroughgraph sheets, this horse has run threeconsecutive fours in a row, which it really fits solidly in here. I think this horse can actually go a point forward today. Pereira goes all the way up north to ride this one. But Jason, last time, that third, this horse was very wide, and I think the horse that beat him, Johannes PERSON, is really going to be one of the better horses down here. They ran that mile in 132 flat, and that was after two very good sprints against really the best horses. Mucha DeLoro PRODUCT has sort of become the best hill horse down here, and this horse finished a length and a half back and a length back.Again, progressing, getting a little bit better each time. And I thought the race last time was really, really good. And again, it's been a while. But I think Sumter is going to get the right trip in here today, Jason. If you look at the way this race is pace-wise, I think both Air Force Red are actually all three horses. Air Force Red Astronomer and Clovis Conviction PRODUCT are very fast, need-the-lead types. And when I look at these races, Jason, I always use these brissy P numbers,and I come up with a number for each horse. And where I have Sumter is in a very, very good fourth or fifth position early, but he's a lot faster than a lot of the closers in here. So despite having the 11-hole, what I think can actually happen, if those three go as fast as I think they'll go, then I think that this 11 postwill quickly become a good post because I think he can just go out and with everybody going in front of him and with him being a lot faster than most of the other horses, he'll be able to move over into a real good position, fourth or fifth, maybe just one spot off the rail,which is typically where Tiago PERSON likes to be. He's not a great inside rail rider anyway. So I think the rider fits here. I think the race shape fits here. And I think Sumter PERSON is going to run his best race ever. I like number 11 Sumter to win the San Francisco mile today.He's going to use three horses with him, the defending champ down the cough. Very, very disappointing horse last. I really liked this horse in his last start in the Thunder Road FAC. But he came off the layoff and ran a very good third to eastern Hong KongHarry, two of the better horses here on the West Coast. Toss the next race, because that was too short. Forbidden Kingdom got the lead. Nobody was doing any passing there, but I really don't have an excuse for that last out, except for maybe that wasa good track that he didn't handle. I should get a firmer turf course today. I think Bainekomp PERSON is a contender. Astronomers always outruns his odds. Very solid horse in here, but he's going to have to deal with other days. I'm going to use this one anyway.He gets the services of Evan Ramon PERSON, who's doing very well up there. And then lastly, I'm going to use a local horse in here that's a big price in the morning line. Freeport Joe gets back on the turf today. This horse has run some big turf races in the past, and he seems to really be going good right now. And again, a big price in here to spice things up at 30 to 1 for Freeport Joe. But it's the 11 Sumter for me. I'm going to play him to win, and I'll use the four Bannikoff, the seven astronomer, and the nine, Freeport Joe, and exact the boxes, and then I'll play the11, first and second, and two simple, $6.00 tractus, 11 over the 479, over the 479, come back and play 479, over 11, over 479. In fact, a little bit of aslow break, but what a good finish and a fantastic gallop out for criticism. And this horse ran a number on Thoroughrap that's very competitive with these, which I like, but more importantly, to me, Jason, the gallop out was really good. The pedigree says this horse ran a number on Thorograph ORG that's very competitive with these, which I like, but more importantly to me, Jason, the gallop out was really good. The pedigree says this horse should be able to run long on the turf. They just haven't gotten to that point, and they will now. You got a lot of horses in here that have had a lot of chances and have not gotten the job done,and this is, again, with Kyle Frey PERSON, we're going to get a nice price in here. The seven criticism at 15 to 1, I'm going to make a wind back here. I'm going to use three horses in there with this one. The three horse, I'm a joker, get the big rider change in here. Jason, I really like the way Hector Berrios PERSON has been riding. This turf horse continues to win, and an alarming rate, 21%. With all these big boys having big meat, great to see Hector PERSON on any horse that you have,especially on the grass. This one will save some ground and come running. Irish Rose looks like the speed of the speed, and this one will get clear here today, Jason. Just don't know about the mile and an eighth for this one. This one will be clear, but I think this one will tire. And then I'm also going to use Runyon Canyon PERSON, who's obviously improving.Got to overcome that outside post, but Tatori PERSON riding fantastically well. He's winning incredible amounts of races, especially with Pratt PERSON gone, and he's going to be tough to beat all day to day. But I like the seven criticism. Play this one to win, and we'll play three exactoboxes here with 3, 5, and 10, and play that try first and second with the 3, 5, and 10.It's the 7 criticism to upset in race 11 today out at San Anita PRODUCT.

First time you'd ever seen anything close to a mile and eighth, understandably tired late.But Serial only just ran by him at the end, but I'm never crazy about that style, and as I mentioned last week, Sierra Leone's GPE style might have looked better than it actually was. The timing wasn't that great for the last traction, so it was more like other horses were getting tired. I think Just a Touch PERSON can improve.And the one that's kind of a bomb, and I don't know much about his chances for winning, but a chance to hit the board is the other son of Justify. That's just Steele from the Wayne Lucas Barn ORG.

Like you said, so Just Steele PERSON, he seems to be flying under the radar.I think Lucas is going to get a lot of press this week. And so maybe that will change a little bit. But Just Steele PERSON ran really well in that Arkansas Derby. And he's run three really big races in his career. And unlike most in here, he's run a lot because it's D. Wayne PERSON. So there's that too. If you like that factor, it's old school with just steel. All right. Let's jump to today's racing. You want to start at San Anita PRODUCT.What are you going to do? We can do race seven from both, right?

Yeah, I'll raise nine from both, and we'll start with Churchill FAC. We're going to look at the Roxelana FAC here. We'll see if we can beat Brad Cox today. Brad PERSON's bringing back dazzling blue off a long layoff. Has had three good shots in graded races and hasn't won any of them, but it's hit the board in all three of them.And so certainly the class of this field, and this is an easier field, it's not a graded stakes, but this one's coming off a layoff has not run since October. And you've got to think, even though this horse could win this, Philly GPE on sheer talent alone, this can't be the goal. You've got to think that the screws can't be more than, say, you know, half-cranked on thisone, and I think dazzling Blue WORK_OF_ART will need to do what she can do on her own rather than Brad Cox's PERSON push her one. If you look at the works, they're very pedestrian. So it's worth taking a shot trying to beat her, and there's a fewhorses in here that have a shot as competitive heat. The one I like, though, is number nine, socially selective. Bill Mott and his go-to-writer, Junior Alvarado PERSON. This one has been on the board

And I think Bella Bell at five to one, you're probably not going to get that. But you might get seven at two, and it's still a value there.

The horse they like in the seventh race at Churchill is the 10. A horse named Robin Sage PERSON. Robin Sage is going to be the best bet here out of Churchill for Thoroughraph today.This is a classic Alan Benowitz's thoroughgraph play, Jason. Now, this horse, if you look at this horse's sheet on the turf, this horse, if you go back four races, this horse ran 11, then ran a 10, then ran a 13 going a mile and a half, which I think was probably too far for that one, and then ran a 9 in the last race as a 3-year-old.Now, this is a 4-year-old Philly GPE. We're going to use the eight haystack, another, both of those horses, solid fits on sheets. And even though the 12 horse is not drawn in yet is on the also-eligible, we think that horse is very dangerous. So we're going to use the 12 in here, Spartan Queen PRODUCT.So we're going to do a three horse exact box in here, 410, excuse me, 4, 8, 10.

Yeah, this is a really, really nice thorough graph play. And mile on the 16th, no problem for this one. It's gone much farther. And like you said, comes off the bench here, six-month layoff, first-time four-year-old with numbers that fit at 20 to 1 with a jockey that has hit some big prices. Mr. Machado PERSON has done very, very well.The 10, Robin Sage in Race 7 at Churchill Downs FAC. Okay, let's jump to San Anita and race seven there.

Jason, I tell you what, this play really caught my eye because, you know, the first 20 years of my horse racing career, I did not use sheets, and I would look for this type of horse. And when I started talking to a guy and learning how to play the sheets, I always found that sometimes the speed is not the sheet horse because they don't necessarily run the fastest numbers. And that's not the case here.And when I found that that was the case, I always felt like those horses did exceptionally well. And that's the case with the seventh race. Number two on the whim, on the whim as two turf races. They're both very, very good numbers on the thorough graph sheets. This horse ran a seven and an eight in the two grass races, and the seven was the first race ever going short.This horse has a brief freshening here for an extremely high percentage trainer, Dean Peterson PERSON. Again, I said this a couple weeks ago when you look at the long run statistics, if you look at Dean Peterson at 2 for 18 at 11%, you're not all that fired up. But when you go to Thorough FAC, and you look at the percentage of this guy, every single percentage, dirt to turf, winner of the last race, and overall, 793 starts 19% winners.This guy is a fantastic trainer. He's been one of the best percentage trainers the last few years, just off to a little bit of a slow start this meet. He rides Abdul Al-Sigador PERSON in this race. Jason, the reason for that is because Tiago Pereira PERSON is going up north and probably with nothing left in here.Al-Sigador PERSON has ridden for this guy before, and this is speed horse.

So there's a lot of things to like from a thoroughbrap perspective, especially the numbers on the trainer and the numbers on this horse. Not a lot of pace in this race. I think this horse will be right there throughout. And number two on the whim is going to run well today. The seventh race down the hill for thoroughbrap. It's a windbed here on number two, and we're going to play two simple exact the boxes in here. Jason, and they are with the eight forgiving spirit who's very solid on the sheets. And the nine Cali Bay PERSON, who's kind of an in-and-outer for that guy,Bill DeMotto with Hector Barrios PERSON riding. The two on the whim to wrap things up for Thurrograph FAC today in race seven out of San Anita PRODUCT. I like it.
